I Rejected a Higher paying Job for a Lower one !! When I returned home from the UK after my MBA, I had two offers at the same time, viz: Offer 1: ✓ With an IOC as an Operations Excellence Consultant ✓ Contract Position ✓ Good salary ✓ In this role, I was to move from field to field deploying Operations Excellence initiatives and driving Change. Offer 2: ✓ With an Indigenous Oil and Gas Company ✓ Permanent Staff Position ✓ Operations Superintendent ✓ Salary not as high as Offer 1 ✓ Field-based leading the safe production of oil and gas. I was inclined towards accepting Offer 1 because the salary was twice that of Offer 2. In that confused state, I called my mentor for advice. I narrated everything to him. After listening, he asked me some questions: ✓ Is Offer 1 pensionable? ✓ Any Medical benefits, Housing, etc? I told him NO. He said take Offer 2. I was shocked and asked him why. He laughed. Then he said Offer 1 is a contract position, no career progression plan, no medical benefits, no pension, etc. That he just recently retired and that medical is expensive, the extra salary you're seeing, you'll spend it on medicals for yourself and family. Offer 2 gives you stability, it is pensionable, you're still young, you can grow your career from there. Including free medical benefits for yourself and family. He advised against just comparing Offer 1 Salary vs Offer 2 Salary at surface level, that there were other hidden costs I was not seeing. I thanked him, took his advice, declined Offer 1, and accepted Offer 2. There's a reason why it is said that what an elder sees sitting down even if a child climbs a mountain he won't see it. They view life from the prism of experience built over time. Just as he advised, I resumed Offer 2, got promoted in less than a month to Ops Manager with salary increase, and my career growth took off. While for Offer 1, after some years, due to cost cutting, the salary was reduced. The IOC ensured staff learned from the Consultants. Once they were sure that knowledge transfer had happened, the Consultants were let go. Positive Takeaways: 1. Always stand on the shoulders of senior colleagues and mentors. There's nothing happening today that hasn't happened before. 2. Do not just make career decisions based on only salary. This can be misleading. 3. When someone offers superior advice or opinion, take it. Do not allow pride or ego blight your objectivity. After this encounter, I now understand why you see some people dancing around the oil and gas sector on the periphery without their careers effectively kicking off. Today, they're with this E&P on contract, after 2-3 years they move to another E&P on contract, etc. There is no career stability, no growth and fulfillment. When they get to their 50's, they are discriminated against using age and let go. 1 Like 2 Shares |

My friend hired someone with zero experience in their specific industry. They were given a chance because of their positive attitude and ability to learn quickly. They had some transferable skills and the rest could be trained. After the interview it became clear that they work hard. I was hired with zero experience years ago when I started producing TV shows and media content. Some of my friends posted about it on Linkedin and some people didn’t believe it. It is true. The World Cup balls are charged before every game. The balls used at the World Cup in Qatar have a high-tech sensor which needs to be charged. The sensor is powered by a small battery, which Adidas said can last for six hours of active use, or up to 18 days when not. The sensor, which weighs just 14 grams, gives ball-tracking in real-time; with cameras positioned around the pitch helping referees to determine offside and other questionable decisions. Any time the ball is kicked, headed, thrown or even so much as tapped, the system picks it up at 500 frames per second. Data is sent in real time from sensors to a local positioning system (LPS), which involves a setup of network antennas installed around the playing field that take in and store the data for immediate use. When a ball flies out of bounds during the course of play, and a new ball is thrown or kicked in to replace it, KINEXON’s backend system automatically switches to the new ball’s data input without the need for human intervention. |
