[Good morning
Please I need your advice,
I want to buy Fidson based on Q4 2021 and Q12022 results.
Should I go ahead?
Is worth it waiting for UAC dividend mark down before selling.
Thanks

Newbie ko! ...that's funny Sir. cheesy cheesy
The person you refered to is even more than an old bird... with verse knowledge of the investment space both locally and intl'lly.

He probably bought the insurance coy you referenced (NEM) @ less than 70k on average. By implication, he already bagged well over 470% ROI, and that, excluding cash flow accruals from YoY dividends.
Even if he hadn't sold any, his div cash return alone would've had a principal coverage of near 2x multiple by now. (He could have doubled up on his initial invested capital thru that means)
Put differently, he'll likely afford to lose all the money he invested therein if the equity peg drops to zero (even if it's in billions) and still be able to contribute to resuscitating NEM insurance should they declare for bankruptcy today. wink cheesy grin

So worry not Sir!
It is well.

Now you people have opened my eyes on Wanij0, you gurus should welcome him back to the forum on behalf of we newbies. I appreciate the good job you gurus do here.

The statement simply means N590 now would have a purchasing power of N360, which is clearly a decrease in power for N590 prior to devaluation. Thus your math is wrong the percentage devaluation is not 39% but 63.89%.

Letting A be the starting rate and B the final rate.

The percentage change of the Quote Currency relative to the Base Currency is

Percent Change = ((A − B) / B) × 100

The percentage change of the Base Currency relative to the Quote Currency is

Percent Change = ((B − A) / A) × 100

A positive change is appreciation and a negative change is depreciation.

Therefore:
Relative to USD, NGN Depreciated 38.98%.

Relative to NGN, USD Appreciated 63.889%.

Let me put it this way:

If 1 USD = 360 NGN yesterday, but today 1 USD = 590 NGN we can say that d value of USD changed from 360 to 590 with respect to Naira.

And that is (590-360)/360=63.8%

Now, from NGN point of view, if 1NGN = (1/360) USD yesterday but today 1NGN=(1/590) USD we can say that the value of NGN changed from (1/360) to (1/590) with respect to USD.

To calculate change as before:
((1/590)-(1/360))/(1/360)=-39%

So, I can say that NGN depreciated by 39% with respect to USD.

What you've left out is the TIME element! Can you wait for the price to move from N2 to N15? How many people have the stamina to wait that long? How many people can withstand the dips that occur during that period without selling in a panic?

Not only time , how many stocks have the capitalization to attract fpis , that’s what the discussion was about , he should do that analysis with the highly capitalized stocks the fpis invest in

United Capital gave a good performance as per share price because the earnings grew from about 50k to about N1.90k within 4 years.

Dividend also grew from 40k to N1.50k in 4 years

The statement simply means N590 now would have a purchasing power of N360, which is clearly a decrease in power for N590 prior to devaluation. Thus your math is wrong the percentage devaluation is not 39% but 63.89%.

Simple example :

You had N360,000 savings in 2016 when exchange rate was $1= N360. You call aboki and ask what the dollar equivalent of your naira savings will be. He says $1,000.

You did not invest this sum. You just kept it in your piggy bank at home.

In 2022, $1= N590, you still had the same savings of N360, 000 tucked away in the piggy bank. You call aboki and ask what the dollar equivalent of your naira savings will be. He says $610.

You have effectively lost $390 [$1000 - $610 = $390] due to devaluation.

In percentage form, that will be the [loss / initial $1,000]* 100%.

39%

Dude was correct!

Thanks bro for explaining to him.

The same way currency moves from $1=35 ruble and jumps to $1= 150 ruble and people say it devalued by [(150 - 35) /35] = 328%

grin grin

A currency cannot devalue 100%. Max one can get is 99.999% (Zimbabwe and Venezuela).

@cornwall, For Naira to have a devaluation loss of 63.88%, it means dollar should be exchanging at N996 if N360 (2016) was the reference.

Not a case of half full nor empty.

Percentage increase or decrease is different from when you do devaluation.

Number can increase over 100% but currency cannot devalue 100%.

99% devaluation of the $-naira (assume 2016 exchange rate of N360 as reference) will bring the value to N36,000 per dollar. We are not in Iran o.

The calculation is very simple.

All that meant was that the devaluation loss of naira (at 39%) is nothing compared to what you will stand to gain in capital gains and dividend income.

Even if you use the big banks as example. Say you bought Zenith at N15 and you sell at N24, this is 60% gain excluding taxes. This 60% beat your naira devaluation if it includes any dividend income.

Once people see exchange rate jump from one number to a higher number they start to panic and think it is the end of the world. All this simply means is that anyone bringing in forex will only bring in little and ego o ju ebenine.
