Since most politicians are also nothing to write home about, they should also be placed on a salary of 300,000 NGN per month too.

We also want to know the career politicians among the bastards we have currently.

Back in my day intelligent students threatened lecturers to face panels over wrongdoings. Dull students accepted whatever mark was given. I have no idea how state and federal schools work, however I disagree with OP because many of our lecturers came from those institutions. I believe things operated the same way there. Nairaland is full of backbenchers, your hive mind will support OP in his narrow-mindedness.

OP is wrong in every sense of the word wrong...we have very sound professors around. Your perspective also relate to the school you attended. You can boldly say this when you pass through schools where most of your lecturers are misters.

I could recollect during my first year in Uni Ibadan, I did a particular course (chem157) where 7 lecturers taught me. 6 of them are professors and only one PhD(Senior Lecturer). Among the 6 profs, 2 of them taught the then VC as an undergrad. These were well motivated, well connected group who participated in conventions and workshops world over. They were serial writers with vast knowledge. A lot must have changed now. Mind you, had our fair share of strikes back then that kept me wondering why they clamour for more money always. They are not the type described by the OP. So pls, stop the sweeping generalisation.

You don’t know anything. As in, shi shi. I am talking as a lecturer in a Nigerian university. You can find another reason but this would not fly. I studied in the UK too. So that Harvard nonsense is funny.

Let me tell you something. Since I started teaching, I have never failed a carryover student. 35% of my colleagues do this. For all 100 level and 200 level exams, I have never added anything less than 7 marks as bonus to their exam score. 85% of my colleagues do this. Sometimes I add 15 marks across.

Even we sef, we hate those among us who derive pleasure from failing students. We dey call them principality and powers. What is more, when failure rate is too high in your course, we would have a meeting on ;Dit at the departmental level. Then we will take it to the faculty level. In some occasions exam officers will reject results until you go and add 10 marks bonus for everyone. Again if you prove stubborn you will be invited to the senate committee to explain yourself and they can even request to see the raw scores and scripts.

When we notice that a colleague likes failing students we will find a way to ostracize him/her. We will not be involving them in projects and events because these people are also mean to us their colleagues. We will act friendly in front of the students but in closed doors especially during meetings we’re giving them the side eye.

However what I will admit that lecturers do is that they don’t like it when students pass too much. For example, when the number of first class students are too many. Why? Remember I said that from 100 level we are used to adding bonus marks across? That means there are very many straight A students that are actually supposed to be straight B students. We compute with excel spreadsheet. Put +10 on a cell and copy down for everybody. Someone with 65 will jump into 75. From 300 level we deliberately start setting difficult questions so that those ones who jumped into many A’s can move into a more realistic grade. I am not saying it is wrong or right but I want you to know how things are done?

With regards to that Harvard university thing, listen to me you this 70 years old man, that is just a figment of your imagination after pumping it with Oshogbo weed.

Let me tell you why this is happening. It’s common sense. Not everyone really wants to go to school. Some people are going to university just because their parents want them to do so or because they’re seeing people going to school. A student is only as bright as the foundation he received and orientation from home. It’s like expecting your nursery school teacher to teach your child how to stop bed wetting. It is clear to those of us in academia those students who are really interested in this boring book stuff. They go at great lengths to understand what we teach even outside of materials we give them.

None of my lecturers deserve that amount and none would brag about their students' failure.

It's only a student that finds a short-cut, absent from classes etc that fails.

You failed all your lecturers courses and you term them bad. Even, the most difficult lecturer, good students find a way out and study harder

In civilized countries, the rate at which your students pass out and graduate is testament to how great and efficient you are as a lecturer and so a professor in harvard would say I AM A GREAT LECTURER BECAUSE ALL MY STUDENTS PASSED AND GRADUATED.

This is the bragging rights of any professor in civilized countries.

Meanwhile this failure of a professor in Nigeria bragging right is how many students fail his class and drop out of the department and get kicked out of the university. This is the bragging right of this failure who is too brain dead to understand that if most of your students are failing and being kicked out of the university it is a testament of how bad of a lecturer you are.

I hereby henceforth submit that all Nigerian lecturers should be put on a salary of 200 thousand a month because that is what they deserve. They dont deserve more than that until they can make sure that all their students graduate and know what they are doing after they graduate.

Rubbish.

So what about students who failed to graduate due to their own lack of seriousness?

You expect a man or woman to give free marks to someone who doesn't deserve it or who hasn't worked hard enough for it?

Perhaps, you may not know it, but these lecturers work hard enough, and the reason they may not be like their counterparts abroad is that they are not as well-paid.

By god you're generous.

Those pompously idle sons of bitches don't deserve N150k monthly for the nonsense they make students go through.

They subjectively decide one's fate, they forcibly sell "handouts" they copy-pasted from someone else's work, they come and go to classes as they damn well pleased, they lord it over students and need their egos massaged, they harass females endlessly, and fail and pass who they will unchecked.

They don't conduct any real research nor contribute to the knowledge base or enrich humanity in any way.

All they care about is their titles, how they're addressed, their pay (earned and unearned), and their opinion on everything.

To hell with those lecherous, lethargic, verbose, bombastic crooks parading as lecturers and professors.

It's only in Nigeria that you need to be at least a geriatric before you become a professor.

All the Nigerian-bred profs are at least 68 years and above, verging on being decrepit ancients.

thats not who we are addressing here. we are addressing the many lives destroyed because A is for me, B is for god, and only 20 of you can get C and the rest of you must fail my class because my testament to how great my class is is that not many can pass it. this is the mindset we are discussing, not stupid students who deserve to fail. we are discussing broken lives because of lecturers egos. some lecturers actually believe that the more students pass their courses that means their course is useless and the more students who fail that means their course is solid and world class. warped thinking but its out there

How many of them are unserious? As a lecturer you cant tell me that you have a 60%- 80% fail rate and tell me you know what you are doing. Are you sauing all students dont qualify for admission to the university?

Professors are the top of the salary scale. So minimum pay should be for the fresh entry level lecturer.

Lecturer 1 or whatever they call them

Truth is Nigerian educational system never upgrades

Look at the Nigerian hostel some countries they would put dead bodies in there.

if university professors even politicians then they too should go into politics. There is no law banning lecturers from participating in politics.
Our economy would have been good if these so called lecturers actually know what they are doing. How can Nigeria have ‘PROFESSORS’ in almost all fields but have never solved The simple problems facing us. All of them na wash and don’t deserve an inch of what those in developed countries get

Don't make it look like Nigerian lecturers don't give students A in your department, when they put in efforts deserving of it.

Don't make it look like all students or you did well enough to warrant A's or B's yet you were denied because lecturer hates you all.

If a lecturer marks you down, follow the guideline, call relevant attention and get rewarded with money and meritocracy.

Don't come here to kvetch spitefully about your lecturers while you actually run around them in reality begging for marks because you failed to work hard enough to attain exam success.

Some of these lecturers left their lecturing jobs overseas to come contribute back home, while are lot are being fetched off for your country's ineptitude.

If it irks you so much, go through all it takes to become a lecturer, get employed as one in a federal school, and start dishing 'A's' and 'B's' for every Shade and Emeka, for the virtue of simply being a student. As if it's not the same 'worthy education, institution, and lecturer relationship' standard that births and drives first and second countries development dynamism.

Gobbledygook!

Probably a plebeian who knows nothing abouth shaping lives and what core academic successes are for failure of trying, and finding his/her tutors to dump the responsibility of the failure on.

Last year, before the strike, a lecturer in my school, Unilorin, motioned that if your pleasure contrasts the result of an exam, go to your LA, then your HOD, who then string your meeting with the exam lecturer, they unravel your script, in line with the marking scheme he used for other students that offered the said exam. Still uncomfortable? It gets to the senates level, then the script to another public university's lecturer for remarking or evaluation of the mark. If found the lecturer actually marks you down at this point, you'll be rewarded, financially too, and the lecturer gets punished. Little did you know you usually have rights as much as they, too, do.

Well, I don't really know your experience enough to assume your perspective.

This is because in my school, in my department and arm of the school, they lecturers are cordial enough.
Professor Olatunji tells us "look, I'm being paid to teach you, so you don't need to even clap for me after lecturer." "I know this course is burdensome enough for you guys, yet the time is ethereal - I lecture you for 2 hours on a topic, you have at least 60 more other topics to share with other lecturers, and to prepare for. Yet you must answer questions on them all in <2 hours - in light of this, I mark your scripts in a position of a student, if I do in a position of a professor, chances are you all will fail".
Dr AbduRaheem: We all call her Mama, you can imagine the degree of cordiality she radiates. In fact, she can do no wrong.
Prof. Enaibe uses his funny, ingenious Segun and Shade model to lecture us on fertilization/infertility. Sometimes, at noon/evening, in class, he wiggles or jokes to capture our attention if he has to - he believes we may be tired.
And so on.

The only thing I notice is they don't cut back integrity. You are unlikely to get an unwarranted mark. Someone was dropped off for scoring 49.2 when he needed 50, despite his connection. A female lecturer cried for a guy who was caught with jottings during exam because he would be rusticated. These are because they're the standards that must be followed.

Also, most of these people have, at a point, been to overseas, for research, experience, and not just some half-baked as you're quick to label.
if our lecturers are good you will see it in graduates they produce. Nigeria is so backwards because university lecturers have failed. We cannot solve simple problems facing our nation yet we have professors and graduates in these fields. That’s a pointer that they don’t know what they are doing.
