justmi1: I laugh when I see posts like this. It's not about Bsc or Hnd. Like someone stated some Hnd graduates are better than thier Bsc counterparts and vice versa; it all depends on the individual's zeal to develop and learn more.
I'm an Hnd graduate and I was manager at a private organization for 6 years where I constantly interviewed Msc graduates that appeared not so sound.
I had about 20 people who worked under my supervision. In the end, I resigned to start my company and now have almost 10 staff, because I learnt on the job.
So it's up to you NOT to limit yourself based on your qualification. Moreover where are jobs even for Bsc graduates? actually is about building yourself, my lecturer who graduates 2016 was gisting us his plight before he could get internship placement despite his Distinction degree. |

Digital skill is the way, but the problem most folks encounter is dedicating time to learn.
Imagine dedicating a year or more to learning, without thinking of earning.
It's hard, the reason why they'd prefer to keep looking for a job! I wonder oooo. After I graduated from UNILAG I don't even stress myself to look for job that is not there. Immediately, I went to learn a skill and I am happy for myself. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Adaorababy: I can relate to this dehumanizing treatment. The dichotomy does not end in when applying for jobs. Even when you're working in that company. You can't go beyond a step on the ladder as an HND graduate. Many times, HND holders are used as contract staff while their BSC counterparts are permanent staff. Very dehumanizing. However, in all fairness, it's easier to get a job as an HND holder than as a BSc holder because they are subjected to meagre pay and most Nigerian firms follow the use and dump approach.
I started to notice this disparity during NYSC whilst commencing the orientation registration process. I heared something like this. Graduates from Federal universities, form first line., Foreign universities, second line Private university, third line, state university, fourth line, Federal and State polytechnics, be on the 5th line and colleges the 6th line. That discrimination was all shades of wrong on every side. As I was waiting for my category to be called, I remember how my self esteem dropped drastically. Seeing most of the polished in first, second, third and fourth lines and I had to just be on the fifth line. Why The annoying thing is that many people in the 5th and 6th lines looked one kind. Majority of them had natural low self esteem, could not communicate properly, and looked very dull. I felt bad that a bright HND holder like me that graduated with distinction in Banking & Finance could be ridiculed this way. Because of this, throughout my three weeks in camp, I refused to participate in camp activities. Although, it was not difficult to get a job in the financial sector, in fact, I was employed within 4months of completing the NYSC one year program but I could not also watch people that were still in secondary school while I already joined the bank, graduate from the University and become my boss. They had promotions, better career path, were giving cars while my salary remained same for 9years as a contract staff. This was what led to me quitting working in the bank despite my long years of working in the bank and having a PGD and masters and performing excellently well in my designated functions. I was angry that even though, the dichotomy between HND and BSC prevented me from being converted, why wasn't I converted despite furthering and having a masters degree?

We might not take it or believe it but the simple truth is that there is no way you can equate HND with Bsc
If It is not Bsc, it is not Bsc.
HND plus PGD is not Bsc.
Securing or getting a job at times depends on luck. With HND it is possible to get a high paying job but the fact still remains that someone with Bsc has an edge over HND holders.
All with HND certificate should go for conversion as early as possible. 7 Likes |

Even having a P.hD does not mean anything in the labour market. It will get to a point that its only job seekers with first class degree that will even be considered.

I have HND. Several years ago, I lost many job opportunities because of the useless employers of labour. Now, I have a PDG, a Masters and currently on another Masters.
But, for 8 years, while still having only HND, I worked in 5 different Banks, only the first one as a Contract staff. E no go better for the designers of Nigeria's educational system. So, as the OP rightly said, HND is not the problem. |

Phd, Msc,MBA, Bsc or HND. The fact is there is no job in Nigeria. Thousands are graduating every year from Universities, both federal, state and private, Polytechnics, both federal, state and private. Government is not creating any job. Npower is just like drop of water inthe ocean. People should learn skill and become independent. Education is a scam in Nigeria. Government has killed education. They employ graduates and pay them stipends, that is why private companies are learning from them how to exploit graduates. It was government that rendered education valueless. God bless Nigerian graduates and punish the leaders. 2 Likes |

I’m so sorry about this your experience. I have seen first hand this discrimination between BSc and HND graduates. When I was doing my 6months internship as an undergraduate, There was another guy doing his 1 year internship before going for his HND program. He had finished his OND but not yet started his HND. I was in 400 level. I was paid 15k while the OND guy was paid 12k. The guy was so angry. He said it is not like I have finished my BSc or have a degree yet that why should they discriminate. He called the HR and complained to her. The woman told him that it was their policy. After that time, Oga decided that he won’t work for anybody because he can’t subject himself to such discrimination. But I want you to know that this discriminions is almost everywhere. Especially in countries that carry school certificates on their head. 2 Likes 1 Share |
