The Ukrainian military delivered five rocket strikes against the Kakhovka hydropower plant (HPP) in the Kherson Region, Head of the Novaya Kakhovka administrative district Vladimir Leontyev said in a live broadcast on the Soloviev Live TV Channel on Thursday.

"Today five rocket attacks have been carried out, targeting the Kakhovka hydropower plant," he said.

The Ukrainian military has attacked the Kakhovka hydropower plant, using all types of munitions, he added. "These are Tochka-U and HIMARS munitions and even HARM precision missiles," he said.

The official noted that "more than 1.7 million cubic meters of water are delivered to Crimea from the Dnieper River every day, the monthly amount being about 51 million cubic meters." According to him, the possible destruction of the Kakhovka HPP would be a major man-made disaster that would affect everyone living downstream the Dnieper.

The Kherson Region’s acting Governor Vladimir Saldo earlier explained that several districts on the right bank of the Dnieper River could be flooded, with flood waters rising about one meter high, should the dam of the Kakhovka hydropower plant be damaged. That is why the regional authorities were doing their utmost to help residents leave the area. He added that the left bank where the larger part of Kherson was situated could not be critically flooded due to its terrain.

Civilian targets that result in mass casualties are a no go zone. You can't bomb an ammonia plant and remain in good world standing. You can't bomb a nuclear reactor that's up and running. You can't detonate a nuclear device on the shores to cause a massive tsunami too.

A total of 519 US military service members committed suicide in 2021 in continuation of the upward trend since 2011, according to a report published by the US Department of Defense on Thursday.

Out of 519 who died by suicide in 2021, 328 were active-duty members, 74 were in reserve, and 117 were in National Guard, according to the report.

"Between 2011 and 2021, there is a gradual increasing trend in suicide rates among Active Component Service members, and no increasing or decreasing trend for the Reserve and National Guard. However, the 2021 suicide rate for the Active Component was lower than 2020," the report said.

The report also noted that between 2011 and 2020, military suicide rates were similar to the US population in most years.
