I don't believe in agents. As they do not have any special information beyond what's on the internet and only when you do it yourself you can be sure it's getting done. Some agents will collect your money and won't touch your file

When I was working in Lagos 15 to 20yrs ago. I lived in Egbeda and worked in VI.
From Monday to Friday I never saw my area in daylight because my alarm wakes me up by 4:15 by 4:50 I must leave my bus stop otherwise I won't get to VI before 9.

Around that time, you will have the chance of beating 6 different traffic points in Roundabout, Cement/Ikeja Along, Bank Anthony, Iyana Oworo, end of 3rd mainland/Obalende then VI traffic.

If you don't leave before 5am and you are already in Roundabout traffic be sure you are entering all those 6 traffic points at least

Work typically ends by 7pm ish but to avoid those traffic points VI to Egbeda its advisable to wait till 9:30 so I can speed through and get home by 11pm.

No time for breakfast nor dinner. Eat dinner either at Mama Kass or in traffic(bread and akara). By the time I get home at 11. I know I have 5hrs of sleep so everything to make me fall asleep as quick as possible must be done. This includes shayo, shekpe anything to ensure those mosquito buzz does not interrupt the short sleep.
These timeliness now get even worse if there is Holy Ghost night or any accident or robbery on the way. Holy Ghost night 2005 was when I took Okada from VI to Mende. Okada over 3rd mainland was not a funny thing. But those that drove that day didn't leave VI standstill traffic till 3am. Traffic that came all the way from redemption camp

The only time it makes sense is when clients decide to lodge us in hotels on the Island. Which means you work till 11pm at times you even work all night especially if they have a tight deadline. If your friends get lodged you even beg him to squat with him to avoid those traffic

Saturday and Sundays when I don't work I still have to go to Iponri for ACCA lessons.

I have a friend who was transferred by his bank job to Ibadan. I will be in the office in VI before he wakes up, by the time I'm leaving office at 9:30 he's already in bed.

My options now became leaving free accommodation in Egbeda to rent in Surulere. I tried a 3 bedroom flat in James Robertson. The landlord told me 600k a year and 2 yrs needed making 1.2m

So I just made the decision at 25-26yrs doing all these wahala daily how will I make it to 50yrs without major illness.

That supposed money for rent plus savings na wetin I gather to japa.

When I started working in corporate America my house was 5mins from work so I can wake up at 8 and get to work by 8:30. Some times I even time my lunch to come home and watch Champions league matches.

You have really been thru things and I am glad it is just an history to look back at and smile.

I must hail you...

I spoke with a friend in Canada, he said the easiest way to Canada is also through the education route. The skilled express entry takes a long while and there are no guarantee sef.

Said someone he knew took about 19 months for the him to get the Visa.

This is also true cos with education in Canada you are almost guaranteed to get a job or even apply for Express entry and one of the criteria that can add almost 50 to 100 points is education in Canada and work experience in Canada.

When you go school in Canada you get these 2 apply for Express entry and you are almost certain

Would've considered UK, Spouse go to school while I go as dependent but wifey is not interested in UK so that door is closed.

Express entry. You must ace IELTS. As in get about 8. You need to have a higher degree like Masters. Age under 33 to have the best chance. Evaluate your transcripts through WES or IQAS.

The cutoffs are so high these days so anything that can give you an advantage like learning French, or even marrying a younger girl who has better points she will be the primary applicant and you and go as a dependent. If you will drop the proof of funds a young 27 to 30yr old girl with a Masters or PhD. That can clear IELTS will do

I have a higher degree already and a professional qualification with job experience. But I think I will be allow my spouse apply as Primary applicant jare to maximize the points.

People outside Lagos can never fully understand the craziness surrounding a Lagos based career.

One of the female associates we worked together when she first started work, her dad will have to wait for her at the bus stop to follow her home else how does a 23yr old girl drop at a typical Lagos bus stop at 11pm sometimes with laptop.

Even me at way over 6ft I've been obtained a few times and usually have lose change to give boys on out street but dem werey sometimes go change am for me. The crews I know will deliberately leave and another crew will come. So no familiarity and billing must be at premium. Otherwise they deflate your car tires or roughen you.

You also have to adopt other skills like taking off your suit and wear something rough. Also have a lighted cigarette in your hand and walk like an alaye so they don't think you are a soft target plus learning the language of the street.

Darkness no dey respect anyone

Many young married girls had problems in their marriage abi how do you manage getting home by 10pm and above daily. Unless your husband works I'm the same industry

This was When I first started work and was staying with my parents. Either my mum or dad will follow me to bus stop as early as 5.30am cos bad Boys were always lurking around in the dark with cutlass and locally made pistol looking for how to dispossess you of ur phone and laptop.

For instance you know to get student visa you need say 40M, In your account you have max 6M, Yet one agent is asking you to drop 1M to him say he will get you visa

Kickback is official unofficially in Nigeria, almost everybody want's to make something from putting u on. There are only few people who help u for the sake of doing good nowadays.

I can't forget our late former neighbour(God rest his soul ) The man fixed my siblings for INEC Ad-hoc job in 2003 elections, he also fixed them for the 2006 National population census job as enumerators. That was how the elderly one between my siblings thought of appreciating him and bought some gift items for him. If u see the way the man reprimanded my siblings ehn....He said how much did they make from the ad-hoc job that they are wasting money buying something for him? He felt they were being fooolish and do not know how to manage money grin...... He asked them to return the gifts to the seller and even offered to follow them to return it if the seller refuses to refund them. He was one of the good ones.

Wow. This kind of man no dey Nigeria again. Just imagine the selflessness.

Advice for anyone planning to run this Japa route is to process transcripts early enough, even if na like two years time you dey work towards. Had school-based Japa planned last year, started processing transcripts as early as February 2022, then ASUU happened, got my MS transcript, still dey wait BS transcript, and the schools insist they need the BS transcript to do anything since I'm going for another MS in a different field from what I studied initially.

Application fees to like 5 schools paid, but nothing can be done without them getting my transcripts, doesn't help that Nigerian government Universities hoard transcripts like palliative, even student copy dem no dey give...but if you pay them fit codedly give you, will advice getting a personal copy of your transcripts (by any means necessary) to make the applications seamless.

And for persons looking to switch fields into IT from non-IT backgrounds, would advise getting an MS in info tech or ideally a PgD in Computer Science from Unilag or any other school that runs a fast curriculum (assuming ASUU doesn't go on strike), so you'd have fulfilled the pre-requisites which most of the schools will need...gives one the option of applying to a lot more schools a limited number of schools.

Dey run PgD for Unilag at the moment, might see it out before starting anything again, but should do the Canada thing this year (wifey has an MS), the money wey be like e waste last year still dey pain me cheesy

I still believe school as the easiest japa means sha, and one doesn't have to have all the cash on ground before moving.

No be just me, I am not special in anyway cos many people that made it in Naija corporate world have the same thing to say

Many of those guys you see as top guys in corporate world today did this same type of hustle 20-25yrs ago. You have to pay your dues otherwise you wont go far

There are guys when I initially did banking that couldn't cope with the hectic life of Lagos and sought transfers outside Lagos. 20yrs later many of them are still stuck as SBO, while those who rough am are not DGM and GM in top banks in Lagos

If you are in Access Bank Umuahia Branch, your promotion can never be like that of someone in Head office branch. So you either take the stress and rapid career movement or chill life and career stagnation

In many banks moving from one level to the next takes 3-5yrs some even longer especially for Older generation banks

Below is the typical Naija bank career progression

Executive trainee (ET)
Assistant banking officer (ABO)
Banking officer (BO)
Senior banking officer (SBO)
Assistant Manager (AM)
Deputy manager (DM)
Manager
Senior manager (SM)
Assistant general manager (AGM)
Deputy general manager (DGM)
General manager (GM)
Executive director (ED)
Managing Director (MD)

That is 13 levels. If you have to go through each level at normal 3yrs per level without missing promotion you can become ED after 36yrs of working. Imagine if its 5yrs or move for every move and you come dey miss promotion once in a while. It might take you 70yrs. When you add that to your 25yrs you started. How old before you make GM??

Yet no bank ED will be above 55yrs. You have to wonder how people make DGM GM under 50yrs. Thats because they did things to give them advantage like some of those unpalatable and extremely stressful things I described and even more

These is why some people do all those terrible hustling like waking up at 4am daily, taking ICAN, doing online MBA kissing Ogas assz, Picking Ogas kids from school, Sleeping with bosses etc to make it

If you no come from rich or influential background it now makes it even worse
Its not easy

Back in 2014, I had a very easy route into the Nigerian Navy and made it to the training in Onne. Around the same time, I got another job and was undergoing training in Lagos. Had to leave the Navy thing and focused on the job I had. Irrespective of the promises and assurances I had been given that going for the Onne training was just formality, I felt a bird at hand was worth more than a thousand in the bush.

There are times I now look back and wonder if going for that Navy job would have been a better choice. Maybe I would have been posted to Escravos or Forcados making mad money plus job security.

As you rightly noted, I guess we just never know.

Very solid advice. Start early and if you have to travel to your school location to grease palms do it. Cos one thing fit happen today next week and delay or ruin your plan. Opportunity needs to meet preparedness

Transcript don stall many peoples Japa plan especially with that ASSU NASU strike. Person even dey wey be say he got transcript, sent to WES for evaluation, WES wan confirm transcript from school na that time ASUU strike dey for over 1yr. No one to confirm transcript and the IELTS wey him hustle to get 8points after like 5-6 attempts expire for his hand as IELTS only have a 2yr validity

Omoh.... You see things oo.... What if you never made that decision? Japa is the Way!!!!!!

One will never know. I might be ED or GM in Access Bank and I might also have been laid off in all the layoffs and Tsunamis that hit the economy , job market and not have a job now. No guarantee anywhere even when you Japa sef nothing sure

Currently in Yankee all the big techs are laying off. Microsoft 10K employees, Google 12K employees. Imagine the number of people and those who even work for companies that depend on Google/Microsoft etc

Obainojazz its this looming recession you need to factor when planning to buy a big house vs a smaller one

Assuming one is employed in any of these or similar companies, is it possible to be running some freelance gigs on the side (probably still in same field), as per the way Nigerian employees dey take hustle, cause having something like that would come in handy with these layoffs.

Lol...same thing here, my GRE score of 315 wey I take since 2019 or so is looking like it's going to waste cause of indecisiveness, personal issues and Naija factor. True. Once wife and child enters, japa is another thing entirely.

It depends. If its totally freelance it might be acceptable but not a full time job.

Also your company makes you sign an agreement that you wont do any work in a related field without company approval

E.g You are working with Google as a developer on one of their upcoming platform, How will they be sure you are not using their proprietary code for your freelance?

They(Google) kind of have a right to codes you write in the time you work for them

If you work with Google but freelance as a dancer in Cubana club that is allowed though. Since they are not direct competitors
