But they spend and accept the old USD note in the US without any complain. I think the issue of new note only happens in Nigeria.

Yes, they are valid but banks don't issue them anymore, I believe. And that's the ideal situation and the only practical way to get rid of old notes. Financial institutions gradually absorb them and dish out the new ones. While this is happening, citizens should be able to use the old notes anywhere, anytime. At no point should citizens be told their money is no longer valid. That's an insult to the currency.

Majority of these our so called bankers hardly follow the new CBN news to keep them abreast of the latest news...

I could remember when I worked in the bank, God continue to bless my boss then, he would always say Wunmi and others, make sure you follow CBN and know what's going on in the banking system, so that you won't be lost when a customer ask you a question...

The other things bank lack these days now is training school, I'm not sure they still go to training school, like every 6month to keep them inform of the new and latest banking development ..
I like this English word and I don't know why.

I see that teller loosing his job before the end of this week, I see him implicating his oga, I see both of them going down together.

This I have seen.

If that is how bankers lose their jobs, there wont be anyone to attend to customers again.

Same thing with the energy or power distribution companies (whatever they call themselves).

Always cutting consumer's wire. I printed a copy of the memo that no one should disconnect your light even after 30 days. Everything has a procedure but alas some Nigerians are always afraid.

So I was at home one day. They came, just six days after serving us. I didn't talk much. Just waited until the technician climbed the pole and brought my phone.

He stopped halfway and asked what I was doing. I waved the doc at him and he came down, read and smiled. I smiled back and he left.

It's there on NERC's website.
Please can I see the memo sir cus they cut my light last two weeks after few days of bringing excess bill to me.
I went to their office here in Enugu to request for prepaid meter but they have been telling me they don't have prepaid meter for the past 8 months now.

After that experience, it will be the last thing on their mind. They will attend to him & make him leave that banking hall fast because Nigerians are usually intimidated by knowledgeable people.

Lol. True.

The issue here is not the bankers, it is the people/system. Immediately you leave the bank, another customer comes to withdraw that same dollar but rejects it given that bdc will not accept it. Then the bank gathers them for onward movement to the same CBN mentioned and they put HOMONGOUS handling charges on the bank. Then if you are a bank what do you do? Oya answer me.
Listen, I know that every memo from CBN is circularized to Bank branches immediately, so you can't say the Bank staff are ignorant but how customers behave with regard to issues controls to some extent how the staff react.
Even you that deposited that dollar cannot accept it if you come it in another say 2hrs,why? Because you know that bdc cannot give you naira and that your memo cannot sway them. It's a wholistic issue!

Today I understood the importance of being informed and I thought of sharing this information. It may be useful to someone.

I went to the bank to deposit USD, unfortunately among the notes is a $100 2003 series. The teller brought out the old series and said they don’t accept it. I have heard of BDC rejecting old notes but for a bank? So I thought I should check what CBN has to say, I googled “old note series CBN”, and found a Memo by CBN that says banks and BDC are not to reject old series or lower denominations.

I quickly informed the teller that there’s a memo to the effect of rejecting old series. The teller said he would have to confirm from his superior, he went ahead to call his boss, the boss came and was like “oh yes, we don’t accept old series”, so I brought out the Memo on my phone and showed it to him and said I need him to confirm that he would not be accepting the old series. He started stuttering and was like he will need to confirm, I said sir this thing is in black and white. I guess he was trying to save face, he went to his desk, made a phone call, then instructed the teller to accept the note.

Below is a copy of the Memo/Circular, in the event anyone might need it.

Thanks for the info. Please can you share more insights on how to open an account that allows you deposit dollar in the Nigerian bank. I use to hear of domicilliary account... Is it easy to open based on the requirements plus what other advantages and disadvantages does it have?

I did similar thing way back to when CBN introduced incentives for receiving dollars abroad. I think 5 naira for each dollar you receive, and also you can get the dollars sent to you in hard currency instead of allowing the bank to exchange it to naira for you. I had that knowledge already and I even ensured I saved the memo to that effect incase they feign ignorance .

I was to receive $4500 that day, so the teller lady was like I should put down my bank account number so that the money will be sent. I just laughed in my mind told her I want my money in hard currency, she looked at me for a while and then say okay. After verification, she paid me the money and gave me a book to write the amount I receive, I did. Then I noticed a column tagged “ incentive” she told me to write 25000, I did. Meanwhile, she did not tell me about the incentive. After writing it she expected me to leave lol… I just told her what about incentive the CBN asked you people to pay us, is your bank not complying with that? She was shocked and started apologising that she forgot bla bla ..:hahaha… I don laugh I just collected my money and left..

I saw many people that receive their money without even know anything like that happening ..lol
is the incentive still valid?

haaaa!!! I activated mine with a deposit of $10 and $3.39 was deductedfir activation I still have $6.61 left...this was today UBA.

It’s easy to open, just walk into any bank and ask to open a domiciliary account. You will need 3 referrals.

Advantages, when I opened my dom account, $1 was N360, today $1 is N560 meaning I gained N200 per $ in less than 2yrs. Imagine I had $10k, when $1 was 360, it means I have made N2m extra in less than 2yrs without lifting a finger. Although this wasn’t my purpose as mine was mostly work and travel purpose. But the benefit was just there.

No disadvantage I can think of.

It is not the job of a teller to follow CBN circulars. That is the job of the legal team who then advises the bank through internal memos. You cannot blame a teller if the legal team doesn't do their job.

For a customer, the teller is the first person to blame. It's the teller's job to blame whoever is responsible for his/her ignorance.

This particular OP now, when next hr goes to the bank and he is given that same 100 dollars 2003 series he will surely reject it because, when you try changing that old series in the black market the price won't be the same as 2017series.

I already established the fact that I won’t be accepting it from the bank. It is a torn Naira note, it’s the responsibility of the bank to phase it out.

It's rather unfortunate that you chose to belittle the job of the teller and his dignity as a human being doing a decent, legitimate job. I can categorically tell you that the Teller didn't of his on volition decide to reject the old $ note, there is a subsisting internal memo from his bank's Internal Control unit that customers should be discouraged from "dumping" old series Dollar bills on the bank. This is usually the case because of the high cost of processing those notes which are usually rejected by other customers. Let's make an effort not to undermine the dignity of humans doing a legitimate job no matter how "inferior" we perceive such jobs to be. Every legitimate job out there contributes to a functioning society and to the OP of this thread, I like how you were able to assert your knowledge of the policies guiding our financial sector in a dignified manner to the bank staff.
