Roland let me give a better illustration of my point from present happenings.

Take the Hausa language. After the infringement of Islam into our part of Africa, the fulanis went on a religious conquest and successfully conquered many smaller satellite tribes. Vast majority of them co-opt the Hausa language. Today someone from Adamawa in the east will go all the way to the sokoto in the west and still understand them.

Because of the unity of their language, they were able to even form a sociopolitical system that has worked for all of them. Many years ago someone from borno will not understand someone from sokoto, but that's not the case today. Today they see themselves as one and are united in the same causes.

This is as apt my point as any. Same languages help in uniting people.
They are United indeed, with all those killings coming out from there. Oga there is no unity there but cheating, some persons are sitting on the head of the rest.

capitalist built news organization painting socialism in a bad light, human greed at work cheesy cheesy cheesy

ask yourself why saudi arabia with 38m people is flourishing selling oil

while venezuela of 25m people with the largest provable reserves of oil in the world is bankrupt cheesy [/s]
You keep typing more nonsense it's starting to crack me up cheesy cheesy U.S. sanctions have little to do with the catastrophe that happened in Venezuela. Mass starvation and exodus faced by Venezuelans are the natural consequence of the socialist policies implemented by Chavez and Maduro. Most countries that have tried socialism have all failed. That's a self hating black man. You see them all around licking the ass of their European slave masters whenever an aspect of African culture or tradition is praised.

I really don't understand the point you're making.
But let's delve into this further.
What are the aspects of "African culture" you think should be praised?

Please think deeply about this question before you answer.

This is not an excuse to not to learn your lingua franca. Every person on that list knows how to express themselves very well in English and use it to transmit their knowledge.

Furthermore, Our native languages are dying out and it's not necessarily a bad thing. Language is only afterall a means of communication. Different languages have always acted as a bridge in society.
An effect that highlights our differences as a specie.

If losing our languages mean we {humanity} get to be united as a whole. I'm all for it. Someday, one can get to any point of the globe and not be hindered by an inability to understand the other.
Are you saying you're willing to embrace the white man's language as a universal language while your own fade away?

If speaking one language will lead to unity then North Korea and South Korea won't have been at loggerheads for decades, neither would have Lebanon entered a 15year long civil war because they speak Arabic and French as lingua franca.
What brings about peace and unity are creedal belief and justice. When these two are missing if you like speak the same language and smile at each other at any given opportunity there won't be peace and unity.

You have made good points, but it still doesn't take away from my main point of all these arguments.

Achieving global peace is a multi-pronged approach. There are key factors that affect humanity socially. LANGUAGE, RELIGION, POLITICS, TRIBAL CHAUVINISM, ECONOMIC SYSTEMS. etc.

We can solve these issues simultaneously but it will take time. We are already doing this on a global stage with relative success.

That the UN exists is testament to how united we are becoming as a society on the whole. This has never happened since the beginning of homosapiens civilization. Almost every person on earth is represented in the UN. Striking bargains everyday, averting crises and preventing major global wars like the ones we had.

Of course, it hasn't been perfect all around but it has been a gigantic step towards all human beings on earth understanding ourselves better and beginning to share common goals.

Language alone will not guarantee us a united world but it will be one step closer.

Example, the word selfie, recently became an official English word.
Can you tell me this word in Igbo, yoruba or Hausa.
Or the words, technology or laptop or charger.

Isn't it better, all human beings share a basic tool of understanding?

I haven't really watched neves. But we really need a KDB kinda player. Especially for Lukaku to work here. Or we get wingers who thrive on running in behind opp defenders, taking on players at top speed and looking to cut in or square play. The likes of Sterling, Vinicius, Gnabry, Coman, Mbappe.

No apologetic feelings
But I think your IQ is too low
The fact Northerners speaks the same language does that translate into unity...many language speaks the same language, have same cultural background, have same religion, have same historical background yet they're war zones Somalia Iraq a perfect.
Now lets me stay local not go international
I'm a Yoruba boy
Yoruba is an homogeneous society translating to the fact they have the same historical breakground, cultural background, and same language (Yoruba) with a particular geographical location(South west Nigeria) despite this they're still divided ( yea very shocking)
We have the Oyos Ijexa (Ijesha), Lucumi, Ota (Aworis), Ketus, Ekitis, Jebus (Ijebu), Egba, Lucumi Ecumacho (Ogbomosho), and Anagos though they're have same history but divided by mere intonations and tones.
Imagine a group of people living in the geographical location, same belief, history, language, culture and language been divided by just mere intonations and tones...one of my professors particularly told there is no perfect homogeneous society we just have LEAST DIVERSE SOCIETY. The whole United world is myth cos the basic of the society FAMILY are divided across of alot of beliefs, ideology, and even politics, you can't take away preferences/choice from people as far people have choices to make then there will be differences. A state of utopia is a myth, a pure fantasy. France tried it in Africa by the policy of assimilation despite the fact forced labor and indignant policies were enforced on the natives there were some African that loves their traditions and cultures. I can go on and on but let me stop here grin
I don't know about Somalia but Iraq is far from being homegenous culturally, historically and even in terms of religion. Kurds, Chaldeans, Assyrians, sunni Muslims, shitte Muslims etc. They are still together is due to the ruthless work of Saddam Hussein.
I agree with your points though. I sincerely doubt the world can be united or become an Utopia in our lifetime or even during our grandchildrens.

It's good your senses are now coming around.
Wait, why do we need to create a new or neutral language when we already have Soo many. English as a language is already the fastest and most absorbing language.
A lot of the current English words were adapted from Gael Scottish, Greek, roman and Germanic roots. And it is already the most spoken and learned language in the world throughout the continents.

I have no personal preference for which particular language is universal but it is what it is already.
To deny this is to continue to be shallow mindedly chauvinistic.
At the rate we're going. In 100 years, English is bound to be spoken by 3/4 of the world. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. It means more people having basic understanding of themselves.

I think DonJ meant to say erasure of language will lead to better communication and globalisation but he misspoke and doubled down on it.

Losing African language means little to some of us from South South. We only have to travel 2km to see another village speaking a different language so we all communicate in pidgin. I doubt up to 10% of Ijaw youngsters living outside their village can speak their language. Language is just a tool of communication for us.

The three words you mentioned have translations in my own native language. You may need to enslave yourself from the shackles of the white man if you think your culture is not worth preserving. Can you point me to any interview you've seen of the Indian President speaking English? He's educated.

I also don't see Asians abolishing their languages for English. In fact their phones come out of the factory with their languages. I don't see why you think the white man's language should unify us as humans. Our beauty is in our differences.

I read everything from hensben’s initial post U responded to and subsequent posts that followed; I know u didn’t start the whole insults/diatribes. Well, personally I feel u should’ve just ignored the first guy that struck out ur posts and ended it with with an offensive post.

I’m not holding u by my standards o, but personally I would’ve just ignored him and continue the discussion with more polite people that had commented on the topic. At most , I would report the post and move on with the discussion with someone else.

As regards the topic itself I understand the point Hensben was trying to make , tho using that Reno’s post on IG as the basis for making a a case for the way he writes English messed things up for him.

I don’t know how Reno thinks , but I really do not see the correlation between someone bearing an English name(which he was christened when he was a toddler and has no control over ) and being unable to speak their native language . English is the language of learning in Nigeria,it’s ironic most of the people he mentioned that became great with their native names actually speak the English language perfectly well ( I know some of them even wrote books in English language that won them international recognition ); So I don’t really understand what point he was trying to make. In the course of the discussion I discovered English seem not to be Hensben’s first or second language , so it’s understandable some of the basic rules of English language he’s unable to observe when he writes . I would not mock/castigate/blame him for this.

Personally I do not think a universal language is adoptable . I remember someone ( I don’t know if it was you ) pointed it out that having a grasp of the English language is one of the pre-conditions for u to work in the UN, but it’s actually funny that the Chinese representatives will always choose to speak their language at the general assembly knowing fully well most listeners don’t even understand “go” or “come” in mandarin. I did a little check on google that revealed with a population of little above 1.4billion , just 10million people in China speak English . Less than 1% of their population don’t speak English despite the country having a literacy level of 98.6% .

I’m not the best with figures but to me those figures above are saying the most populous country on earth with over 1.4billion has refused to Learn English nor any other potential universal language for reasons best known to them. So how will the dream of universal language u desire be achieved ?

While reading the posts in the last few pages I saw a lot of sense in what he posted, Languages are just a means of cmmunication and many languages have died in this Nigeria. For us to have like 10 dominant languages and 3 major ones, Means 1000s of languages have died. Like the example you give in South South where every 2 km is a different language, so what is there to protect when you cant even communicate with nearby village thus adopting Pidgin, or even in many of those NorthEast and North central place where Hausa has replaced their local language.

How popular your language is goes hand in hand with how powerful economically your country is. WHen I read Michael Ballacks biography, I learnt that in 1980- 90s Germany students were taught either English or Russian, with the fall of USSR fewer students opted for Russian
Now almost all German kids growing up understand English

In a place like Belgium, The people speak whichever language is closest to them either Dutch, English, German or French not even their native Flemish

Whether your language survive or dies depend on how economically powerful you are. In another 100yrs Maybe half the world might be forced to understand Chinese as the language of commerce. Most of those arguing are those who grew up with Yoruba Igbo Hausa or a major language. Preach this language preservation to a man whose language died even before he was born

Most of us understand our language less than our parents, our parents less than their parents. If you are alive to hear your 5th descendant, you will struggle to reconcile what they speak now with what you call your own tongue

so I ask, is there anything special about our own culture and traditions? And what exactly are these "African traditions" we should be proud of ?

You and any black man should be proud of numerous African traditions and cultures because they are highly regarded and respected.

Since the history of man, African cultures have greatly influenced history, literature, research in medicine through genetics, human psychology, agriculture, food production, cuisine, maternal health, fashion, architecture, engineering, mathematics (I bet you did not know mathematics originated from Africa) and more importantly global industrialization and science. Do you realize we were able to complete advanced medical practices like anesthesia, child birthing, heal broken bones, poisoning, including food poisoning and other numerous medical practices that modern world has built upon? African tradition and culture reflected through sculptures, paintings, writing and music (Jazz, hip-hop, afrobeat) have been instrumental in the development of scientifically proven theories related to human evolution and adaptation.

Examples are not limited to Nok art, Benin and Ivory sculptures, Igbo Ukwu arts. The casting of bronze pieces, molding of clay, woodcarvings, wall writings, leatherworks, to create these cultural artifacts have been studied globally and in many instances protected and preserved. These cultural artifacts have provided corner pieces in our journey as humans before the industrial revolution. African traditional language were instrumental in the development of other foreign languages.

Peer reviewed research have shown that foreign languages like English/ Mandarin can be traced back to African ancestral languages. English/ Mandarin/ Creole/ French/ Arabic/ Spanish were influenced by African language and culture. Basically, African language influenced the tone, sounds and other aspects of many modern languages. Remember the box office movie "The Black Panther"? The movie that amassed over $1 Billion in revenue.. Well, the language used in that movie was Xhosa, an indigenous language in South Africa. Should be talk about the influence of books written by great African authors like Chinua Achebe, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Nadine Gordimer, Nurudin Farah, Ayi Kwei and others on global linguistics and literature? So what are we talking about here?

I can go on and on!
