Clarity Regarding Nigerians Born Abroad And Nigerians Born In Nigeria. by Nobody: 10:09pm On Oct 27, 2022 |
Why does it seems like Nigerians born abroad tend to look down on Nigerians born in Nigeria? I've noticed this mostly with some YouTubers on YouTube and it got me curious. So, I was wondering if I could get more clarity from you guys. Is it just me, or Nigerians born abroad look down on Nigerians born in Nigeria? 4 Likes 2 Shares |

But that doesn't mean that one must look down on his people back home. Remember being born abroad does not mean you should denounce where you from. Vision101: 3 Likes |

It's not everyone, but it exists. Those who feel that way, have colonial mentality. Samantha123: 3 Likes |

Samantha123: Wouldn’t you be ashamed When you get harassed at the airport because you have 2 luggages. Get stopped by police and have your phones searched because you look like a suspect. Get told that you have to pay police 200,000 because you mistakenly attempted to pass a BRT lane. Get pulled over wearing shades while driving cuz you've young and black. 3 Likes |

Samantha123: Nah …. It isn’t . I blame my parents .. my father’s land is what the anthem says. It is why people are planing to leave or have left . Samantha, not sure where you are but if you are able to visit and live in places like Florida or California etc you wonder kilode with Lagos and kidnappings , roads , infrastructure. Mindset at times . You can give someone appointments and can’t keep basic appointment because you could be stopped on the road passing through 6 check points because you have a back pack. ( this was something my cousin and I experienced that we had to pay a police officer just to escort us ) , traffic which no get head or tail . To everyone their own sha. 2 Likes |

But that doesn't mean when you're born abroad you must look down on your people back home. I'm sure most Nigerians living in Nigeria wish they could do something to change the situation there. rickleye: 3 Likes |

Samantha123: Maybe I misunderstood. I don’t look down at my peers. Never! If one finds him or herself in such a position one is blessed and opportuned. but rather it appears that people look at those born abroad differently hence the Omo Ajebo or Tokunbo references. And the pressure of send us money or buy me a car or a tablet or this or that makes those snub their noses ( some) and look downward at times. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

But I think they should use their privieges to try and do something positive for their country. Start something that's gonna benefit the community or get involved in politics in order try and make a better Nigeria. The family and their billings would have to wait. rickleye: 1 Like |

Alot of things go on here ma'm those who consider themselves fortunate to be born in the west or SA like you look at nigeria as a shithole. I think its a thing to do with mentality |

But I think another issue is that most Nigerian parents who had their kids abroad hardly or never bring them home in Nigeria for visits. I had a Nigerian friend back in varsity and she claimed that the only time she went to Nigeria was on her father's funeral when she was 10 years old. She doesn't know anything about her Yoruba roots or anything like that, the only languages she's fluent in its English and Sotho because she was born and raised in Lesotho. Samantha123: For the record I appreciate our healthy discussion without personal insults . Only about 0.01% come abroad and make that kind of money . Plus it will surprise you that many would rather invest in a country that gave them that wealth and you can growth the wealth exponentially than somewhere else where the society is unpredictable. Abroad the basic human necessities are provided at a cost here in 9 ja basic necessities don’t even exist. 1 Like 1 Share |

Samantha123: Dear nothings going to change. It’s a pattern. Do you realize that in 1984 we had regular power supply. The dollar was 1-1 Naira Refinery NNPC worked Streets were paved with asphalt Population growth was in check. Nigerian Airways was in air. Roads and highways were lined. There were no touts and Agberos. There were no kidnappers or rapists in abundance. I have been in and out of the country. We lack a maintenance mentality. There is no continuance culture . We do not fix things we migrate . All those edifices built will be harboured by squatters in 10 years. Those who can’t bear are leaving and those of us that can will stay and hope. 3 Likes |

But I think the first big thing that you guys need to solve in Nigeria is the issue of tribalism. If you guys can unite and be one voice, I'm telling you, things will start changing bit by bit.. The changes may not come quickly, but some improvements will start showing. rickleye: 2 Likes |

Samantha123: i think the simple answer, is take it down to two one born and raised in Lagos and born and raised deep in the village. The one born and raised in the village gets looked down upon when he moves into Lagos, shades will be thrown on him until he works hard to be like them, sound, dress and change name to fit the environment etc Its everywhere 4 Likes |
