Inler77:actually keeping public peace i.e protecting lives and property is police's primary duty.... what are the likely consequences protest, it makes unsafe properties both public and private as well as lives of citizen... Therefore handling protest is fundamental to their training, even the army teaches it officers 2 Likes |

The Nigerian police force have batons, riot helmets, riot shields, canister launchers for launching tear gas canisters and even gas masks. I have seen the riot police being deployed in an amazingly professional manner to quel OAU students protests around 2003/4, I believe that arm of the police force still exists as I heard tales of them being used again inside OAU around 2017. The use of lethal force to quell protests by the police is a case of choice and it has only continued to get worse because there hasn't been any consequences. To be fair, it might have been a ill-thought decision after considering increasing numbers of civilians with lethal weapons and increasing numbers of casualties in the police force from protesters. Rather than train their personnels on how to disarm dangerous people using non-lethal means, they opted for the worst option. Of course the riot police will be deployed with a reasonable number of riffle carrying colleagues in case things change very fast. However, they should have taken the opportunity to train 30k personnels for free at a time when the police is looking to expand its numbers by a large number and I doubt if the NPF has the capacity to train more than 10k per year. They could have also negotiated the inclusion of some other trainings so that those 30K personnels won't be useful for only anti-riot purposes. You never know what new things they might learn and it could have also created a bridge for future partnerships in training and equipping of the NPF. The government should lobby Germany to consider NSCDC instead. The legislative arm of government need to pass laws limiting the use of force against protests and attach stringent punishment to deter offenders. They also need to reduce the number of police personnels with assault riffles on police duties that do not require the use of lethal weapons within towns and cities. In fact if possible, only men of tactical/special squads and the police mobile force should be with assault riffles at all times in case of emergency, while the others shall be armed with pistols, shotguns etc for self-defense but provisions should be made to ensure that they can have access to assault riffles from their amouries when needed. It's amazing how an organization that had a very good structure became counterproductive within a short period. I do not know what happened with the police in 2005 but I believe that was when the gallop downwards began and the speed keeps increasing every year. This was when the police headquarters was considering deploying the anti-riot unit under the police mobile force during the endsars protests. https://nairametrics.com/2020/10/20/endsars-police-to-launch-nationwide-deployment-of-anti-riot-police-unit/ 3 Likes

The legislature also needs to put a stop to the act of using police and military personnel as private guards for private citizens. A large fraction of the men of the mobile police force are presently serving as ordelies to rich private citizens and that played a part in precipitating the uselessness of that force. Open the market to the private sector, let them employ boys that would otherwise be thugs and cultists and arm them with batons and pepper sprays. 7 Likes |

SamuelAnyawu: I doubt if those men in suits around Jowizaza are DSS personnels, many have reported that they are men of NPF SPU. NPF also uses Tavor and he could have gotten the suits for them. DSS no dey follow Dangote and the likes sef. It is only on special occasions that they are attached to ministers, like when Okonjo Iweala was going after the subsidy cabals and they were threatening her life, same with Sanusi Lamido Sanusi when he was establishing AMCON and rich and powerful people were threatening him, they both asked GEJ for extra protection before some men of the DSS were attached to them for a short while. And the nonsense will stop when the legislature wants it to stop. It is beyond the executive arm of government as many agencies have now perfected the act of blackmailing government. They will simply refuse to go work and when crime skyrockets and the government is being blamed, whoever is in power will simply tone down. There are lots of rogue agencies/departments like that in Nigeria today. 8 Likes

In the video below, Sunday Okebata, an indigene of Izombe, Oguta LGA, Imo State, narrated to BBC Igbo how the Nigerian Army burnt his home and caused the death of his wife, Faith Inung Okebata, during the mayhem that engulfed Izombe last month. According to him, he was at work on Friday 8th October 2021 when he got a call from his wife that an argument between some Izombe youths and some Soldiers led to the Soldiers shooting dead one of the youths. Other youths immediately apprehended the Soldiers, disarmed them, and lynched them. When reinforcement Soldiers arrived and saw their comrades dead, they went on a rampage destroying lives and property in Izombe Okebata said his wife would later tell him that Soldiers invaded their home where his wife, two kids and mother, who was down with stroke, were, and threatened to kill them at gunpoint if they did not provide the youths. When his wife and mother pleaded that they dont know where the youths were, the Soldiers set the house alight and left It was in the process of his wife trying to get the children and his mother, who cannot move unaided due to stroke, out of the burning house, that she got badly burnt. He said that he managed to move his wife to a Hospital in Owerri that night and the Doctor told him that she had suffered 41% burns and her lungs were also affected. His wife would later die in his arms. Sunday Okebata is crying for justice https://www.bbc.com/igbo/afirika-59415410

Terrorists have formulated plans to launch attacks on Ogun border communities and other border communities across the country. This was revealed by the Department of State Services. The DSS said it has intelligence that the terrorists intend to hatch their sinister plot on military bases in border towns. The secret police, however, asked Customs and other security agencies in the country to put counter-measures in place to frustrate the dark plot by the insurgents. In a letter dated November 25, 2021, addressed to the Customs Area Controller, Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun Area Command, Abeokuta, the DSS said: “Available intelligence indicates plans by insurgents and criminal elements to carry out simultaneous attacks on military posts and bases in various border communities across the nation anytime from now. “In view of the foregoing and the likelihood, such attacks not limited to the military personnel only, all law enforcement and security agencies with operational bases at border communities are advised to take note of the above threat and emplace countermeasures with emphasis on personal security of operatives to frustrate the planned attack, please.” Nigeria has been bedeviled by deadly attacks by terrorists for over a decade. Thousands of innocent Nigerians including scores of soldiers have been fell by the terrorists. |

-leader of last Sunday attack killed Special Forces of the Nigerian military have chased dozens of bandits and other criminal elements to their hideouts in Kaduna forests and killed them. The onslaught on the men of the underworld followed their nefarious activities along the ever-busy Abuja-Kaduna highway, which had constituted a serious security threat and unnecessary nuisance to innocent travellers. The leader of the bandits who killed a former Director of the FCT and abducted his police orderly and many others during last Sunday’s attack on the highway was reportedly killed during a fierce battle between the Special Forces and the bandits. Meanwhile, there was no report of kidnap incidence along the highway within the last 24 hours, even as combat-ready security agents were seen on motorbikes and other vehicles, heading to the forests in search of more bandits. An official statement on the development from the police in Kaduna is yet to reach journalists. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2021/11/just-in-special-forces-kill-scores-of-bandits-terrorising-abuja-kaduna-road/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

DubaiLandLord1:This was the way Boko Haram was operating, and ISWAP was created to correct Boko error. Just imagine make the commander and all the officers in charge of the battalion that lead the attack on izombe are court martial, discharge dishonourably and jailed... This madness will surely end. This same soldiers will flee for their dear lifes when they sight ISWAP, they will abandon their weapons and still wail they do not have enough weapons. 4 Likes |

DubaiLandLord1: That's never going to happen. Ask the army about it today and they will tell you it's all fake news meant to discredit their professional fighting force. Since this year I don't think I've gone a week without reading about the NA going on rampage somewhere and killing like the einsatzgruppen in eastern Europe. Any slight argument and they go open fire. The youths fight back and the soldiers will come back in bigger numbers and kill some more and then collect the bodies and bury them where no one knows They will then issue press releases denying everything and yelling about how they are professional in words and deeds and it's all a set up to paint them in a bad light. Who exactly do they think they are fooling? Tufia. The NA needs to stop acting like angel Micheal put them in charge over the life of every Nigerian and they can therefore decide who lives and dies. This has to stop because it's getting harder to tell them apart from the people they are supposed to be protecting us from. 3 Likes |

DubaiLandLord1: Commendable but not good enough. There are tens of thousands of these bandits and the latest news is that they are more heavily armed than our security agencies. And I'm now hearing that they are either Boko Haram or are being infiltrated by them. Their activities are stifling commerce and increasing the economic burdens that the citizenry is facing. We need to go after them HARD, and stop kitten footing around. Killing 12 and 20 here makes little difference because their ranks keep increasing and they are becoming better trained and more heavily armed. My biggest fear is actually that these bandits who are mostly from other West African countries will soon by their numbers and equipment overwhelm our security agencies. When that happens it will be every man for himself. 5 Likes |
