England plays 3 at the back because of Maguire. The only reason any manager plays 3 at the back is because he doesn’t fully trust any of his centre-halves so there’s always an extra man covering for mediocrity.

Man Utd play 4 at the back but the biggest problem is the depth of the team. Maguire suits a team that wants to counter attack. Sit deep(leave zero space behind), soak pressure and spring an attack as fast as possible the moment the opponent loses the ball.

However, because Ole and ETH want to play ‘modern’ football, they play a high line that leaves real estate between the last defender and a goalkeeper that doesn’t play as a sweeper. Maguire doesn’t have the pace to recover and De Gea rarely leaves his line.
