I feel the difference between the current annexation and that of crimea are:
1. Crimeans themselves welcomed Putin (unlike this current invasion which he was given the middle finger). Hence he keeps bombing the so called annexed region.

2. Europe cowered because of stoppage of Russian gas during the annexation of Crimea. Obama and Later on Trump realised this and started advising Europe to get off Russian gas. But this time around that Putin came back for more land, EU gave him the middle finger too.
