UK Licenses 91 Nigerian Doctors In 15 Days by Racoon(m): 4:27am On Oct 28, 2022
The United Kingdom’s General Medical Council has licensed fresh 91 Nigerian-trained doctors. Our correspondent discovered that the accreditation of the 91 doctors occurred over 15 days between October 10 and October 25, 2022.

The total number of Nigerian-trained doctors in the UK now stands at 10,387. There are 5,210 associate specialists, 2,318 doctors in training, 1,837 general practitioners, and 1,273 specialists among the 10,387 doctors.

The accreditation of the 91 doctors came amidst cries by the Nigerian Medical Association against the brain drain bedevilling the health sector. Apart from doctors, other categories of health workers are also migrating.

The PUNCH reports that the statistics also showed that between January 1, 2022, and September 30, 2022, about 1,307 Nigerian-trained doctors were licensed in the UK as Nigeria continues to battle one of the worst situations of brain drain in its history.

However, Nigerian doctors who got medical qualifications in schools outside the country are not included in the data.

The NMA, while lamenting the high rate of medical brain drain, said Nigeria may import doctors in the future. Nigeria currently has the third-highest number of foreign doctors working in the UK after India and Pakistan.

The National President of the Medical and Dental Consultant Association of Nigeria, Dr Victor Makanjuola, while commenting on the situation earlier, said, “In the last two years, over 500 consultants, in my estimation, have left the services of government hospitals for practice abroad.

All our government hospitals are consultant-led practices, which is the global standard. We have lost 500 in just two years, and we have found out that those who are more likely to leave are the younger ones.

“To sustain the system and be able to train the next generation of medical doctors and medical students, Nigeria needs to retain the older consultants who are in their 50s and getting close to retirement so that they can stay back and train the next generation of doctors and medical students.

“Otherwise, the disaster of brain drain would be doubled because we would lose the younger ones and the older ones at about the same time, and you would find a system without consultants. This would affect the standard of care and the quality of care given by hospitals.”

“Very soon, Nigerians will go to government hospitals and won’t see a doctor. The health crisis in Nigeria is unprecedented as the mass exodus hits alarming proportions. Already, it takes a patient two hours to see a doctor on the average; three hours for new patients.

Over 100 doctors have resigned from UCH this year alone; 800 doctors have resigned from Lagos State hospitals over two years, 100 this month alone; Kebbi State has been unable to employ a single doctor in two years despite multiple adverts for employment.

Over 200 doctors and nurses have resigned from Ladoke Akintola Teaching Hospital this year; Nigeria has 80,000 registered doctors. While more than 50,000 are practising abroad, 6. 92 per cent of the doctors in Nigeria are considering finding a job abroad; 7. 70 per cent of Nigerian doctors are making plans to leave for foreign lands and are taking exams to that effect.

236 doctors wrote Primaries for West Africa College of Physicians in 2017 to gain admission to Nigerian Teaching Hospitals, five years ago, over 1,000 wrote the same exams while 660 wrote PLAB to practise in the UK over this Primaries exam. Over 1,000 have registered for the next PLAB. Across the nation, the story is the same. And the scary part is no one seems to be bothered.”

This was the scenario years ago. The situation is really scarier now than ever. Simply because of the failure of the political class to better the lot of this beleaguered country while the downtrodden masses continue to be @ the receiving end of all these shit. Nigeria, it is time to decide right.

Meanwhile, Hear the irresponsible and insensitive government back home;

The President-Maj.General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) Said “Nigerians have suffered so much going abroad for medical treatment. This is not good for us & it must stop because we can’t afford it again"

Even our IT guys are japa-ing.

Most of the banking issues being experienced now is due to the exodus of the bank's IT staff.

If your children are leaving home to watch TV in the neighbourhood, the best way to put an end to that is to buy a TV.

Nigeria is noting but upside down

It is beginning to be the most terrible place for one to practice his/her proffession. The place does not appreciate those using their talents, intellect, high technical skills to better humanity. Instead it insults and humiliate them.

The sciences generally, medical sector, the ICT sector, now our educational sector is under attack or threat of japaing.

Nigeria is a breeding ground for skilled workers exploited abroad. They attended Nigerian schools, benefited from Nigerian University facilities and givernment reduced fees, only to be allowed by the same clueless givernment to take the skills abroad to work in a clime that didn't contribute a dime to those skills. No be mumu givernment be dat?

Indians , Chinese, Saudi and Co would do otherwise...aquire skills abroad to develop their countries back home. Why won't they be the best my people? We'd get it right someday. The crop of politicians we have today should be blamed for all these nonsense. All of them keep running to the west for medical treatment after collapsing Nigeria's health sector yet, their blind followers wouldn't reason along these lines of inequality and cheating. They're the ones patronising those empty hospitals.

Good for the doctors!

It's only a tree that would see you coming to cut it but stay. Those doctors have the right to move to economies that works.

If you're here supporting or trying to reinforce failures, you visa application will be denied!

You can’t blame them for migrating to other countries where their services will be valued, Nigeria government don’t take our educational system and health care seriously otherwise I don’t see any why ASUU go strike for more than 8 months 3 academy session

The brain drain has dipped deeper more than ever on the account of mismanagement of Nigerian health sector by this miserable government so much so that will now have 24,000 doctors to more than 250million population.
