Six Things That Happened In Six Months Which Led To The Biafran War by gidgiddy: 2:57pm On Dec 02, 2022 |
The cracks in the foundation of Nigeria started to appear almost as soon the British granted Nigeria independence in 1960. Operation Wetie(1962), marshal declared in the Western Region (1963), the census crises of 1963, the disastrous elections of 1964 and the all round violence of 1965. 1966 was worse, there was a coup, counter-coup, hundreds of officers were killed and a pogrom led to thousands of people being murdered, mainly Igbos
But far much worse was to come the following year in 1967 as Nigeria would descend into a civil war that would clam millions of lives.
Six events would occured in 1967 that led to war
1. January 4th 1967: - The Military Head Of State Of Ghana, General Joe Ankrah, hosts Gowon and Ojukwu at his Hill top Mansion in Aburi, Ghana, to find peace. Gowon and Ojukwu reach a 12 point agreement that effectively turns Nigeria into a confederation of 4 Regions. The agreement came to be known as the "Aburi Accord" . Item Seven of the accord said - "The four Regional structure of Nigeria is not to be changed during the period of military rule without the concurrence of all four military Governors of the four Regions"
2. May 26th 1967: - Gowon breaks the Aburi Accord by promulgating Decree 14 which abolished all 4 Regions, replaced them with 12 brand new states and ended resource control, without concurrence of any military Governor
3. May 27th 1967:- Finding this unacceptable, Ojukwu summons the Eastern Nigeria Consultative Forum, a body comprising all the heads of provinces and Chiefs of the Eastern Region. Ojukwu asks them to advice him on the way foward following Gowon's Decree 14
4. May 29th 1967 :- After debating for two days and voting on the issue, the forum advices Ojukwu, via a public communique, that since Gowon chose to violate the Aburi Accord, Ojukwu should declare the Eastern Region a separate country at the "earliest practical date". The head of the Yenagoa province, an Ijaw man called Frank Opigo, suggests the name "Biafra" as the name of the new country
5. 30th May 1967 : - Ojukwu declares the Eastern Region a new country to be known as the "Republic Of Biafra". Wild joy envelops the Eastern Region, Ojukwu is sworn in as the new country's President
6. 6th June 1967 :- Gowon declares "Police Action" against the breakaway Eastern Region, now known as Biafra.
On 5th July 1967, the Nigerian Army fires shells at Gakem, a Biafran border town in present day cross River State. Biafran troops there dig in and return fire. The war begins 2 Likes 1 Share |

Same Gowon would later discover that the Sultanate of Sokoto pushing him with Northern agenda were actually pro-Danfodio Islamic Fronts of Fulanis invasion of the country. He was Used and Dumped. Humiliated by Fulanis agenda through Murtala coup of 1976 that Ousted him from power. Since that 1976, the Christian North started their own humiliation and persecution from same Fulanis they fought ti defend till date. Whenever the non Muslims Northern tried to get some freedom, it backfired. Dimkat coup 1977. Orka coup 1990, Vatsa coup 1989, and the rest were all middle belt revolt against the Hausafulanikanuri Muslims oppression on the rest of the country. BuhariAPC is the new face of the Danfodian Islamic Fronts till date. Peter Obi is viewed by the Supremacists as the face of a new THREAT 5 Likes |

When Igbo people make up posts about what led to the civil war, they always, avoid the details of the January 1966 Igbo coup.
They fail to mention that the real cause of the war happened on that January morning, when Igbo soldiers of Eastern and Midwestern extraction went about a well planned action of killing all the political and military leaders of northern extraction in one single night. Yoruba political and military officers were also not spared.
They did this without touching a single Igbo politician or military leader.
⏩Ahmadu Bello North Premier (N200 note) ⏩Tafawa Balewa Prime Minister(N5 note) ⏩Akintola Western Region Premier ⏩Brig Maimalari (Top ranking North military man)
And dozens of other Northerners were killed by Igbo soldiers and Igbo expect that the north will just keep quiet.
If the 1966 coup didn't happen, no Civil war would have occurred.
Without provocation,You go to a neighboring village and kill all their Chiefs and they later come on a revenge mission and kill all your men and children and you you are now complaining to the whole world that your children and men were killed without mentioning that it was your own people who started the conflict. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Let me try to locate that document source by searching for these words. A name stood out as one of the key planners of the 1966 coup.. Major Adewale Ademoyega. That is definitely not an Igbo soldier. What's more, if you shine more light on the coup details, Major Kaduna Nzeogwu was Igbo only by ancestry. He lived and identified himself as a Northerner. What's more? Who foiled the coup attempts? Ironsi, Ojukwu, Nwawo, Madiebo, Keshi and co., All Igbo Officers. Their reward? The first victims of the coup that brought Gowon into power were Lieutenant Colonel Gabriel Okonweze, the Garrison Commander, Major John Obienu, all Igbos. As well as the countless Igbo soldiers and civilians massacred all around the country henceforth. |
