Why Always Lagos And Not Ekiti Or Osun by tollyboy5(m): 9:36am On Apr 21, 2022 |
From preindependence era to this day, Lagos has a rich history of war, slave trade , booming economy and early civilization. Over the years these things has remain the same. The ancestors of Lagos has paid their dues. Now while is it so difficult for other southwest state to replicate the feat? Ondo with natural resources is nothing to write home about, Ogun state close to Lagos is nothing close, Ibadan would have done better if it were closer to Lagos. Now why always Lagos? 3 Likes 1 Share

There was no Lagos State before independence Stop talking ignorantly or foolishly Lagos State was created in 1967 Before that 80% of what is now Lagos State was in the Western Region under the Action Group of Awolowo which laid the foundation for Lagos as the manufacturing hub of Nigeria. That was not done by military governments. Ogun State is the next manufacturing hub in Nigeria . Oyo state has one of the largest GDPs in Nigeria behind only Lagos , Delta and Rivers which latter two are oil producing states The SW is the most prosperous part of Nigeria and that is underpinned by Lagos Ogun and Oyo states That is why we clamour for more federalism 26 Likes 3 Shares |

The northern people are basically ruling or mostly the head in ministries simply because they are the majority... The north can't boost of generating income or having the natural resources the south has. Back to the topic, other south west states can never compete with Lagos a former federal capital territory... The kind of investment in Lagos can be found nowhere in this country. Thr revenue generated in Lagos will pay for some states allocation oo. If other south west state like ondo and ekiti cos they are the least when it comes to revenue generation. They need to make the states better so that investors can invest. All what the leaders do is to pack, pack and keep packing until the next governor would say he met debt of high degree on ground. |

Why always Anambra and not Abia or Enugun? Oyo's economy is bigger than all 5 Eastern states, before adding Ogun. Yoruba people don't care about states, we care about the language you speak, if you are Yoruba you are welcome anywhere in Yoruba land but I know you won't understand because among communities you guys don't marry talkess state to state. 16 Likes |

aribisala0:Not very accurate. Lagos was a seperate colony from the colony of the north and southern Nigeria, it was a separate protectorate. During the regional system it was the capital of Nigeria. Now it's a separate state. My point is that it has never been part of a self governing political entity of the yorubas. 9 Likes |

aribisala0:You're actually the one talking ignorantly and foolishly. I never mentioned Lagos state, what I mentioned was Lagos which existed before independence The British settled down at Lagos isalnd took charge of trading from inner Yoruba cities passing through the present day Lagos Ibadan express way. This territory was under awujale of ijebu kingdom who collected tax from British traders who pass through his kingdom. From ikorodu down to lekki-Epe was was part of the awujale kinddom not until the issues between awujale and British caused the war that made Epe Lagos province. Lagos has always been, your ignorant statement is likened to someone dating Egypt history and existence to their date of independence, when we all know Egypt has been existing for some thousand BCE. Lagos (Lagos island ) was a major business district with many ijebu and awori merchant taking charge of the agricultural and slave trade business. The British were the main force that established the urban-rural migration in the first place. Ibadan was also doing well then but now it's only Lagos. 10 Likes |

tollyboy5:So you were comparing Lagos City with Ekiti state and Osun State Don't be silly The whole thrust of this thread is clearly comparing Lagos State to other states What is he basis for comparing Lagos city minus other parts of the state to Osun or Ekiti state? why? you are only kidding yourself British war made Epe Lagos province Really ? Define Lagos Province Then I will answer that because next you will say you were talking of another thing 7 Likes 1 Share |

Armaggedon:You don't know and do not know that you do not know but think you know. Read carefully before talking What is "LAGOS" Define "Lagos" First I said Lagos State. Lagos State was NEVER a colony . So do not talk ignorantly Lagos state is made up of FIVE DIVISIONS Lagos Ikorodu Ikeja Badagry Epe . Ikorodu , Ikeja Badagry and Epe were part of the Western Region until 1967 when Lagos Sate was created and NAMED after the former FCT The City of Lagos I refer you to a thread I created a while ago to learn about the "Colony of Lagos"https://www.nairaland.com/4144976/lagos-1898before-nigeria-not-oil/4 Lagos Colony was NOT a protectorate rather it was a POSSESION from 1861 This just referred Lagos Island and areas around Ikoyi. subsequently Western Nigeria was added after some wars and the other part of Western Nigerian became a PROTECTORATE of colonial Britain collectively referred to as The Colony and Protectorate of Lagos until 1906 7 Likes |

Re: Why Always Lagos And Not Ekiti Or Osun by tollyboy5(m): 6:15pm On Apr 21, 2022 |
aribisala0:I made it clear in my post that Ibadan will do better if it were closer to Lagos like Ogun state. Ogun state generally is failure with visionless leaders. Despite the proximity it enjoys freely from Lagos the state economy grows like a snail. The areas of Ogun state which are industrial hub has been neglected by visionless leaders who don't care. Go to agbara industrial estate and see lot of closed industries. Even the road to agbara will give you headhace . Go-to sango and see the pitiable condition of the road there. Go-to many areas close to Lagos in Ogun state then you'll know the government are failing Ondo state has natural resources and has nothing to show for it. In southwest here, what we have is just thief parading themselves as leaders. That's why they detest transparency. The only progressing state sofar are Lagos, OYO and osun state. Ogun state and progressing should not be in same sentence. Look at the retrogression from the igr graph 3 Likes

tollyboy5:First you need to make up your mind whether you are talking of Lagos State or Lagos City . There really is no point talking about Lagos City and comparing it to Ogun or Oyo. Makes no sense to me. I think if we shrink the federal government and have elections that work we will be OK in the SW ...................eventually . There will always be some dependence on Lagos state and hopefully some economic spillover |

aribisala0:Yes, Epe was part of ijebu kingdom and later became ijebu province. Later the British defeated awujale and gave more power to the Eko-epes , the kosoko people who are the present day Eko-Epe. There are historical documents on that https://www.nairaland.com/3926600/british-ijebu-war-1892-battle-imagbon |

aribisala0:What I'm saying is from historical document. I'm not taking of when state were created. Base on historical document and how close the egbas ijebus and aworis had been for long the present day Ogun state ought to be better than what she is today. Yeah I agree true federalism will take us to the promise land. But presently Ogun state leaders need to wake up from slumber |

tollyboy5:You are not answering the question I am from Lagos and a historian of Lagos. You used the term "Lagos Province" saying Epe was incorporated into that and I asked what you meant no reply What was the legal status of this "province" When you answer that I will give you the right answer Let us deal with that before digressing into ogun Ahoyaya; another lecture |
Re: Why Always Lagos And Not Ekiti Or Osun by aribisala0(m): 6:44pm On Apr 21, 2022 |
tollyboy5:State creation is important because when people use the word "Lagos" especially historically they are not discussing the same thing so terminology and definitions are important. |
Re: Why Always Lagos And Not Ekiti Or Osun by tollyboy5(m): 7:00pm On Apr 21, 2022 |
aribisala0:What I'm saying is how the British took control of ijebu kingdom. Province or no province might not be right word. The argument here is about when Lagos became hub for trading and exporting kingdom like Remo and Abeokuta were close to Lagos and it's not showing in present day Ogun state. The leaders of the present day Ogun state has failed to utilized the proximity . |

tollyboy5:Okay First the idea of an "Ijebu Kingdom" is a fallacy. There are several and they were never ALL under the Awujale. many were independent kingdoms on their own Leaving that to one side because is not the main issue That is how they took control not just of Epe but the WHOLE of Western Nigeria. The rest of Yoruba land n Nigeria was finally subdued militarily in the 1890s That whole territory became known as The Colony and Protectorate of Lagos ( all the way to Oyo) The Colony of Lagos status in British law was a "Crown Possession established by a treaty in 1861 with the Oba of Lagos. This was legally a different status from a protectorate. It was renamed from Colony of Lagos to Colony and Protectorate of Lagos when the rest of Yoruba land was added and that is why i asked what you meant by Lagos Province. The evidence for his is in the Annual colony reports e.g see https://www.nairaland.com/4144976/lagos-1898before-nigeria-not-oil The Lagos Protectorate was essentially Colony of Lagos citizens had different passports from Protectorate citizens and were treated differently i.e entitled to British passports until Nigeria became a republic in 1963. |
