Well we then keep on having poor power.

You won't like it if you were running a business and people paid you below your set price

This government came to power, tariffs
were about 12 Naira.

The Gencos & Discos said they can't
operate effectively if the charges are
not increased.

Govt doubled the rates to 20 to 30,
after a few months they said they still
wanted increase.

Small by small, charges reached 50 to 60,
yet they want another increase.

9 months from now, they will still want
increase.

Last, last, the incompetent Fulani govt of
Buhari is responsible, because they
increase taxes, charges & energy costs
without giving a fvck about multiplier
effects on the economy.

All the increases, yet they keep borrowing
from from every direction.

Wasn't the major aim is to privatize the power sector like telecommunication sector without government intervention? Different power vendors for the consumers to choose from?and I don't even understand why we still have unused/undistributed power going to waste if they are looking to make profit why they don't they distribute it.

Telecoms had two advantages power companies didn't

1. They were allowed to set their own price. Power companies cannot do that. Their price is I essence determined by Nerc. And every time the price is always kept at a level below the cost of production

2. Banks and other financial agencies as a result are willing to lend to telecommunications companies ( even jokes like 9mobile).

Because discos due to goverment con trolling prices run at a loss, no bank would lend to them

Thus GSM companies have cash to invest. Discos have losses of trillions of naira and no one wants to lend them money at all.

I hope you would like it if in your business people deliberately underpaid you or paid you at rates that make you lose money. Yes you should. We are all poor after all

Well the cost of power is always higher than the actual price we pay for power in Nigeria.

That is why we would have bad power supply. Whoever is in charge. We had bad power supply in previous administration presumably without the taxes and so on that Buhari charges now.

They payment of cost reflective tariffs can only be justified if all are metered........the concentrations of DISCOs should be on metering all customers not cost increment.

Estimated bill is obvious corruption

Which is a good idea.

We are.paying for power

Not at the price the discos need it to be to make a profit.

That's why.

Meanwhile in the GSM sector we have bettwr telephony than we did in the 1980s because we paid rates that enabled the GSM companies to make a profit to build up all the infrastructure that we use to chat and browse.

Are sure are you about this? Are you a staff of Ekedp ot Ikedc?

The GSM part. It was competition. It has nothing to do with how much we pay. MTN might have been milking us if Glo hadn't slashed its price . Are you in the system? Because it seems you will rather blame the consumer for a private firm's incompetency.

If offer great service, the consumer has no other option than to pay.

What can you say about water cooperation?

Have you compared this economy with what we have in countries where they pay a lot more for electricity? Before you say Nigerians underpay the power sector, have you looked at the minimum wage? Our economy is so bad that any increase in cost of basic services will not only further reduce our purchasing power, it will kill it!

Well since we are poor we can only afford poor power supply by your analogy

Good to know that

Or we could prevail on Buhari to reverse the privatisation of power in return for paying the discos and GENCOS billions in compensation for in essence breaking their contract

so we should be charged 1000NGN per hr so that the disco dancers would have enough money in their pockets right?
Then production rate goes up, prices of goods and services rendered inflates. How do you expect the people to survive.

1. That's a straw man

2. True, and like every businessman, if the business isn't favouring them, then they should pull out of it and let the government return back to NEPA.

And even then we won't have stable power unless we pay the power companies a rate of that enables them to make an adequate profit to make investment in improving things

All the increases we have had so far have not been enough to enable the power companies make a profit since the increases are sanctioned by government, not the companies themselves

And what goverment does is to keep the price of electricity below the cost of production per kwh. This ensures that discos and GENCOS don't make enough of a profit. The government is supposed to pay them a subsidy which in theory is supposed to make up for the losses, but in practice does not because of rising costs of producing electricity.

Allowing discos to set their prices would allow them make a profit to pay for the needed improvements and even encourage more investment
You are talking arrant nonsense. So the discos are not making profit yet they remain in the business all these years and refused to get out? Which private entity will be running at a loss for that number of years and still remain solvent? They are making enough profit,
All this rubbish is happening because the electricity distribution business in nigeria is essentially a monopoly where a few companies are allocated territories which they monopolize and no other company is allowed to compete with them there. Let government completely deregulate that industry allow any of the companies that is interested to come in and invest in any territory they want to then you will know that the discos are making more than enough profit. The electricity tariff will even crash down and they will still be in the business.

Yeah but the reason why there were so many companies to compete was because they were allowed to set their price .And thus make a profit. This attracted more companies more money more competition and more investment and price falling

Sim cards used to be very very expensive. Infact making calls also used to be very expensive. People back then were virtually calling on goverment to set prices .thankfully they did not

Discos canmot set their prices, thus they run at a loss, and thus they also canmot attract investment. Also they are virtual monopolies in their region of service due to the way the laws were set up.

By the way I don't work for the discos. I began reading up around the issues in the sector from 2013. It's an ongoing endeavour

Lol, I'm not going to label as you as DISCO staff but I will tell you to stop deceiving yourself.
One, FG is still subsidising the energy that DISCOs are buying from the GENCOs. I'm not saying subsidising for the customers but subsidising for the DISCOs.
Two, have you ever been given estimated bill? I was given monthly estimated bill of 20k for 7 months before prepaid was given to me. Now, the total amount of debt on our prepaid meter is 200k out of which we have paid 50k within 3 months apart from the cost of energy we're buying. But I'm happy to tell you that we didn't consume that 20k energy per month. That's exactly what over 80% of their customers are facing today.
Thirdly, do we even have a stable power supply? No. But customers on estimated billing which are the majority are being billed for 24/7 power supply! Is that fair?
Fourthly, are these DISCOs even investing according to their agreement with FG? No! People are still buying transformers, main poles and cables in new communities. DISCOs staff just come to collect tariffs once such communities are connected to the power grid. Is that fair?
Fifthly, are DISCOs even paying the GENCOs appropriately and as when due? Go and read up how much they're owing GENCOs. On top the fact that these DISCOs owners are smiling to the banks everyday.

Or we could prevail on Buhari to reverse the privatisation of power in return for paying the discos and GENCOS billions in compensation for in essence breaking their contract

Not possible because the billions you're talking about is in dollars, not naira. And it is not a few billions of dollars. You need to read the ridiculous clauses put in place in case FG wants to get it back.
