leofab: Thanks for your response. The plant is to fetch us some revenue whist waiting for the coconuts. Another purpose of the plantains in the farm is to provide shades to the young coconut trees. Even the villagers where my farm is located, makes jest of me for taking this part, they believe it will take time. I am not disturbed because I see it as a long time investment. Some people do fix money for a long time too na! 5 Likes |

umuna: I have actually be very interested in Coconut farms. I understand there are dwarf coconuts with only three years gestation period and a plat can bear about 160 fruits a year. Please I need more information about the latest breeds with similar or better features than the above. I once contacted a farm in Ibadan but not sure I still have their contact. Please share your experience and valuable pieces of information. 2 Likes |

middlebelter: I have seen dwarf of 2 years but it is not possible for you to get 160 fruits in a year. But one thing I know of, as the tree matures with good care, it's fruiting might increase. For example, my practice tree in my compound started fruiting 3 and half years. During it's first year, it gave 3 coconuts only. 2nd year we got 16. The 3rd year we got 36 coconus. This year agot 45 coconuts. Buttom line: as they age, it brings more fruits and you have to fertilize and apply manure. 2 Likes |

Re: My Coconut Farm Experience by AreaFada2: 3:08am On Dec 29, 2022 |
umuna:Wow! This is great. How can you be sure that it is actually dwarf coconut when buying from a nursery? Where in Ogun is the dwarf breed supplier friend of yours? How many acres of land have you planted the 250 trees on? What is the risk of bush fire in that area? We planted some coconut trees around the house in the 1990s. Within 15 to 20 years they grew too tall and had to be cut down. Risk of falling over to damage the house or fence. They were supposed to be dwarf but grew very fast. The fruits were bountiful though and was a shame having to chop them down. Have you considered a coconut co-operative? Have you also considered oil palm? Thanks. 1 Like |

umuna: Good one Op. May your Labour not be in vain. Please I have one solitary Coconut Tree in my compound. Planted 15-05-2019. Started flowering last year November (2021). The Flowering was okay (Seven Clutches in all) but the small Coconuts hanging on the bunches ALL fell off save only 4. I thought may be it was still a young Tree This year now, seven Flower Clutches have emerged and the same thing is happening. What could be the cause? And what can I do? I am not around now, I will get you pictures of what I am trying to say in a while. |

Re: My Coconut Farm Experience by umuna(m): 9:06am On Dec 29, 2022 |
Lukuluku69:Good morning Dear, I perfectly understand what you are saying. It is not that it a young tree parsay, due to lack of nutrients and water to carry the load. So the tree had to shed fruits to take what it can carry. I did experienced this too. I travelled home in September this year, I observed that, the local folks that have coconuts usually tied ropes and red clothes to stop this shedding of fruits (their beliefs) and to them, they said it works. How to solve this problem is by digging a ring round the coconut, measuring 1 and the 1/2 feet's away from the tree. Apply 250grs of edible salt(#100) in a ring form, apply enough manure(either dried cow dung or chicken waste); water it very well . You can be doing this twice in a year and observe the effects. Also, most coconuts fruit in dry season and requires alot of water. This might sound funny,if you have rusted zincs/irons put them by the base of the coconut and water. That is the reason most coconut farms are sited close to the sea, river or marshy areas for maximum productivity Alternatively if you have money, you can buy fertilizer with 15-15-15 mark and apply 20gr in a ring form (first 3month) 2 Likes 1 Share

43Ronin: Yes I know. That is the reason I went for dwarf and hybrid seedlings which can start fruiting within 3-4years max. Also people in oil palm plantation also waits. The idea is long term investment! 1 Like |

umuna: Good Morning Sir! You an Angel sent to me! What you said is absolutely correct. It kind of funny! I never watered/water it aside the Rains! Can you imagine! My thinking is that it roots are deep in the ground so it can source for water by itself! Lol I actually told the neighbor who gave me the Coconut I planted and she told me to tie a Rope around it and that that was what her mother told her to do. You need to see her Coconut Tree with hanging Coconuts bunches/clutches! But she told me when water it a lot. Though I never believe in the rope tying stuff but I think the watering works. I know there must be a scientific reason for the shedding and your explanation just nailed it. I got salt plenty for house and I am a chicken farmer too (Low Scale) so I can readily get manure. I will apply as soon as I get home for the weekends. Many Thanks Sir! |

AreaFada2: Thanks for visiting my thread and your interest. I know his house and the seedlings came from the coconut trees in his compound. Also you can know through the shape of the dried fruit. Some hybrid seedlings have big seeds. But for a newbie, I will advise you buy from different nurseries so that, he/she won't be a victim of wrong seedlings. Planted them on 3 acres with spacing of 5.5m. the threat from bush fires are always high during the dry season. One need to work with his farm neighbors to reduce it's occurance. Coconut trees rarely collapses on building, because if they do, all the coconuts on sea shores(Badagry) would have all be gone now with turrent of winds lashing at them from the sea. I have written to them in Ogun State and I got a response. I am trying to get my acts right first. Yes I have considered oil palm. Super gene interests me most. Planning of adding some to a section of my farm. Thanks 1 Like |

umuna: I once worked in that Badagry-Seme axis as a Banker, there was this guy who always come in to withdraw huge sum of money or make Transfers. I asked him what business is he into and he told me he buys Coconut along that Corridor ( Badagry/Cotonu/Lome/Ghana) and send them to Kano. Truckloads and Trailers kind of shipments. 1 Like |
