Iamgrey5:Most returnee former slaves were not of Lagos Island origin or Awori indigenes, but chose to make Lagos Island as a settlement point and became part of the successful and rich Yoruba elite from which they came from originally. Returnee ex-captives or liberated Yorubas were majorly of Egba, Ijesha, Ketu (in Benin Republic), Oyo, Ijebu, Ekiti, Owu origins who returned in the 1800s to Lagos Island and Abeokuta from Sierra Leone, Brazil, Cuba, USA (e.g., the 2 Vaughan brothers whose Egba Yoruba father was a Prince and was captured and taken to South Carolina, U.S.A as a captive on a slave ship just after 1800). The Brazilian returnee and first Nigerian British pounds millionaire, Candido da Rocha was of Ijesa origins from today's Osun. The Brazilian returnee and legal giant, Sir. Adeyemo Alakija was an Egba and he dropped his foreign Brazilian name Placido Asumpcao, and adopted a new Yoruba name called Alakija. |
