"I've been saying it over and over again that we need to take Robert for deliverance. He needs deliverance!"

That was the very aspect his father did not want to hear.

"So, he's suspended for a week?" He asked.

"Yes."

"Alright. Let him serve his sentence." He made it sound as if it was a prison term.

His wife expected him to react more decisively, but she was disappointed. She shook her head. She just must design a way to make her only son go through 'deliverance'.






Chapter Two

Bobby was forced to be home alone for a whole week. If his parents, especially his mother thought this would reform him, they were wrong. By the third day he was at home, things became so boring. Once his father and father had left home, he would move from his room to the sitting-room. He had been told he must not step out of the house. The security man at the gate had been given the strict instruction that Bobby must not go out and could not receive any visitor.

Well, he still had access to the television. Now, he was at home with the housemaid. Being the kind of person he was, he was already thinking of another mischief. The house girl was his target. She should be in her twenties. Sefinatou was a Togolese and had been of service to the house for about a year now.

She seemed to be dedicated to her work and his mother had said she was the best house girl they had got so far. Could this same Sefinatou serve Bobby's whimsical purpose?

After Sefinatou served his breakfast and had come to clear the plates, he called her.

"There's something I want you to do for me," he informed her in Yoruba language. She was not the kind to shy away from work.

"What should I do?" She asked in return.

He stared at her briefly. "But it depends on whether you can do the work?"

"You want to wash your clothes?" she prempted. His mother had forbidden the house girl from washing Bobby's clothes. She said Bobby must take responsibilities.

He shook his head. "No, not that."

She became impatient. "Well, what is it?"

He nodded and stared briefly at her again. She was wearing a big t-shirt, the one she had slept in. Underneath it was a black skirt.

"You will get paid for for whatever you do." He kept smiling at her encouragingly.

"You no serious." She hissed and left for the kitchen. Bobby grinned. He knew he would win but he would not rush. In the afternoon, she came to serve his meal at the dinning table. By now, she had had her bath and was wearing a blouse and a skirt. The family has always treated Sefinatou well and had made sure she modestly looked good.

After the food, he was at it again. This time, he used another approach.

"You are looking very good, Sefinatou," he started.

She was surprised to hear that. He could see that it was a pleasant surprise.

"Honestly, you look very good."

She sighed and said nothing. She was back in the kitchen to wash the dishes. He went to meet her her there.

"I like your hair, dear Sefinatou."

If she were a white lady, she would have blushed.

"See, I'm m saying all this because I like you. I really like you, Sefinatou."

She was still silent but he knew he was making impression.

He brought out the naira notes and peeled five from the bulk. He put it on the kitchen table. "You can have it. Buy something with it."

The day Bobby resumed at the school, Mr. Johnson called him to his office. Bobby met Helen there.

"Now, listen to me and listen good," Mr. Johnson began. "Robert, I forbid you and Helen from having any relationship. You are here to learn, so stick to learning.

Bobby, I am warning you, I want you to steer clear of Helen. Thank God in a couple of months, you will be through with your programme."

Bobby listened in silence. Notably, he and Helen avoided looking at each other.

"Do I make myself clear?" Mr. Johnson thundered.

"Yes, yes, sir."


From then on, Helen snubbed him. He tried to explain his demeanor and apologize but she asked him to stay off. He moved on with his life.

Some weeks later, he was passing by the school cafeteria when he saw Mrs. Princess Johnson. She was supervising in the cafeteria, standing at the entry, and he had to walk right by her.

A bit awkward, Bobby got his meal and sat down. From where he was sitting, he kept glancing at her and, one time, he saw her looking at him. Then she looked away, like nothing had happened. In his mind, he could feel how hot Princess remained. He still had his fantasies about her.

For the remaining time that Bobby stayed at Dovey College, he was a 'good' boy. He soon forgot his dream about Helen.

He wrote his UTME, was able to meet the cut off marks required for his course and got admitted into Unlag to study Mass Communication.

His father would have preferred him to go to a private university, but Bobby didn't like the particular university his father wanted. He told his father he preferred Unilag.

Bobby thought Mr. Johnson was most likely glad to get rid of him. Well, life went on. Helen too must have gained admission. Bobby settled down for the new phase of life.

He was able to get Toyota Corolla car from his father. He also rented a room self-contain at Abule Egba as he said he could not stay at the overcrowded residential hall.
Bobby thought his dealings with Bayo Johnson and Princess, his wife, were over. He was very wrong, as things turned out.

It was a warm day in June and academic activities were well underway. Bobby was nineteen and his classes in the university didn’t look like they’d be that hard.

He’d finished up his morning classes and had just filled up his car at a petrol station in Sabo, Yaba.
