Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Presidential Candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has defended his choice of Senator Kashim Shettima as his running mate.

Prior to the unveiling of Shettima, the polity was heated up over single-faith ticket.

While the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) rejected the idea and warned parties against it, some stakeholders asked Nigerians to focus more on competence than sentiment.

Speaking on settling for Shettima as running mate, Tinubu said all his life, decisions regarding the team around and supporting him had always been guided by the principles of competence, innovation, compassion, integrity, fairness, and adherence to excellence.

He said he consulted widely on the issue of running mate and he appreciates the perspectives of leading members of the party, political allies and key national figures “who see Nigeria’s future as I do”.

Tinubu specifically said the belief in prioritising leadership, competence, and the ability to work as a team over other considerations influenced his running mate choice.

“I am mindful of the energetic discourse concerning the possible religion of my running mate. Just and noble people have talked to me about this. Some have counselled that I should select a Christian to please the Christian community. Other have said I should pick a Muslim to appeal to the Muslim community. Clearly, I cannot do both.”

“Both sides of the debate have impressive reason and passionate arguments supporting their position. Both arguments are right in their own way. But neither is right in the way that Nigeria needs at the moment. As president, I hope to govern this nation toward uncommon progress. This will require innovation. It will require steps never before taken. It will also require decisions that are politically difficult and rare.

“If I am to be that type of President, I must begin by being that type of candidate. Let me make the bold and innovative decision not to win political points but to move the nation and our party’s campaign closer to the greatness that we were meant to achieve.

“Here is where politics ends, and true leadership must begin. Today, I announce my selection with pride because I have made it not based on religion or to please one community or the other. I made this choice because I believe this is the man who can help me bring the best governance to all Nigerians, period, regardless of their religious affiliation or considerations of ethnicity or region.”

To those who might feel displeased by his action, Tinubu said, “May I say this to all of you, especially to those who will be disappointed in my selection based on religious considerations. I will not and cannot ignore the religious concerns and ethnic sensitivities of our people. Taking them into due consideration is an important part of good and able governance. But religion, ethnicity and region cannot always and fully determine our path. To forge ahead as a nation toward development and prosperity, we must break free of old binds. We must recalibrate our political calculations to where competence and fairness matter more than reductive demographics.”

North lobo wa.

Muslim VP is only what can delivered the votes. Shettima will share the NE votes with Atiku, as long as Buhari and CPC are keeping to their promises, NW should be secured, NC have been SW friends for quite some time, we are counting on them.
The machineries in SS should be able to deliver 30%, 25% is enough in SE, whatever it takes.
SW, don't go there, na backyard

Is the lawd not wonderful? Shouldn't the oppositions be happy for the Muslim Muslim ticket when they are so sure it can't work, but what we have been seeing is gnashing of teeth, non stop purging since Tinubu confirmed Shettima as his VP

Only people that are not serious with their lives will read that nonsense post up there.

No reason can be justified for picking a Muslim Muslim ticket in a multi religious nation. Tinubu is already a failure even before the election.

In the chase to save Nigeria APC is heading to destroy it.

Every good Muslim should condemn it as I would have condemned Christian tickets.

Millions of Christians will vote for Tinubu.

Hundreds of thousands of Igbo Christians like me will vote for Tinubu...

Because it is far better to vote for a Muslim candidate like Tinubu than to vote for a pagan Catholic like Peter Obi that worships Mary's statue.

No real Christian will vote for a Catholic idol worshipper undecided

Those crying about Tinubu’s choice are just hypocrites. They know it would be difficult for APC to win with a Northern Christian as Tinubu’s running mate.

Be deceiving ya self. Are there no competetent Christians in the North?

Your desperation for Aso rock is the reason for your Muslim Muslim ticket not competency, justice nor fairness. Also banking on rigging to win 2023 election.

A muslim-muslim ticket under current polarised, general insecurity, kidnapping and unabated terrorist attacks on Nigerians most especially churches is nothing short of evil that APC has shown to represent. The current administration has often shown its disdain to popular opinion of Nigerians who wants fairness, justice to all regions and religions.

It is a clear message to Christians that their opinion and wellbeing doesn't matter to APC.

And if I may ask what is Tinubu's agenda for Nigeria? This same man pushed for Muslim Muslim ticket in 2015 but Buhari turned him down. Why is he so keen on this same religion having both president and vp positions.

Aside religion is he competent, healthy and without corruption baggage? Nigerians need to take back the country from corrupt entities with 'emi lokan' sense of entitlement cos they are popular and have cronies in every arm of government.

It should be 'Nigerian masses lokan(turn)' masses who has always bear the brunt of misrule and corruption of the elites and politicians. Every sensible Nigerian should know APC and PDP have got nothing to offer aside their usual ineptitude, failed promises and corruption.

What can Nigerian Christians do about having a Muslim president and vice president: Nothing. Their leaders will just make noise for some months about it and they'll go back to their tithe and offering business.

Some Christian leaders and prophets endorse the ticket soon and say it is the will of their God just to get money from Tinubu.
Re: Why I Didn’t Choose A Christian Running Mate – Tinubu by Built2last: 6:44pm On Jul 10, 2022
By chosing to run a Muslim-Muslim ticket in a country like Nigeria and at a time such as now, the one clear message the APC is sending to the Christian Community in Nigeria is; DO YOUR WORST! YOU DON'T COUNT!

Beyond this insult, the most imb£cilic set of idjiots are the people who, in a bid to protect their own intestinal interest, argue that a Muslim-Muslim ticket in a highly volatile multi-religious Nigeria, , doesn't matter as long as they are competent (As if there are no competent Christians in the North). If it doesn't matter, why did some people give that as a condition for supporting Tinubu who himself is a Muslim? This is the fuulish justification we were given when Buhari was filling all sensitive positions with only people from a particular region and religion. Today, how far?

And because for some of our Daddy G.O and Men of God, the bl00d of money appears ticker than the bl00d of Christ, this insult might be left unresponded to. Some of them may even find a way to justify this even if it means standing the Bible on its head like Pastor Poju did when he turned the definition of faith upside down in a desperate bid to disguise his support for Tinubu. Pa Adeboye will deliberately play the 'see no evil and hear no evil' card. Bakare will most definitely find a way to defend this as a way of paying back his debt to Tinubu. No surprise in his own case.

But I trust the irrepressible Bishops David Oyedepo and David Ibiyeomie. Those two have never been found wanting when it comes to defending the interests of their flock.

As for CAN, I want to believe they are preparing a ROBUST counter measure beyond mere rhetorics.

The question is does your own Islam not appeal to the Muslim community?

If you are a fake muslim it's not a VP spot that would still convince Muslims when they have president spot in atiku kwanwaso
