Apparently it's used by the three major tribes in Nigeria. I believe the Igbo method of processing is the best, as they grind it and wrap it well to prevent the stink. Some of you millennials pretending, continue okay. We all know what's up.
I think d Igbo's is quite different, smooth paste. Same with d Ijebu's; it's ògìrì in Ijebu. The stench is worse sir. I'm sure! grin

If I buy it in the market, do I need to wash it first before putting it into my cooking
Yes. d whole one dt is greyish black in colour, rinse properly &pick out of d water. The dirt will settle, depending on how it was made. the more paste-like one however, u add lil water and mix. Try picking out, then carefully add d water to ur meal while trying to hold back d dirt dt might av settled. Also, u may av to pick out a dew black stuff which are d seed cover of d main ingredient.
The real paste-like one like d Igbos/Ijebus, i guess it's just used straight up like that. Not sure though.

The seasoning cubes/powders we av all over av a deadly ingredient called 'msg'. Pls read up about it.
I personally know thru caring for seniors citizens around me dt high blood pressure patients fare better when msg is eliminated from their food. My aunt's bp will obviously rise in d monitor jst few hrs after consuming anything containing msg. I also remember a family friend who used to sweat on his palms only when he consumed meals containing bouillon cubes.
Remember d times of vedan, ajinomoto,A1,etc., d media&everyone made us all flee cos of this same ingredient. Now msg is back in attractive packaging.
Y I always pity ppl who are fond of eating out or indulging in instant noodles.
Hence, d reason for encouraging ppl to use local/natural condiments, of which iru is one.
Wow! Very enlightening. Thanks a lot. And I'll surely read more about msg.

We Yoruba call it Iru or Eware and in almost all our soup it's a compulsory ingredients. Efo riro, ila or ila alasepo, Ewedu or Ewedu Alasepo, gbegiri, Egusi, Obe isapa and many others. This Iru must be added to bring out the life of the soup.

Do other tribes in Nigeria use this ingredient and what's it called in your dialect?

Nigerians in diaspora, do you get to use Iru in your soups too?

I never took notice or cared how my meals were made growing up but after I became husband I shared in responsibility of household meals and became knowlegeable about cuisine. I was at first skeptical when my wife would buy iru and cook with it. The taste of her meals made me a believer. Iru is an agent, it makes all the difference in a sumptuous dish.

Thanks for this thread!

I prefer the kogi own in normal local jollof rice(not the type Nigeria use to compete with Ghana).

This just reminded me of something. Sorry if this may offend anyone here.
A colleague was microwaving her food and the whole place started smelling like where are rear.
Another colleague just exclaimed "who dey microwave shit" not knowing that was someone's food.

The taste may be great but the smell is horrible.

It makes food smelly. It makes the body smell. It makes the house smell. It’s too strong, especially when used it stews.. like ayamase. More tolerable in Okro but still do not like it in my food.

On a recent trip to Ojodu berger, I perceived the most wonderful iru of my life. Not far from the bustop and market. Had to go back and get it.

Got home cooked the most exotic okro and the house was just perfumed by the beauty. Had to call a friend about it. Looked, smelled and tasted wawu.

Only regret was I couldn't buy more. That was fresh men. A million times better than other condiments.

Of course.... That's a cool alternative

But hope it's Iru Ekiti.... My state is prided for having the best Iru in the whole of SW cry grin.... I stand to be corrected tho

You are correct, even as a bachelor I can't cook without iru.

I love my state iru, clean, neat, big, well prepared and smell nice even you can preserve it with only salt without putting it inside freezer though I prefer fresh one.

I'm telling you, during my undergraduate, I used to prepare iru stew for rice.... I have one Igbo guy then my course mate any day he come to my hostel he will ask me to prepare iru stew so that we can use it to eat rice.

Their is Iru Maggie but not common

Let's enlighten people on our natural ingredients that will reduce their chances of having Diabetes.

I hate this Iru so much, and my aunt likes putting excess in her food cuz she says it's good for the eyes. Most times, i separate it when scooping my soup angry

Kamadorawa bawo? E buru o!

Kriss216 and his/her likes just type or write to chase clout.

People who know the exploits of iru (locust bean) don't joke with it.
I use it for my efo-riro, efo elegunsi, ila, ila alasepo, iresi elepo, gbegiri, ata dindin. You will eat and lick your fingers.
My restaurant is loading. Will invite Kris to the opening. There's no condiment like iru. The taste is unique and you get the best processed iru from my part of Nigeria, Kogi State.

It is very disrespectful to say someone's native food is disgusting. If you don't or cannot eat it, then that is fine. What's with the disrespectful comment? If only ya'll know half the procedures most of your processed food go through before you eat it, your orientation will change.
