Subsidized training you say? Hmm...That’s not the case though. I’m in a state university and I pay 140k per level. Other below me pay 200k and above per level. And although, it is “subsidized” like you say, more than half of my class has not paid the required fees. Some have to depend on scholarships, others also make use of state loans (and are in debt like their counterparts overseas) If you stayed overseas, you’ll not see their fees are overboard. For example, we pay 100-170k or more as house rent in Nigeria but other overseas pay $1500 and above for the same house rent but that does not mean you’re receiving subsidized rent.

140K is more than subsidized , barely 350$ using 400/$. Wonder why this same Saudi Arabia isn't recruiting from these other European countries ?

The reality you need to face is we have bad leaders.

Compare the salary of politicians like reps, senators, governors etc with other workers not to talk of kick backs.

Besides loans they drown themselves and building rail roads that are vandalized at night.

Better choose your chinese name and start learning Chinese because China will soon come for claims and your house may be taken.

You really do not understand the enormity of our present predicament.

Even if all politicians start earning zero salary, we still do not have the revenue !!!!!

Simple mathematics:

If 75,000 doctors in Nigeria should start earning average salary of say N1million per month, that's total of N75billion per month and N900b per year!! Just for Doctors salary alone!!!!

What is the budget for health, private, federal and all states combined??

What if other professionals now demand equal treatment, what will happen to NIGERIA

Doctors can be the new source of foreign exchange if the govt can look deeper.
Every year in the universities more than enough qualified students for medicine are forced into other departments because the quota for medicine is 150 at max.
You'll see people with hyper impressive grades forced into other departments..
It won't take much for the FG to invest in the medical sector and improve the quota of every universities to 500.
That way we'll have much more exports and also more private hospitals at lesser rates.

Exactly my thoughts, every other professionals get 10 times their pay when they leave Nigeria. So doctors should stop making it look like they are bein victimised.

This subsidized medical education sounds quite funny and that's the narrative painted by the government for the public.
Let me ask a question, even if you didn't study Medicine, the quality of education you got in a Nigerian University as well as the quality of life you experienced, does it worth paying millions?. Same scenario applies to med school in Nigeria , prior to graduating, they introduced a clinical fee of 100k per session asides school fees and accommodation making the total fee almost 200k , yet you have about 8 students in a single room at times and they claim it's subsidized.
Others will say Medical studies in UK, US, Canada is expensive forgetting that the quality of education and quality of life is worth it, secondly , there is facility for student loans which is repayable after graduating .
You want us paying millions for the current standard of Education in Nigeria, it's not possible and the government knows this.
What is more embarrassing is that neighbouring West African countries pay their health workers much better than Nigeria even with a poorer economy.

I certainly believe you are a doctor, would you say that you would have spent less if you had been schooled in the UK or US? On standard of education abroad and in the country how come foreign countries recruit Nigerian medical doctors even though they are products of poor education and training. I know for sure that foreign countries would never bother to look at Nigeria if they don't have quality services from them

that's also a recipe for brain drain and many more fields will lose experts who chose to foray into medicine. Medicine as a faculty has the highest number of people whose natural inclination was anything but hospital live but they chose to be mediocres in the medical line

As a medic, the fact is , we doctors don't get paid well (One of my brothers who lives abroad when he heard my salary, his first question was...are they ripping you off?. He was shocked to hear that I was even one of the better paid doctors at my level)

But here is why Saudi can afford to pay such high salareis

1.Saudis produce oil...10 million barrels of crude compared to our 1.4 million barrels of crude.daily

2.Saudis have 35 million people, compared to our 200million people.

3. Saudis have a higher income compared to us as a result...

4.Saudi's foreign reserve in 2014 was at 750 billion dollars. Nigeria at that time was managing 39 billion dollars in our reserve.

First of all go and ask the president and other political leaders why they are always flying abroad for medical attention?

Right now the medical sector in Nigeria even lack the capacity to make a proper and accurate diagnosis.

If one cannot correctly examine and identify what the health challenge is how can the treatment be prescribed.

You still think it is only salary they are complaining about?

Besides who told you they are demanding #1 mil monthly.

Simply make the work environment equipped and provide adequate leave, reduce work load.

You need to read in between the lines.

While the doctors are talking about their new revenue, they should also talk about their expenditure in Saudi. Besides, they shouldn't forget to compare the liberty they enjoy in Nigeria to that of Saudi. Life is not measured in money alone.

They should also tell us about the ethics of the profession. Can they open private hospital while working in the govt hospital in Saudi? Can they refer patients from the govt hospital to their own private clinics in Saudi?. Do they address patients anyhow in Saudi? Do they sleep with patients and their relatives recklessly in their waiting room in Saudi ? Do they offer mediocre services in Saudi?

While people will rush to blame the govt, remember to look into the way doctors behave in Nigeria as well, acting far superior to other professionals in Nigeria. Till we can look into all these, we won't have a balanced conversation.

Actually it is very very true.

Let me ask a question, even if you didn't study Medicine, the quality of education you got in a Nigerian University as well as the quality of life you experienced, does it worth paying millions?. Others will say Medical studies in UK, US, Canada is expensive forgetting that the quality of education and quality of life is worth it, secondly , there is facility for student loans which is repayable after graduating

It is because the UK, US and Canada pay high school fees that they get high quality. That 200k in Nigeria is less than 500 dollars.

If we paid millions , our universities would be able to pay for the same quality they get in US, UK and Canada.

(That's why private universities in the next generation may surpass public universities here.)
.
You want us paying millions for the current standard of Education in Nigeria, it's not possible and the government knows this

I think he wants you to pay millions so that they can make things up to standard.

Nigeria in 2019 had a budget of 26 billion dollars, from which education (primary, secondary and university) got 3 billion. South Africa spent 23 billion dollars on education alone in the same year..., and even they think it is not enough!.

We have bad quality because we are not making the money to pay for good quality. As one former VC of a Nigerian university said...if you want Cambridge level degrees, you have to pay cambridge level fees!

What is more embarrassing is that neighbouring West African countries pay their health workers much better than Nigeria even with a poorer economy.

When some of them charge higher taxes than we do. (Ghana has a tax to gdp ratio of 23% compared to Nigeria's 6.1%)

private universities and state universities (because you can't claim state universities pay peanut to study) who pay huge amounts of money have the right to abandon Nigeria ,right?

In Niggeria the only thing that is given value is money.
Even human lives is not as important as money.
This is why the banking sector is the most functional.
We have doctors who are more interested in getting payed than actually doing the work. Them we have the general populace who don't even understand how serious it is to not have a functional health system.

Everyone is caught up by the greedy bugg. Banking sector don't pay better than health. You just not figured your sectors out intelligently. Every institution is viable. As long as there are sick people and dieing people and birth.. doctors will always be relevant and they are far relevant than bankers. But you should look inwards within your structures. I feel those stealing from you are mainly amongst your Institutes. Not the government politicians per say.

If you read for many decades and you can't figure how to outwit and get what you want from semi agbero politicians, but choose to turn and run then the stupidity is on you and no one else. You need doctors with warrior hearts to fight for you even in your profession. Weaklings will always act out their first instinct at the sight of trouble. Which is turn and run to safety.

They are taking advantage of the fact that they do the critical job of saving human lives. But every field of study is important to the development of a country, even Guardian and Counseling. Doctors are only using the advantage they have in the sense of the critical nature of their jobs: a day into doctor strike can result into a significant loss of lives. But doctos need to understand that only them don't build a society, even the facilities and equipment they are using are produced by some people.

Personally, as a doctor working in Nigeria, I want high pay. But even me knows that it is unrealistic for Nigeria to pay me at Saudi level. Not without getting into more debt! grin

That's why we have to stop relying on oil, and relying on selling raw materials and start using our raw materials to produce exportable goods. That's how the rich countries do it. But Nigerians want it now, not later.

You are still a looser. You abandon your country when they needed you. Worst than that you keep making attributions. The country is bad we know it has been so since time of fela and even so before him. Those who choose to stay defined themselves clearly..it's mind of matter. Material success over the spirit of our calling ( in your case saving struggling humans).

There are doctors in war torn region doing their bid in this regards. So do what you must but live with your decisions. The rest of us up here will keep doing our best. You down there do yours. But overall yours is a weak mind

The medical profession is a spiritual one no different from men of God. If you moneytise it beyond a point. You loose the original meaning and all that is left is perhaps the bureaucrat one.

Well, as a doctor, everyone has a right to go where the money is. It has been happening in many parts of the world for generations.

(Even in football self. Colombia is now famous for having been a war torn, drug ridden country, but one time in the 1950's, it had a rich enough football league that attracted players from Europe self.).

If you don't want doctors to go abroad to make money...then you also have to tell everyone else too that they don't have a right to go where the money is. That won't win you any fans.

Ultimately, people want to make money. Lots of money. Even you too.

By the way, before you start...I work in Nigeria , and have no plans to migrate in the nearest future.
