any ADULT will tell you that this was coming.

no matter who was in the seat , the naira would have fallen because every previous CBN governor was bolstering the naira with our foreign reserves

now our foreign reserves are depleted because the price of oil has fallen, our oil is not in that much demand as before, and our production has been halved

but while our income has fallen, our demand and appetite for importation has remained the same.

what is happening now is that this govt is taking some of the hard decisions that we should have taken when we had seven ears of corn. if this nation had built and completed rice mills 10 years ago , when we had a much better stream of income, we would be in a better place now.

you cannot run an import based economy with no exports and expect to have a strong naira.

How convenient that everything that has gone bad with the apc government was suddenly seen a mile away.

For you guys, no Bleep up that happened is ever your fault.
It is the fault of previous government who handed over a dead economy that had basically stopped growing.

But I'm the one who is a child grin

Please gerrout from this place with your recycled hogwash

My point exactly… we are not there yet to be banning rice importation.

It’s just like telling a sick person not to see a doctor yet and instead wait for his sibling in med school to graduate and treat him.

Our decision makers are not bright

I agree, the issue was not the policy itself, it was the timing of when it was done.

I actually thought the import duties on rice will be reviewed downward to alleviate the current price surge amidst surge in demand.

When you want to fix something that’s not broken, you better make it better.

As it stands, price of rice is never going down but minimum wage will remain the same

Price of rice will go down when the product floods the market.

No. Maybe when Imota and Dangote mill starts production or the govt reduce import duties on rice importation.

https://www.ers.usda.gov/topics/crops/rice/trade/

nice try, until one goes for context

unless you think a country exporting 45% of its rice and importing only a particular blend of rice is on the same scale as a country that imports 95% of its rice and exports nothing

if dollar is N700, and you are importing rice, do you expect the price of rice to rmain low

stop talking about looking devilish - that is the way nigerians talk in the face of inevitable facts

have you not seen the prices of ALL imported items or items that require imported materials go up?

i posted a link to balance of trade, which should explain it

importation without corresponding exports is a vicious cycle - where the value of your currency will continue to drop.

importation is not a business model
Do we import yam n plantains?

just check d price of foodstuffs that isn't imported...

maybe obainojazz can show us the nigeria exported vs imported rice scales - since he is celebrating food insecurity and thinks it is normal to import all your food

Canada spent half a billion dollars importing rice and you think it’s just to have varieties… you are a clown

You are a bigger clown for lying I said we should import all our food.. we already have garri, corn etc and we can improve on our rice production

Look at the screenshot you posted and see a steady decrease in US import… that’s long term planning

You don’t make a decree banning import of rice and since it has been implemented… we are yet to see any change… price keeps getting higher

Rice that’s the cheapest thing in other countries.. what’s your salary and how much is a bag of rice

Simple economics theory says when supply is higher than demand, price will drop. Is that not true?

When supply is less...you as a gov have to try improve on d less commodity b4 embarking on a suicide mission.

I brought in d cement issue to justify or bring to your notice the "maybe" theory.

i made an analogy everyone should understand.

all of these things - the rice mills etal should have been implemented during our bumper years - when we had money and when we could nurture industries

we did not do it then. now we are broke, our naira is under pressure, and we now have no choice. that is the reality.

we are trying to deploy our food security in a lean period, because we have no choice in the matter anymore.

What is the relationship bw creating a better and less expensive supply to your citizen with rice vs dollars rise

we are among d best in commodity exports (crude oil n co) but d most stupid nation on earth in term of imports

I don't think any one here is against export at all but what are we exporting when we can't even address our own supply despite d surplus.

Since d ban...what can u boast of, as a typical Nigerian as being cheap to surplus

U don't wake up to export without having a good amount of such items at your disposal.

Except maybe i wasn't following d convo.

blame to Jonathan one more time after about 7 years.....

Do u plan for export at d east ideal time or gradually put things in place b4 going head to head with "just export"..

or rather ..Do you export at d detriment of your citizen?

what happened to our leather ...groundnut and many more when it comes to export

I see d pics of Joseph dream's interpretation....Can you boldly say we are saving 4 d latter days or suffering from politician insincerity?

Were the gej years years of plenty or not? Is that not what we are told repeatedly? When is the time to nurture fledgling industries? Is it in times of plenty or times of want?

The govt is trying to nuture and grow our rice industry in a time when the country is dead broke, but somehow you think it will be easy?

Better to let the industry die completely so we can import rice like they do in Canada US and UK.

Let us import every damn thing. Infact let us import cement as well.
