Watford's Emmanuel Dennis and fellow striker Victor Osimhen have both dropped out of Nigeria's squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

Watford have reportedly refused to release Dennis, who has scored eight Premier League goals this season.

A Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) statement said Dennis had been excused because Watford were "baring fangs".

Osimhen has been ruled out following a positive Covid-19 test and is still recovering from facial fractures.

The injury in November was expected to rule the Napoli frontman, 23, out of the tournament, which starts on 9 January in Cameroon.

Dennis, 24, will now be available for Watford's league games against fellow strugglers Newcastle and Norwich, as well as their FA Cup third round tie at Leicester City on 8 January.

Watford manager Claudio Ranieri said: "I knew the board and Nigerian board were speaking. I accept every decision they find and that for me is finished."

Asked whether the decision for Dennis to remain with his club disrespected Afcon, Ranieri added: "No. They have a lot of players and then they changed the managers and everything. We were ready to give over the players, they didn't do it. The two boards spoke and for me it is OK.

"Of course he wanted to go to play but he also wanted to help Watford."

Dennis and Osimhen have been replaced by Sparta Prague striker Peter Olayinka and Olympiakos forward Henry Onyekuru, while the Super Eagles have also been forced to make two changes in defence.

Rangers defender Leon Balogun and Cyprus-based Abdullahi Shehu have both been replaced by West Brom's Semi Ajayi and Tyronne Ebuehi of Italian Serie A side Venezia.

Super Eagles hit by Covid and administrative issues
Dennis was not part of Nigeria's initial 37-man provisional squad submitted by former coach Gernot Rohr, but added to the 40-man party in December.

His inclusion in the final squad led to Watford manager Claudio Ranieri revealing the club could refuse to release him.

Ranieri said Nigeria missed a deadline to advise the Premier League club that the forward was being considered for selection.

BBC Sport Africa understands the NFF conceded it may have left it late and is now in a weakened position to request Dennis to travel.

"In-form rapid raider Emmanuel Dennis, whose English Premiership club is baring fangs, has been excused to provide room for Czech Republic-based forward Peter Olayinka," Nigeria's official account said on Instagram.

Despite being keen to travel to Cameroon for the continental showpiece, Osimhen officially informed interim coach Augustine Eguavoen about his decision to withdraw on Thursday.

His latest coronavirus problem and Napoli's reluctance to release him for the tournament led to the player sending an official letter.

"He just felt he was not in the right of mind, physically and psychologically, to play for Nigeria with all that is going on right now," a leading NFF official told BBC Sport Africa.

The three-time African champions, who have appointed Portuguese Jose Peseiro as their permanent coach, are in Group D along with Egypt, Guinea-Bissau and Sudan.

They open their campaign against the Pharaohs in Garoua on 11 January.

Even the players themselves don't want to come play for the country.

It seems Nigeria might not even make it past the group stages sef...

Trust me, if I were to be a big player, I will so much sabotage the team throughout the duration of AFCON ehn, that they will wish they had released me to represent my country. grin

But seriously, can anyone stop the likes of Mane or Saleh? Hell no! But since these guys are rising stars, hence, the rubbish stunt these idiotic clubs are pulling.

And again, are these guys really passionate about playing for their country at the AFCON? But I guess nothing will stop them were it to be the World Cup. Well it is always money over patriotism...And again,
he who pays the piper dictates the tune.

For those bashing CAF for the timing of the AFCON, you can't allow it take place when any other major global or continental showpiece is holding.. Low attendances, coverage, and viewership will mar it, hence, marketing and financial implications. Take the Asian Cup for example.

Even if CAF wants to move it to the summer, it will mean having to omit one AFCON, to make it fit without clashing with the world Cup and Euros. Except they want to make it every 4 years and in odd years too.

Quite unfortunate.... the truth is that the Euros is the only credibly organised tournament, out of all these continental tournaments.... the rest are confused .... I dont know y a tournament should be played during the mid season ... the AFCON was one reason Ferguson or real madrid dint like buying African players , even if they did, they will make sure he is not a vital player in the team... just look at Liverpool, I just pity them and the sad thing is that most times , when they come bk, they loose form due to fatigue

The truth of the matter is these clubs disrespects AFCON and in general Africa.

Imagine this was a European competition, would they still stop him?

CAF is too weak abeg,

Well what can I say, CAF will just bend over and let this clubs knack them anyhow.

Imagine klopp calling AFCON a little competition, Napoli was even threatening with lawsuits. This clubs will not hesitate to drop these players if and when they loose form.

Nobody wants to play for a useless country or risk warming the bench for a very longtime if he disobeys his board.

they is no pressure bro, denis preferred helping watford than coming n sitting on the bench in AFCON, he would av bin with us assuming he is a guaranteed starter n dts wat NFF cnt assure him n he choosed to stay n help watford dt needed him the more...
If u u read within the lines in dt ranieri interview, u would understand the real meaning of "meeting with the NFF got a mutual understanding with NFF"

abeeg no start, even if it's not given d respect we seek, Denis wasn't forced to reject dt call up, it was his own personal choice since NFF placed him below other attackers in the starting order n it seems its to just come n stay on the bench all day wen watford need him more
Denis isnt bigger than d likes of sallah, mane, haller n mahrez dt are more influential to dier clubs n would be missed once dey leave, or u tink their clubs are happy to lose such stars? u tink dt Liverpool wont hold on to sallah n mane if dey av the chance??
d point is dt, denis coming to AFCON depends on his personal decision, stop playing victim card on this case if he doesn't wants to come, or are u saying dt watford should chase him out of their camp? no b by force na

All these people that are pulling out and pulling in because their club said, I thought FIFA's rules states that no club has the authority to prevent a player from representing his country for any FIFA recognized tournament? Or did the rules change because it's AFCON? Because we didn't see any of this rubbish during the last Euros. What exactly is happening?
the guy preferred helping watford than Nigeria simply because NFF cnt guarantee him starting or even playing, an interview I read on a local outlet said the likes of iheanacho, ighalo, Simeon n even awoniyi are all ahead of him in the starting order saying he is new n need more time to adapt to Africa football..
if Denis na my brother, I would easily convince him to stay in watford n help them escape relagation than come to AFCON, sit on the bench without doing anything, only for him to go back n meet Watford already relegated n even lose his starting spot in dt team..

Any player that pulls out cos of the shit from their club should never be called to the super eagles again. What nonsense are the Europeans doing. I believe osimehen didn't contact COVID. It's a cover to also ditch the AFCON. Why in the world do we rubbish ours for theirs all the time
