But in that case, Rashford was chasing the ball thereby affecting the reaction of the opposition.

This is incorrect. Although you are right that the interference was not from how the last City defender (Akanji) is impacted by Rashford's run because he could not catch up with the ball whether Rashford was there or not.

The actual interference is that the Goalkeeper's decision is influenced by Rashford still being in control of the ball up to the edge of the box even without touching the ball. Ederson's positioning indicates he was setting up himself on how to deal with Rashford's expected shot since the offside flag was not raised. He was not focused on Bruno at all which is why when Bruno took the shot Ederson did not react.

The summary is that if Rashford was not there and a through ball was made directly to Bruno in that situation, then Ederson's reaction would definitely have been different as it will be solely on stopping Bruno. That is clearly interference.

Note that I did not want City to win because of Arsenal, so this is me being totally objective. But I have to admit that United were lucky with the decision. And Referee pundit Gallagher basically reechoed this position under the principle of subjectivity which VAR has no factual basis to challenge.
