Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says efforts are underway to increase the retirement age of teachers in Nigeria’s public service from 60 to 65 years.

Osinbajo disclosed this on Tuesday while hosting the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Oluwabunmi Anani, Maltina Teacher of the Year, 2020 Winner, as part of the 2021 World Teachers Day celebration.

Anani was accompanied on the visit to the Presidential Villa by Uzodinma Odenigbo, Head of Public and Government Affairs, Nigerian Breweries Limited(NBL).

The vice president said that there were also moves to employ teachers into the public service starting from level 8 as against level 7.

He said, “So, I think it is also important to reward teachers; the Federal Government, on its part, has been doing a bit of work in trying to improve a lot of teachers.

“For example, there is a policy now, though not a law yet; it is still in the National Assembly about moving the retirement age of teachers in the public service from 60 to 65.

“That’s an additional five years; then also looking at their remuneration.

“I think one of the questions that have arisen is when the teacher comes into the public service; in the past, they used to come in at Level 7, which is not the level that a graduate would come in.

“Part of the policy is that they should come in at Level 8; but of course, this has to go through various processes and all that.’’

Osinbajo said President Muhammadu Buhari had shown tremendous concern about teachers and how to improve a lot of teachers.

He said the states had a role to play as issues of primary and secondary education were essentially the function of states.

“So, again, just to say that it is a tremendous honour and pleasure to meet with you and to congratulate you on your serving now for almost a whole year as the Maltina Teacher of the Year.

“To say that I hope and pray that you will do, even more, achieve, even more, attain even more and that you will not be discouraged.
“ You won’t be distracted and that God will help you as you help so many others.’’

Sir u ll definitely make a good leader,u are very lenient, meek, compassionate & accomodating. My only problem with u is d fact u have soiled, oiled ur hands with d evil party APC and ve inadvertently started lying, defending evil bcus of ur inanimate boss and ve easily been tossed around by people that ordinarily don't measure up to u both in & outside Aso Rock and as a result became d world number one & d 1st errand boy professor to a nepa bill certificate holder. Anyway, i know ur situation, incapacitation.
I will gladly vote 4 u anytime, anyday, anywhere over that jagaban,d UK based one man's mouth declared second president of d corn tree. Make Bubudinho,d captain of Daura cow Fc catch am with that name them dey call him over there, he wil go on season long, out of season injury.

Is Osinbajo crazy? What is the average life expectancy in Nigeria? A lot of Nigerians are dead before they even get to 60 years old. There is a reason why the Nigeria of today are filled with mostly young adults under age 40. He should please NOT increase the retirement age to 65.

Increase their salaries instead. 65 years in service without anything. They'll still have to bribe some people to get their pensions and gratuities.

Enhanced welfare package should be the focus not extending retirement age.

Teachers are poorly paid in Nigeria and you still want to increase their suffering. Let's start with making their salary structure the same as those in the health ministry

Dear FG,

You do know that most of these teachers already reduced their ages right?

Some claiming to be in their 60s are already in their 80s (come on guys, I wasn't referring to Tinubu, he is not even a teacher)

If we continue at this rate we will have our ancestors teaching history in schools.

In as much as I applaud the federal government in trying to fix broken parts of our teacher's terms of services, concentration shld be on the state government who has refused to give teachers the priority they needed. There shld be a penalty to such behaviour towards education.

That's not what the teachers are yearning for rather a proper enumeration considering the hasles this teacher go through.
Haba, our leaders will be doing as if they don't know the right thing. Increasing the age to a 65 that might be going through a mental state is quite irrational and suspect.

What the teachers need is decent wages and not age of retirement increment.

This does not make sense... Working till you're 65? Well the only advantage might be that they will be receiving a constant salary for those extra five years as against their never paid pension.

Good idea, but I suggest that at age of 60.. they shod process their gratuity and pay them... The remaining 5 years shod be under contract... because @ 65 wat strength do they to pursue their benefit...

He is the vice president, the second most powerful man in Nigeria today.

He is not a common driver.

And this policy clearly has his input based on the article.
