Modrov: A simple google search just showed that it costs 5.43 Rupees to produce a Kwh in India, the equivalence of #30 naira. Are the Indians runninig at a loss too? I ask again, how did you guys arrive at #73 to produce a kwh of power in Nigeria, a gas producing country? |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by Nobody: 9:48am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Barryseal: India is not Nigeria...plus India generates from a wider vairety, including nuclear. |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by Barryseal: 9:58am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Modrov:Of course India cannot match Nigerias corruption, so India is not Nigeria. I have the data from fellow oil producing countries like Oman and Qatar reflecting even lower cost of energy production to nuclear powered India. This lies and conspiracy theories about discos running at a loss MUST STOP. What kind of concobility is this!? 2 Likes |

Barryseal: Well, it isn't just the DISCOS saying that...it is also independent audit companies like PWC saying that. The below is a page from their report on the matter. Solving the liquidity crunch in the Nigerian power sector.

Modrov:And since you'd rather believe figures from the pages of documents over evidences whose effects you have personally felt (not just hearsay), figures presented by the beneficiaries of the corrupt practices that we are all suffering from, I completely agree that it's of no use continuing this discussion. PS: Majority of us are unmetered, therefore majority of us are overbilled(as shown by your personal experience). Why can't the surplus revenue generated from the "overbilled" customers cover the supposed deficit incurred from the "low" tariffs? Does that not mean that someone somewhere is not being truthful? Think about that. PPS: I'll definitely read the item you recommended. Who knows, I might find some useful information. Have a nice day man. Cheers! 2 Likes |

Modrov:You want me to believe a bent report which claimed the discos have been running at a loss for almost a decade? How can you even make sense of that? Is this not the same kind of report that claimed NNPC was running at a loss for 30 years but suddenly declared 287B AFTER TAX this month. Lets stop all these lies. 1 Like |

Barryseal: And now we are in the realm of 'proven facts don't matter' Good morning. The fact is, I agree, in my heart, that power should be free for all Nigerians. But that's against all sensible reasoning. I don try. |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by emorse(m): 10:29am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Barryseal:I tire o. Is there any business in the world that can withstand 5 straight years of loss? Why not pack up and leave then? Power should not be free. But we should only pay for what we consume. Make dem stop to give us bobo. |

FILEBE: All of you guys are saying I am lying, and saying your 'hearsay' is better than organsied facts , so why should I believe you? You want power for free. That's okay. I accept that. But in real life, things have to be paid for. |

emorse: Generally, DISCOS make enough to pay staff salaries...it is when it is time to pay for things like gas, repairs, upgrades, etc...that they don't have enough money. Government also pays them a subsidy, which even then is not enough. At the end of the day, power needs a lot of money. |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by Barryseal: 10:45am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Modrov:What fact have you proven? #73 naira to produce electricity in Nigeria while in other gas producing nations it costs less than #20 equivalent? I dont think anybody have suggested electricity should be free ,what we are against is the lies and day light robbery going on in the power sector. If I was benefiting from the fraud, I would be on the other side defending with ground breaking facts and figures. Thats how Nigeria works, have a nice day. |

Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by ogaontop(m): 10:58am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Modrov:How do you prove these figures, many figures from these government establishments are not correct, A government agency in Abuja is currently having issues of 28.4 billion naira difference between 2015 to 2020 when PWC audited them! |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by Nobody: 11:00am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Barryseal: They can.... Companies run on fixed costs...from whence salaries cometh, and operating costs. They may be having enough for the fixed costs bit...but the operating costs...is where the lack of a profit is very painful (Them DISCOS always complain about not having enough to pay GENCOS) The subsidies...part of which comes from government, and part of which comes from private loans...may help a bit. |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by Nobody: 11:03am On Aug 29, 2021 |
ogaontop: DISCOS aren't government establishments, not since 2013. (Transmission is all that is in government's hands, and even they depend on their portion of the revenue that the DISCOS can raise) Plus, this is a PwC report, not my report...so ask them how. Plus PwC is composed of experts who do this for a living...so they should know what they are doing. |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by Barryseal: 11:07am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Modrov:Yes, they can run on fixed cost for a few months not 10years. |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by Nobody: 11:12am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Barryseal: Which is where the subsides government (alongside some international lending agencies) pays come in. It is good, but not good enough to make them earn a decent profit. Plus they don't pay taxes...simply because they can't afford it. (Kaduna DISCO has not paid taxes since its' establisment, as an example. That is also mentioned in the report that I have posted here). Government knows, and turns a blind eye. If government forced them to pay up...they would go out of business. |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by Barryseal: 11:14am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Modrov: Subsidy again? mehn, am out. |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by Nobody: 11:20am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Barryseal: Yeah, when power is not charged at market prices but government prices, government has to pay a subsidy to offsett the losses being made. |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by emorse(m): 11:28am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Modrov:DISCOS don't pay for gas. GENCOS do. DISCOS only bear four costs. 1. Cost of power recieved from the TCN. 2.Workers' remuneration. 3. Maintenance costs. 4. Upgrades. 1. The federal government subsidises the power they get from the TCN. This means they are only to pay a fraction of the actual cost of the power the receive. Yet they default! 2. We don't hear much about workers remuneration so it is safe to assume that they're doing fine. 3. Maintenance? Haba! Most communities bear the cost. We recently paid handsomely to have our transformer fixed after which they dropped our quota to 10 days a month and increased our estimated monthly consumption. 4. Upgrades? We don't see those. Shey na people wey no gree repair transformer go upgrade am? The last national mass metering program was sponsored by the federal government and these guys hijacked the process and messed it up. Imagine a community of only a few thousand houses that got an allocation of 44,000 meters. Less than half of us have been metered and they say meters don finish. How come? I hear another metering phase is due to commence soon but there's a high chance that these guys will hijack it again. DISCOS understate their revenues to avoid paying the TCN and GENCOS what's due to them. I mean, it is simple. If the TCN gives them only 1kwH which is already subsidised by the government for onward distribution, it's difficult to see where the loss will come from since they're only meant to pay the balance for the 1kwH that they received! |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by Barryseal: 11:30am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Modrov: The discos are runing at a loss while the government pays subsidy to generate energy at twice the cost of other gas producing nation's Kwh. Thats right! bye bye |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by Nobody: 11:31am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Barryseal: We also rely on water/hydro as well...plus there are losses of up to 2000mw on the transmission of power (and the transmission has to be replaced which it can't because...you know...low tarrifs). |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by emorse(m): 11:33am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Modrov:No one has said you're lying. We're only saying that you're believing liars. And please no one wants power for free. Just do your job and give us what we pay for. |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by Nobody: 11:35am On Aug 29, 2021 |
emorse: No you are. You are accusing me of posting lies...when I posted a report from experts on the power sector. Okay, so why won't I be upset. That's one thing I don't like about Nairaland. Post facts...people accuse you of lying. Anyway i have tried. No profit...no money for improvements. Good am. |
Re: Confusion As Disco Announces Tariff Increase, NERC Silent by emorse(m): 11:55am On Aug 29, 2021 |
Modrov:This is what I said about you earlier. emorse:Don't take this personal bro. It's not about you. It's the systemic corruption in the power sector, which is as in almost every sector in Nigeria, that is to blame. You're seeing things only from the textbook and academic point of view and not based on the realities(which you also experience) on ground. |
