Please nairalanders let's make this news go viral, because I watched the video made by this officer that he refused passage of those tankers despite calls from superiors. #JusticeForOwombo 5 Likes 1 Share |

It won't get better... At this point, it will be better to sell Nigeria or split it. |

Untainted007: The problem isn't the smugglers. It's the petrol subsidy That's what fuels the smuggling. Once the subsidy is removed and price deregulated, all smuggling will end ASAP. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

Fact is the NNPC can’t say they’re just becoming aware of this, that is why the Bureau of Statistics exists. The volume of fuel being sent to the North is way beyond their consumption levels. Our subsidized fuel even gets as far as Mali because fulani people exist there! In Niger, the people prefer to buy from black market than their gas stations because the fuel is cheaper! I can’t remember the name of the journalist that went undercover and reported this, but the exposé is in the public domain. Their tenure is about to an end and they’re only just bothering to give reasons for something they are well aware has been going on for eight years! |

The officer who arrested him,.if well investigated, must be a mallam. They're out to destiny this country. He'd just retire and vy for a governorship position in his state after making so much money from smuggling like Atiku. But if you ask them to vote a southerner where the resources are coming from, they'd refuse. Shine your eyes my people. Vote wisely next year. Enough said. 1 Like |

grandstar: Exactly...because there is no way that smuggling is not going to happen when fuel is N173 here and N400 and above in all our neighbours. Even if we built a fence around Nigeria, someone is going to build a tunnel underneath the fence, and smuggle fuel that way. But because we are 'too poor'... |
Re: Customs Detains Owombo Segun John For Exposing Booming Petrol Smuggling Business by Nobody: 9:01pm On Nov 11, 2022 |
Tovard: No, just remove fuel subsidy and deregulate the downstream Prices will shoot up , yes, but smuggling would become unprofitable...and stop. Smuggling happens because we sell fuel here at N173, meanwhile fuel is sold in all our neighbours above N400 per liter. Any enterprising person is going to do the mathematics...and smuggle , and earn a profit...that would enable him to pay off customs, and still carry a lot of money home. |

Eriokanmi: Yes, we should all vote for Obi....but the truth is, the same thing is going to continue under Obi... And it will continue, not because of the mallams...but because petrol costs N178 here, N350 black market...and N400 and above in all our neighbours, including Ghana, where it costs above N600. Even if customs tries to stop it, the geng smuggling fuel will just arm themselves, and shoot their way through. The profits are too tasty to pass up. Note that it isn't just big tankers...small time boys are in this business too. Note that governments have tried everything...close the border, put more guards, remove filling stations from operating close to the border...nothing works. But anytime any government...tells you that subsidy has to go...you guys will scream poverty. The truth is, so long as we keep fuel cheap here, smuggling is going to continue. |

slivertongue: Okay, let us remove subsidy, let the price rise to market price, and by extension let the price differential between here and our neighbours that is fuelling the smuggling...be removed, and let us therefore have an end to smuggling.(and by extension, Dangote and the five other private refinereis have enough profit to run properly). Simple. |

Kobonaire234:It's because we've not had a sensible leader yet. Nothing is impossible. Obi said those who engage in bunkering were government officials...he was right afterall with the mind-boggling discoveries that followed. Were those people in govt sleeping before Obi bursted their bubbles? Put the right people in right places and all the nonsense will stop. |
Re: Customs Detains Owombo Segun John For Exposing Booming Petrol Smuggling Business by Nobody: 9:11pm On Nov 11, 2022 |
Franking: Yes, because we keep a subsidy that fuels the corruption. Buhari himself brought it upon himself by opposing GEJ's fuel subsidy removal. But then again, most of you Nigerians too are opposed to subsidy removal. Meanwhile, the price differential between our petrol and petrol outside the country is what is making smuggling happens. Like in science...osmosis....area of high concentration to area of low concentration. |
Re: Customs Detains Owombo Segun John For Exposing Booming Petrol Smuggling Business by Nobody: 9:12pm On Nov 11, 2022 |
Eriokanmi: So, let us remove fuel subsidy, allow the market set the price, and once the price goes up, there would be no significant difference between us and our neighbours in fuel price, and no incentive to smuggle. Do you agree? Be honest. (Because failure to remove subsidy for decades is why we have this issue...and it has been there for years). The smuggling is not caused by failure to put right people in government...it is caused by the fact that fuel cost N170 here, and N400 in our neighbours....a difference that has been there for years (in 2015, it was N87 here and N115 elsewhere.). A lot of wise people...from the big to the small...did da math. |
