Normal for Academic work. He supervised it. |

You never knew how it all started and ended between your supervisor and the ex student. |

I think it’s normal. You are working for him. Absolutely nothing here. But make sure he includes your name in the publication. That’s all |

He supervised the work either directly or indirectly. It's normal for supervisor to have their name as the corresponding author if your supervisor is kind enough he will add your name someone will add their colleagues before your name. |

Was it your idea? Without your supervisor, would you have been able to do the work on your own? If you are going to be a researcher, then you can talk to your advisor and let him allow you be the first author. If you are not interested in academics, allow him be the first author because publications are a part of his KPI. Another thing is that many students don't know the rigours of getting an article published. Some articles go through a review process that may last up to two years and the article would be rejected. If the article requires additional experiments, would you be there to perform them? Using myself as an example, I conceptualised, ran the experiments and wrote the article and put my advisor as first author. There were only two of us. So it was fine. I however had to remove another advisor from my author list because he was becoming predatory in attempting to shamelessly take outright credit for work he had condemned. 5 Likes 1 Share |

He should be included in the published write up because he gave you an input. When you go to Google scholar to read articles don't you see the names of the people that did a particular work/topic |

Well, if you plan to go into the teaching profession, I believe it's a good idea you allow him to go with it, and who told you you did the work all alone, like you said he supervised the work which makes him part of the work, he may not have actively written it but he guided you and thereby he's also a co-author. Most of the time he's going to be the one to pay for the publication and stuff. 1 Like |

I have supervised an MSc project that lead to a publication. I was the first author. I supervised another MSc student and gave her the condition that I will write the manuscript and be the first author. She rejected as she wanted to write it and be the first author. I told her to go ahead. She couldn't write the paper and nothing was ever published. By the way, I am based in Germany. Supervisor being the first author is normal, depending on the input. 9 Likes 1 Share |

hilltop007: It's not ethical on the part of your supervisor. I know many Nigerian lecturers do this. I guess you are still a novice in the publishing world and you can't go about it on your own. Allow him to publish it so far your name appears on it as one of the authors. It's also a very big win for you, like a very big win than not publishing it at all. |

If he SUPERVISED and gave you guidance to achieve your work, yes, you can both take credit. If you're credited, the contact person is usually unimportant. Plus it's usually one lead person used as a contact. Just get a copy of where it was published with your name so you can use it for academic promotions if you become a lecturer/researcher 1 Like |

hilltop007: Your lecturer is a good man, most Nigerian lecturer leverage on the work of their students, majority of them didn't notify those students. Besides, in the course of writing the project most of them will guide you towards the direction they wanted, sometimes they will be the one to give you the topic and tailor your research towards their needs. Is never a new thing in the academic arena. 1 Like |

It is the usual practice and it is not against the law. As a matter of fact, in the Western world, the result of your research work is the property of the school and not really yours. You only claim authorship. Besides, if your supervisor is a good man, making him as first author for a good research work will open doors for you. |

hilltop007: He is your supervisor. He has a hand in making the project come to reality. No do pass yourself. Allow the project to be published and that could be a stepping stone for you too. I searched the Internet few years ago for my name and saw my name littered every where with my Final Year Project published in many online publications, authored by my project supervisor and coauthored by me and one other person. I didn't know how it was done. I was so amazed. Its a stepping stone for you if you'll continue in the career path. 5 Likes |

deadie: Don't be proud of doing the wrong thing, that you are based in Germany doesn't make it right. It's unethical, your student's name should come as first author and yours as last author/corresponding author even if you drafted the manuscript, so far your students primarily carried out the research. Even ethics also demand you should even add the students email as corresponding author. With that it is a win-win for all, both yourself and the student. You don't lose anything by doing the above, the student do not lose anything also and everyone is happy. 5 Likes |

hilltop007:Ask him to be second author, he should at least give you that respect for doing the research, if he refuses, ask him not to publish. If he publishes without your consent, reach out to me and I'll have that publication revoked. |

Some lecturer do have a particular research topic in mind that they wish to publish after proper research, they will give one of the brilliant final year student under their supervision as his/her research topic, after the student have gone through the stress, financial aspects and completion of the whole thing, they (lecturers/supervisors) will publish it as their own. PS: they give utmost attention to this particular student, they can even go as far as texting or calling the student during their leisure time for guidance. |
