shadowprimezero: I was looking forward to the previously reported UCAV purchase signing. It didn't happen. While the agreements are commendable, we have been here before. Nigeria is fantastic at signing agreements, nothing really, actually materialises especially when it has to do with government. Who are they supposed to partner with, DICON? Isn't there an existing contract between DICON and Sur , a Turkish company, what has come out of that relationship? It would have been better if we had the likes of Proforce , NMT , EPAIL etc etc during the ceremony. Anyway , let's see how it goes. On the other hand it seems The Nigeria Navy has reportedly placed an order for 1x OPV-45 and a SA’AR S-72 Fast attack vessel from Israel shipyards Ltd. 5 Likes |

kabe1: Very skeptical about this. 45m Patrol Ships are exactly what he Navy builds in their shipyard - OPV-45 would be redundant unless the NN does not have trust in the Project. And a single Fast Attack vessel would not make sense if not part of a larger order. 2 Likes |

SuperSixSeven: Agreed, If true, where the heck does a 45 m ship and a 70 to 80 meter 'mini' corvette stand financially and logistically? Better to use scarce resources and get a full sea-going frigate while building local SDBs,or get ships logistically similar to the our p18 OPVs. I means NNS Unity and Centenary are larger than this Israeli corvette. The p18s are longer by 20 m and displace twice the weight! Yes,the Israeli ship may be armed but If you are going for a missile armed ship just go for a full frigate that can go far out to sea. My 2 kobo. Modified. I don't think 1 of these ships has been built yet. 1 Like |

I am genuinely puzzled by some of the posts here. Personally I think the NN is going about things the right way: 1) territorial waters; 2) contiguous zone; 3) exclusive economic zone; 4) continental shelf area; 5) UNCLOS AOR. Every bit of literature I've read from the NN speaks to this logical progression in the attainment of assets and capabilities. So why do people here keep mentioning their wishlists? Do they think the NN has got it wrong and they- from their armchairs- know better? 2 Likes |

Lurker4Long: The idea of a missile armed, big vessel that can go on long voyages. Where in world military history does this happen?. No where sir. You are doing long distance power projection with a flotilla. Nothing less. We are not ready for a flotilla for power projection beyong the GoG. There is no such money. Israel, the potential maker of the vessel also has the same kind of policy - all corvettes and unbelievable air dominance of their sub region. Better now, a few very modern, missile armed corvettes that can achieve extended range with supply ships, large OPVs, LSTs and lots of choppers and UAVs 1 Like |

RiceProducers: Not sure why you quoted my post. Looking at the logical way in which the NN is going about things, what aspects of the strategy with which you disagree and why? Telling us what toys you'd like doesn't count. How is the NN strategy deficient? - that's the starting point, and then you can start thinking about assets. Unless you think wishlists and emotions - subjective considerations - matter more than objective facts. 1 Like |

Vaccination - chosen as the word of the year in South Africa. Brings to mind this useful facility which incorporates all the data on vaccination on the continent, in one place: courtesy of the Africa Data Hub [Disclosure: various of my clients are invested in the Hub]. See what your country is doing; see what other countries are doing; see what vaccine your country is buying; see whether you depend on donations; etc... https://theconversation.com/want-to-know-about-vaccine-rollouts-in-africa-click-on-a-country-here-and-find-out-168621 1 Like

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Nigerian security forces have killed the new leader of an Islamic State-linked extremist group blamed for killing hundreds in Nigeria and neighboring West African countries, a senior security official said on Friday. Nigeria’s national security adviser Babagana Monguno said that Malam Bako, who recently succeeded Abu Musab al-Barnawi as leader of the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), was “taken out” by troops earlier this week. Bako's death could not be independently verified and there was no immediate confirmation from ISWAP. The development would be another heavy blow on ISWAP following last week's announcement by the Nigerian military that al-Barnawi was killed. Bako was in August appointed a member of the Shura Council, ISWAP’s consultative assembly, as the militants consolidated their position in the Lake Chad basin following the death of rival leader Abubakar Shekau of the Boko Haram extremist group. Monguno praised Nigerian security forces fighting the extremist rebels in the northeast and the Lake Chad basin for doing “an excellent job” after eliminating ISWAP's leader and his successor within a span of a month. He said the IS-linked group is facing a leadership crisis and that Nigerian military operations have put “a lot of pressure” on ISWAP and its rival Boko Haram. The reported killing of al-Barnawi and Bako have refocused attention to the conflict in Nigeria’s northeast, that began 12 years ago with an insurgency launched by the Boko Haram. The Nigerian military recently announced that about 6,000 militants have so far surrendered following Shekau’s death in June this year. Security experts told the AP that most of those surrendering were forced to join Boko Haram under Shekau or didn't want to associate with ISWAP, which has been Boko Haram’s rival since the groups' 2016 split. Unlike Boko Haram which often violently targets civilian populations, ISWAP targets the Nigerian military and those who aid soldiers. IS has also tried to capitalize on Shekau's death by launching a massive recruitment drive and gaining more Boko Haram-held territories especially within the Sambisa forest. The United Nations Development Program estimates that the conflict has resulted in 350,000 deaths, with 314,000 of those from indirect causes. 2 Likes |

NAF AIRCRAFT SUSTAIN OPERATIONS AROUND THE LAKE CHAD Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft under Operation Hadin Kai have continued their onslaught on terrorist and insurgent targets on islands and localities around the Lake Chad. On receiving credible Intelligence on 20 October 2021 that about 20 boats with suspected Boko Haram /ISWAP terrorists were converging for a meeting on an Island in the Tumbuns on the Lake Chad and at Malam Fatori, 3 NAF aircraft under Operation Hadin Kai were scrambled to carry out strikes on the targets. Reaching overhead the targets, the pilots observed a gathering of about 20 boats consisting of 5-7 suspected terrorists in each boat. Using a mix of bombs and rockets, the 3 aircraft carried out series of strikes and scored devastating hits on the targets leaving some survivors scrambling for their lives. The operation by the air component of Operation Hadin Kai yet again confirms the high concentration of terrorist and insurgent elements hibernating in the Lake Chad general area. Working alongside the Army and Naval components as well as other security agencies under Operation HADIN KAI, the Air Component will continue to sustain its operation until the area is rid of all terrorists and insurgents. Thank you. Edward Gabkwet Air Commodore Director of Public Relations and Information Nigerian Air Force 22 October 2021 1 Like
