Frustration Of Nigerian Students Seeking To Study In South Cyprus by Valch: 6:32am On Oct 28, 2021 |
As Nigerians seek to gain international education experience, many Nigerians who have decided to further their education by deciding to apply to southern Cyprus universities have been left with shattered hope. Most Nigerians who have applied for admission in the EU part of Cyprus are still stranded in Nigeria after one month of school resumption, which lectures have started. The process of attesting student’s education credentials in Nigeria is filled with Beurocracy, which requires one to attest those documents at Nigeria ministry of education, foreign affairs, then lastly Cyprus consulate which is located in Lagos before sending all attested documents to the school in Cyprus for visa processing. That is not all, once the entry permit is granted by Cyprus immigration, an E-entry permit is issued which requires the student to apply online for what is called special entry permit, this special entry permit takes more than 48 hours before it is approved, after approval, the student have to return back to Cyprus consulate in Lagos for final stamping before the student could travel. Most Nigerian students are left to face these dilemma, just to gain international educational certificate. Most Nigerian students are still stuck in Nigeria after more than two months of completing their visa application processes, documents sent to their various schools, leaving them frustrated and depressed as they can not be able to join their fellow students in campus for various lectures and activities. For example, University of Nicosia, which is said to be the largest university in Cyprus, has many students still stuck in Nigeria due to the university inability to process their international student visa. When calls and emails were sent to the university by their students, the international students office only responds with same excuses from immigration. Checks by students have revealed that, the immigration office only issues permits on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. A mail was sent to all international students instructing them to follow their lectures via school moodle and webex. Calls put through to Cyprus consulate office in Apapa Lagos were answered by one of the consulate staff, by name Nura Lawal, he informed the students that the Nigeria consulate is not in charge of issuing entry permit but done in Cyprus, the students should contact their various universities in Cyprus. As of last week, universities in Cyprus are still offering admission to international students for Fall 2021 semester, a semester that has resumed in September, with lectures ongoing. Nigerian students are stranded, frustrated and confused on what step to take next, as most of them have paid their tuition fees and all fees required by universities in Cyprus and immigration. |

[hello valsh let's connect together. I got admission in neapolis university for fall this yr which they postponed to 2022 due to delays in certifying my docs. My school told me probably November ending/early December migration will issue me my visa. They said due to covid Suge recently in Cyprus migration now reduced staff at migration in order to contain the virus. My University told me they will let me know as soon as they start processing my entry permit. But I planned to call them by 15th of this month to Know how far. My friends who got their own visas in September got theirs without much hassles, it took the 2weeks and few days to get their visas. |
