Gov. Ugwuanyi moves to restore Enugu recreation parks to original purpose

Concerned about the increase in population of Enugu State and the imperative for functional recreation and relaxation centres for the residents, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, on Monday, visited some bastardized state government parks in Enugu City, determined to restore them to their original purpose comparable to the newly established Enugu Unity Park, adjacent to the popular Michael Okpara Square, Independence Layout, Enugu.

The recreation centres visited by Gov. Ugwuanyi, in company of the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Ugonna Ibe and a major stakeholder in the state, Hon. Gary Eneh, were the newly remodeled Eze and Onwudiwe parks located at Uwani, Enugu, the Ejindu Park, Coal Camp Enugu and the Ude Ubaka Park, along Agbani Road, Enugu, which has been illegally converted to churches, residential areas and automobile workshops.

Gov. Ugwuanyi made funds available for immediate clearing of grasses and removal of other obstructions at Eze, Onwudiwe and Ejindu parks, disclosing that the state government will follow due process to restore Ude Ubaka Park to its original purpose.

The governor’s mission is to ensure that these government facilities are put into effective use in line with their original purpose in the overall interest of residents of the state.

He therefore assured jubilant residents living within the areas, who hailed him over the visit and planned intervention on restoring the parks for recreation and relaxation, that the facilities will soon be put into effective use.

The Chairmen of Enugu South and Enugu North local government areas, Hon. Monday Eneh and Hon. Emeka Onunze respectively, joined the governor and his team in the inspection tour of the facilities.

shocked Enugu Town plan that was abandoned in 1900, roads, parks, railways etc has been converted to residential and business places.. go to Golf Estate, you won't remember we 9nce had a railway there ..
Wish the state could go back to the original town plan created by the colonial masters, they made Enugu a city!

Ejindu park, where I learned how to ride a bicycle in 1991 grin

I was a complete "Egbe camp" through and through cheesy That is the place I grew up. We were the "boress" generation. Anybody who knows what the word means can relate to an era of technological innovation by children in that part of Enugu.

This park was well maintained with many facilities provided for our play.

Knock down shoprite and restore the old polo park as well.
We need more recreation parks in the coal city. Enugu is becoming congested and suffocated.

Those who built churches or other houses in the parks should be prosecuted and made to pay fines.

Old Phoenix need to be restored. Those who sold the lands and their buyers should be arrested.

If I was governor, shoprite would’ve been demolished.

I think he should build another Polo park instead. We need a centrally located shopping plaza like Shoprite, where there are other facilities like a ferris wheel, etc.

He can do a new Polo park around Nchatancha Nike.

There was sanity in Enugu many years ago. I think after Jim Nwobodo, those after him forgot about the master plan or they didn’t know about it.

Look at all the schools during those era….schools had plans, large expanse of land and ALL of them had dedicated a significant portion of land for sports and physical exercises…CIC, Nike Grammar school, Union Awkunanaw, St Patrick’s Emene….Remember Bigard memorial Uwani?…..

Now every riffraff would build a two or four storey house and use a few apartments as private school…wtf. Who approves all these nonsense??

Even schools in the country sides have beautiful playgrounds…..Colliery comprehensive Ngwo, St Paul’s Eke where monarch or diamond brewery football team used to train. Chai

There should be recreational parks all over coal city.

Anybody well grounded in Enugu will not be deceived by this cheap propaganda. We know that it is housing estates that will end up in those parks. Houses that will eventually be sold to his friends and cronies. We know this is another land grabbing mission!!!

For example, Udu Ubaka park sited in this report is not a state owned property. This land was formely owned in the 1980's by the late Igwe Stephen Udu Ubaka. Stephen Udu Ubaka was the former traditional ruler of Oraifite town in Anambra State. His children has since sold the land to a man from Awgu LGA Enugu state with the name "Duke and Gold". The man is late now.

It is a private property and discerning minds will question the mission of this land-grabbing governor on another man's property.

It will not end well for him if he ends up forcefully grabbing a widow's land from her just because he is the governor. He has done it in several other places in Enugu and God is watching him. Soon, he will blame the commissioner for being the one stealing people's properties.

This one will surely end in tears for this lazy governor!!! If he thinks nature does not have a way of balancing our deeds here on earth......let him continue.

There are structures that shouldn’t be tampered with. I think Polo was one of them. Enugu Prisons should’ve been relocated for something like Shoprite.

Polo park nurtured talents like JJ Okocha, Solomon Okoronkwo and Chinedu Obasi (Ogbuke) honed their skills playing for Riverlane boys at that field. We all marched at that very place during the children’s day celebration.

I can relate to this, I was in Ozalla Boys and we have a standard sports facility, including a standard football pitch and a tracks for racing. We even had a standard lawn tennis court and a volleyball pitch.
