Sometime in August last year, my friend’s fiancée was beaten and raped by her boss. She walked in on him freaking the cleaner in his office and after the act with the cleaner he sent for her to come up and did what most cowards thinking with their third leg do; forcefully had his way with her. This was almost at the close of work so he went on to give her money 5k for medication plus the first threats. Young lady told my friend as she got home and got him arrested same evening by the Police in Enugu. There he admitted verbally and was apologizing until he was bailed and turned tiger to take back his words that he only beat her for coming to use his bathroom (which is open to all staffs and the only functioning one in the plaza as at time of the event). There was an agreement that if the girl brings an affidavit she will be given NGN600,000 at the police station. My guy kept demanding for justice and he is not bringing in any affidavit. I joined them at the station to ask questions which the IPO and DCO couldn’t provide to actually establish a case before talking about compensation.

Was the scene of crime visited after the complaint? No! Were other staffs interviewed to establish the usage of the restroom by the office? No! Did the IPO collect or tried to view recordings from the CCTV in the office and retrieve the hard disk for further analysis? No! The clothes and tights submitted have they been taken into evidence and sent for analysis? No! When she went to the police clinic for checks and tests what was the report from the doctor who met her, was there evidence of forceful penetration and other signs of rape aside the physical bruises on her? To this last question she was just seen by a doctor and even her samples collected that day were not analyzed neither did they carry out swab on her for DNA and semen. It was when I was asking these questions that they reminded me that she was asked to come the following day after obviously taking her bathe to come to see a doctor. In other words no medical report from the police on the day of incident.

There and then I knew it was going to be a difficult case to prove. As usual IPO was sponsored to go and visit scene of crime 4days after the incident and took gratification from the accused in front of the complainant with the boss threatening to deal with my friend when this is over.

The next scene was at the OC medical’s office. I must thanks the medical director for her blunt address to a rape victim. The summary of her comments is that female staffs take low paying jobs with the hopes of having affairs with their boss and receiving benefits more than what they earn. That from her POV the young lady is having an affair with her boss and this is a case of lover’s jealousy and makeup. That for the fact that the young lady is not a virgin, there is no way they can ascertain if she was raped or not. My friend was expressly told that he failed by allowing his fiancée to continually work in an environment where she could be sexually assaulted and is culpable for negligence and conspiracy! Omo I was shocked to my very genes. So those women working in banks, corporate offices and even some forces who are harassed by their bosses is a fault of the husbands? I lost hope there and this further emboldened the IPO to go and tell the man that there are no evidence to prove rape. My only question to the head of medical was; who was the doctor that examined her on the night she visited and what were his observations? There are no records, in fact as they didn’t pay for tests that day no card was issued and it was assumed they were not coming back. At this point all hope was lost.

My brother took his fiancée and made way to their house to wail in peace and seek redress in native courts. The man was summoned to a community close by his own. He evaded all summons and threatened fire and hell. We neglected and left it for the land to handle. He came up later to admit his crime which my friend have on phone records but is not willing to accept terms such as ; vowing not to ever rape someone again, paying for all expenses incurred in pursuing justice and compensating the young lady for emotional trauma and other pains caused. We left the venue of the talks few days ago and I was informed by my friend who took his dad for eye surgery that the police came to their house early morning looking for him and his father that they are thieves.

All through the talks my friend has maintained his stance for justice and have made it clear they will only accept compensation when the man openly admits to his crime and apologized. This is to avoid been tagged a criminal for blackmails and extortion same thing the police came to say this morning.

May this piece guide those who may be in similar situation to act as I implore those who have good suggestions to drop. We have contacted a lawyer and the outcome was disappointing.

Few hours ago the barrister we employed his services informed us that the case is being handled by the FCIB in the state, the petition states that the young lady and my friend seduced and lured the petition to a shrine with the intention of duping him the sum of 5m.

The IGP gave a directive to all formations and commands of all FCIB/IGP teams to only treat cases brought forward by DPOs. This is to avoid instances where persons who were granted bail will go and institute cases against their complainants because they weren’t favored in the case. The IPO where the first case was reported is not on the know of what is going on. As usual it’s an order from above.

@OP, Contact NGOs and Rights groups in the state through the ministry of women affairs or get someone in the gender unit of NSCDC or even the police. These organisations have active gender desks in at least one station. Look for WARDC, UNFPA desk office or FIDA.

Notice I put "forced" in quotes. It's a game that simply makes sex more interesting (exception being long-term partners). You never, never, NEVER force sex on anybody. NEVER!!!
