The loss of Mariupol to Russian 100% control is not only strategic in that it gives Russia a land corridor to Crimea, but also a catastrophic loss to NATO's interest in the country since it ultimately put an end to the long held plan to setup a naval dock center for NATO ships in the Black Sea adjacent to Russia's naval route.

Mariupol gives Russia access to an unobstructed land bridge from the Crimean peninsula it legally annexed from Ukraine in 2014 to the Donbas region in southeastern Ukraine, enabling easier troop mobilization into the Donbas that has become the focus of Russia’s invasion.

Moreover, Mariupol is the largest trading port on the Sea of Azov and the primary export center for goods in southeastern Ukraine, and the city falling would help to effectively cut Ukraine off from access to the sea.

Mariupol will not only extend Russia's naval assets ability to maneuver in the Black Sea, but also gives it wider range of economic and political nautical miles.
