Hello Tech Seniors,

I graduated from the University about a decade ago and I'm currently in my early thirties.

I did not study Computer Science, Engineering, Maths, Physics or other Math-related courses. My mathematical prowess is fair.

I made up my mind to go into Tech because I did an appraisal of my journey since I finished NYSC and realised I would have been very fulfilled if I ventured into Tech since then. The last one year has been terrible for me. I started thinking about Tech since late last year. I recently came across one or two threads where Tech guys gave testimonies and their comments gave me hope that Tech would change my life and my story.

I feel that I would even regret more in the next 10 years if I don't start something in Tech NOW! Tech is both the present and the future.

I have come to a conclusion that one can hardly regret ever going into Tech.

I got to know that there are several fields of Tech one can specialise in. I also got to know that some people started in one field and later dropped it for another field because they realised the first one was not for them.

I also hear that some people are in Tech but their foundation is faulty.

How do I know the aspect of Tech I will enjoy and at the same time excel in? Kindly guide me in every ways you can. I am coming late already and there is no time for me to gamble or do trial an error unlike a 16-year-old Jambite.

The following might be helpful in helping me make a decision:

1. I love to solve problems. In fact, solving problems gives me so much joy. There are times I skip sleep just because I want to find solution to a particular problem.

2. I love it when I am the staff/individual that got it done.

3. I am competitive (healthy competition). I love to look at people that are better than me and try to become as good as or better than them. I always believe that I can do it since they could also do it.

4. I love a career that pays very well even if not the best. As a result of this, I might be tempted to want to switch to a Tech career that has the best prospects and pays the highest. In that case, maybe it'd be advisable I start a career in that aspect I would eventually be tempted to port to.

5. Kindly also say something about Tech careers that thrive in the UK, US or Canada because one might have a cause to relocate in the future.

I look forward to reading from the seasoned and incisive Tech Seniors.

@archekit, also I recommend you take an introductory level CS course like cs50 first from there you dive into either web development, IOS or data science avoid android is a bit overflowed I'll say

Let me give you a very fast track. There's a company Called Microverse(Microverse.org). It's a company based in USA.

They train you for 7 months, then you use 3 months to look for a remote job. You pay them 15% of your income after your start making $1000. Some of their graduates make $30,000 because the stack they use is fullstack Ruby(HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, Ruby and it's framework Ruby and Rails).

They have a one month pre-course, so don't worry if you're a beginner.

The training is on the concept of pair programming, so you'll work with students from all around the world.

If you register now, and get accepted let's say in August, by May next year you're at least a 500k earner.

That's the most practical advice from me, because it's structured, and you're learning with a goal to get a job.


Note: Ruby and rails is a sought after stack in US and Australia, so there's no much competition for developing countries developers.


This advice is just for Software Development.
Other fields of Tech like Product Design, Graphic design, just get a good Udemy course and stick to it for six months while connecting with a community.

All what's I mentioned needs dedication. So if you're intentional, by this time next year, you'd smile.

The truth is the answer is subjective. If I was to advise you I would say front-end probably another person might tell you backend another would tell you mobile apps another would say data science. No one can tell you exactly what field is right for you. You just need to make research, choose the field you want and study intensively to land an entry level role at that field

All tech fields pay well provided you are quite good and all are accorded the same respect. There's none really better than the other. They are all important.

Anybody that tells you they are doing tech only for passion is a big fat liar. Tech is just a tool to solve problem and solving problem brings money. Thank God you like to solve problems, using Tech will help you grow in that while bringing you big bucks.
From research and experience, Web/app development using Javascript and its frameworks has more demand and low entry level to jobs.
If you want to relocate then you need to learn the Java and spring boot stack.
Data science pays more. However entry level is high and you need to learn how to use a lot of tools.
You can also choose the C#/.Net route. There is no much competition there. You can as well relocate with it.
If you choose any of the route, you need to understand how to solve coding problems. Learning data structure and algorithm will help you in that. You need this to ace interviews.

Lol. I get your point. TBH, I know myself. I just need as much info as possible. I don't want to keep changing interest.

Many people say you shouldn't do it because of the money but low key, most of them are doing it for the money. As for me, I truly love solving problems and I can say I am not a bad problem solver. However, the rewards that come with it is a major motivation for me, just like it is for most successful Tech guys.

Many people (like yourself) who are now rushing to Tech are the ones doing it for the money. That's why you are interested in the highest paying most envious positions. Someone mentioned Data Science up there and that's because that's what also drove them, money. He doesn't know that Embedded C programmers or Hardware Driver programmers earn an unbelievable amount. And they aren't the most envied. Many people will tell you to focus on learning the state of the art Programming Languages but COBOL and Fortran programmers earn salaries that a lot of people will be envious of even though people will laugh at you if you say you program in COBOL or FORTRAN. Listen my friend, there is no such thing as the highest paid and most envied role in tech. This isn't medicine where everyone wanted to be a surgeon.
