Hello here, I am really sad right now, I'm confused. My daughter's teacher called me to tell me she's not coping in class, she even said she organized extra lesson for her. She can't tell the difference between figures and number, she can write figure one and letter A. Nothing else. She doesn't come home to recite poems or anything but she sings those songs she hears from other kids or anywhere. Just not the school ones.
I love my daughter, I adopted her at age 1 and since then I have been trying to make life easier for her, I got a tab for her at 2 and half, She has toys, bikes, everything a kid should have for mental and academic growth.
I make sure she doesn't get mentally stressed. I love to make her comfortable. She's very active, smart ( in my own view). She operates my phone and her tab just fine, She understands complex conversations.
I make learning fun for her, I've tried everything.
Please, parents, teachers, experienced adults. I need your help here.
I don't know what being tagged "a slow learner" would do to her mental health. I need her to catch up.

Your child is just 3 years of age, and not 5 or 6. Relax and take a chill pill. Kids don't all grow up at the same pace and don't grasp it all at once. Allow the child grow at her own pace abeg! undecided

Jeezzz! Every parent now expects their child to be of genius breed as if we were half as intelligent as these kids are today in our own time. Sheesh!

It's not about me, I'm only concerned about her welfare ( you know how things can be in school when you are not considered smart enough) I dont want her to go through that.
I couldn't read until I was eight. I graduated best of my class in primary n junior sec school.
So I know that that she isn't coping now doesn't mean she's daft. No.
I just want a means to make her at least average in class, to avoid being bullied. Frustrated teachers are the worst bullies.

What exactly do they expect a 3year old to catch up on??

They just need to learn how to improve their motor skills with colouring, playing and different fun activities. Learning how to share, how to listen, how to take turns and no serious academic work.

My goodness!! Please withdraw her from school if you can and play with her, teach her using fun activities nothing serious.

This is why kids start school at age 5 abroad.

That child is perfectly okay. The teacher obviously isn't.

If her teacher, who has had experience with children of similar age is the one complaining, then it is a cause for concern.

Seek advise on what else you could do from the school. Maybe the headmistress and other teachers could help. You could also buy a board and start taking her in those assignments small small too. Also, buy picture books you could read together. I hope this is helpful, my experience with pedagogy is minimal.

Well done for being a good parent and loving the little madam.

Relax, she is still only 3. There is no need to start making her experience the heat and competitiveness of it all, pumping stress and anxiety into her life abeg. undecided

If you are worried she might be bullied at that age abeg pull her out of that godforsaken school and maybe consider homeschooling her then. Children shouldn't have to worry about the eejit things we had to deal with because our parents were clueless back in our days. undecided

Let the child enjoy childhood and develop at her own pace, not at the pace of others. undecided

Haba....remember that the same teacher hashad experience with pupils in that age bracket and surely knows the developmental expectations at the age. If she's not satisfied with her book growth, she must have good reasons fa.

There is nothing to worry about grin.

Children like yours turn out to be smarter.

My daughter started talking later, My wife still makes fun of me of those days I was worried about her not yet speaking.

Einstein, I read was also a late talker.

Children catch up in thier own pace.

If not for Wife, Parents, I'll prefare my Children start by age 5.

Where are we all running to.

I had double promotion in Primary school by repeated in senior secondary cos I wasn't psychologically matured to begin secondary school.

There is more to learn and grow in life on than school teachings.

Don't put pressure on your baby girl

A three year old that was supposed to be playing, sleeping, coloring and singing.....waiting for 3 or 4pm so that the parent can come and pick her up is whom they organized an extra lesson? ...That's suffocation... they will make that kid to dislike school system if care is not taken...It makes me angry when unnecessary pressure is mounted on kids just so the parent can brag of how genius their kids were....

Extra lessons for a 3 year old, to teach what? It is baffling how the Nigerian system is in a rush to see a 3years old writing when the finger muscles of the child is not yet fully strong enough to properly grip a pencil and the mental strain it causes on some of these young ones.

It is too early to diagnose any learning disorder (if any). Withdraw her from the school and experiment with a structured homeschooling for some time and do the comparison.

Make learning a play activity for her.

No o..
You are missing the point. It wasnt the parent that raised the concern, rather the paret thought the kid was smart until the teacher spoke. Besides, we need to trust the teacher here....if she's concern about her performance, it meant the other kids are able to grasp what she couldn't. No harm in voicing the concern....she might simply be dyslexia or something. I dont know o embarassed

I don't know what being tagged "a slow learner" would do to her mental health. I need her to catch up.

You need to be her home teacher for now and at home to know exactly why she is not picking up

Some kids have their own way of learning, I believe she will still catch up

Promise her ice creams and chocolate or her favourite sweets if she can write 1/5 numbers per week

That sweets will motivate her, even keep the goodies where she can see them but can only have it if she writes well

I got your point... But I want you to raise your hands and do some counting for me... Count 1 to 3....Pause and check what a 3 year old should be performing for a teacher...

The kid might probably find the whole thing exhausting hence refused to do anything... that does not mean she doesn't know anything.... I wish I could lay my eyes on that teacher honestly...

What exactly does the teacher really want from a three year old if not to make her sleep and wait for her mother to pick her up,... we are talking about a three year old hereooo not 8 or 9.... the one wey pain me pass na the extra lesson that was mentioned......

In my opinion, that was unnecessary pressure from the teacher...The experts knows the reasons why they believed that kids should start schooling at the age of 5...And she (the teacher) should be handling grade 5 or 6.... not the age she was handling presently because she got zero knowledge of that particular age bracket..

I think changing that school is the only thing that can keep my mind at rest now. The thought of her being beaten or scolded in a very harsh manner scares me. With the way that teacher was sounding, she was really frustrated.

What She's only 3! Why would anyone call a 3 year old a slow learner? Please don't stress the child. I home school my children for this reason. A child learns through play and has no business with reading and writing until they're around 5 depending on the child. We need to let children be children because the system doesn't care it's just looking for worker ants.

The problem with African people is you think Western education is all there is to life.

Your child will function better in other areas of life that relate to success, talent and purpose, it is your duty to help her find it and guide her through it.

Many young kids in school you call olodo are not actually dumb. These kids just have parents who are unable to help them find their destined purpose.

Keep buying stuff for her, buy and try her out with musical instruments too... Your kid has to function in the right path else she would struggle with life because you failed to do so.

Get those CDs and DVDs that teaches Lettering (A B C.... and Numbering (1 2 3 4.....). Always make her listen and watch them, with time she will enjoy rhyming with them and then starts doing the suggested activities by the instructors. This should do the trick. You can also try YouTube for such educative children videos.

In saner climes, a 3 years old child is just being enrolled in school and Montessori is the first step. In Nigeria, we expect a 3 years old child to start preparing to write Common Entrance Examinations.

Please let the child breathe!!

listen to this advice op, change her school, the teacher is just a frustrated human being, you said it yourself that she can write letter A and number 1. She's doing just fine at her age, maybe the other children in her class are older than her.
