Interesting, I was watching the TV series “Expanse” yesterday and they routinely used space stations/torpedoes to hit asteroids/meteors to alter their course.

Science fiction may be the way of the future and humans may eventually be able to settle in other planets / space - perhaps 100s of years from now.

100 years too close, until we somehow defeat the speed of light we are going no where.

How were those asteroids deflected, say 500 years ago? Or is this the first time an asteroid is heading toward earth?

Couple of months ago earth had a close shave with an asteroid. beautiful things are happening in space all the time and it's sad we miss out on them...

This things has been in existence years before humans came up and for me, I think these astroids are deflected naturally. only just a tiny bit finds it's way into the Earths atmosphere towards the north pole.

Deflecting two astroids and causing them to smash each other can spread tiny pieces down the earth which could even be More dangerous to human.

You are wrong. Earth is being hit daily by meteor which are small and cannot cause damage. If you leave in area were there is no much artificial light and there is clear skies, you see them as shooting stars. With a good telescope you will see them fly across the sky constantly at night. Asteroids on the other hand are massive and if by chance they part of travel is in collision course with earth, then we will be in danger. One of the reasons we are relatively safe is jupiter, its a huge planet with massive gravitational attractions so it somehow shield us but we are not completely safe. Earth has been hit in the pass even sometime ago I think either 2000s one flew too close and brake up due to friction with earth atmosphere fell Russia, it was small piece from the main asteroid but it cause some damage. Imagine fire raining down from heaven. There are some heading for but their arrival time is still far into the few. Also this one was not heading towards earth it was just chosen for test purposes, it was hit millions of miles away from earth so no way the debris can get close to earth.

What have scientists done to nature to make the earth a better or safer place for humans to live? They blasted this rock and altered its orbit ... how does that make us safer? There is now a plume of debris ... kilometers long .... if the rock was a possible danger ... what about the debris? ... is this not a new danger? Successfully altered the course/speed of an asteroid .... now they have the blue print... what can be up for targeting?..... the moon?... after all ... that can be seen as an imminent danger to mankind should it be hit by a huge asteroid ... thrown out if orbit and sacked into earth's orbit and gravitational pull. You ended up repeating what I said!

The summary of what I said was that striking these astroids/colliding two smaller ones could pose more danger to the earth than what these scientist made us to believe. My reason is, even though the original mass of the astroids isn't heading towards/close to the earth, the pieces out of the strike could be forced to position itself so as to gain entrance into the earth.

When you alter the natural state of a matter in these life, the resulting effects could be dangerous before the actual system tries to return to it natural state again.

How can someone tell us that an astroid as big as California football field will strike the earth in 6 yrs time and they are now practicing how to deflect one using distant smaller astroid?
