In 2v1 situation the best option is to backtrack while maintaining a body angle that will enable the marker cut-off the passing lane, charging up the player with the ball in such situation is risky because a simple pass or dribble will eliminate the marker completely.

The odds are against him. Yes. But the action he took raised it from maybe 80/20 to 95/5.

What I’ve been saying since is that he should bait Foden so that he can be forced to overthink and make a mistake, and at the same time track Kane so that Foden will be forced to delay the pass and Kane himself gets into an offside position.

Now, this doesn’t mean the odds still won’t be against him. It only means that they’ll have it a little bit more difficult to score. And frankly he’d have done his best to prevent a goal.

Jumping in to mark Foden increased the odds of a goal.
