I regret having wasted my 5yrs in school. I can't have a B. Agric tech in animal science and be working as a housekeeper in a hotel. It's so disheartening. Honesty.

Sometimes I feel I made a serious mistake going to the tertiary institution.
I had my OND degree about 8 years ago after several months of job searching I realised I couldn't get a job with it and the OND is just as useless as ssce I decided to get a better degree I wrote jamb I got admitted to the university 5 years ago to study engineering.
Now in a few months to my graduation (if ASUU call off the strike) I feel I made a great mistake going back to school.
I feel all the efforts, time and money is be wasted.
I feel going back to school was a mirage cus after school will I still go back to the street as usual.
Do you ever regret going to school?

I regret marrying the woman I married

Do you ever regret going to school?

You are very dull and your mindset is flawed, that is your problem.

BTW, you are still not properly educated even now. You are referring to an Ordinary National Diploma as a DEGREE.

That being said, the primary aim of formal education is to increase your KNOWLEDGE base and sharpen your mind to THINK. To pursue a degree programme solely for the purpose of securing a paid employment thereafter is a wrong mindset and a recipe for unending frustration.

If you have increased your knowledge base and can think creatively, you can't be jobless. You will be either employed by another or be self-employed.

Till today, my cousin regret ever getting a degree without a better job. He said, if he had known what he knows now then, he would have venture into business or learn a skill instead of wasting the 5yrs course in school and 1yr nysc. That by now, he would have become an employer of labour and a boss on its own and still go back to school if he had want.

You go to tertiary institution basically to obtain the certificate, and not to learn and acquire knowledge.

If you come from a poor background, I think there are some courses you better not study in Nigeria even on a full scholarship. If you are not able to get a professional/lucrative course, you'd be better off acquiring lucrative skills or learning trades, then enroll for a degree after finding your feet if you are still interested in one.

God bless you for Overflowing Wisdom.

Until you find it difficult to knock on some doors or air your views in some circles because you don't have the necessary certification.

Formal Education is never a waste... You can get away with some privileges in this country on the basis of having Bsc alone

If the university wasn't the reason why I left Nigeria and established myself in the west, I would regret going to uni, especially if I did it in Nigeria. Most of what I know is based on my elemental habit of autodidactism (self-study), as opposed to a traditional method of education.

I make money via my entrepreneurial skills, and not through my degree whatsoever. In fact, I like the social aspect of the university, to be exposed to things I won't otherwise be, but the education purely in itself can be gotten through other methods without stress, late-night sleep, expense, and pausing oneś life for four years.

On a deeper note, dear people, please listen.

Do! Not! Be! Ever! Deceived!
Education is not and can never be a scam!

Being helped with miracle centres, and helped with admission, and graduating with lower, 3rd class, pass etc is not education and is barely ever going to fix you anywhere in another person's business! I mean even you will not employ yourself with this kind of result!

Are you blind or deaf ni? I know you know the truth but you purposely blind yourself to it.
I can't count countless of my peers who are well educated and are extremely comfortable and even posed for more success ahead.

Soyinka, by virtue of being a NP, will never have his luggage checked at any port in the world. Too, Ngozi Iweala, ambassadors, and some others educated fellows are in this category. For education, these are possible.

Whereas, Dangote, Musk, Bezos will be checked of routine security regulation at most ports in the world.

That doesn't make education sound like a scam to me. I mean no random Emeka, Kemi, Rufai would easily enjoy these reverence because they were not educated. Nothing that brings comfort and fulfillment can ever be a scam. Show me the person in top 10 richest who didn't pass through education - some attended the best schools in their country just to get education and drop out when they did while others graduated - one thing is clear however, they attained education!

Don't fall for the popular ongoing "education na scam" narrative. It is famous for two reasons:
1. The educated ones don't want you educated. They prefer to enjoy whatever prestige it brings alone, alongside their kins. They're glad you continue to look up to them in some ways.
2. It's mongers failed in education and so have no place in it. Thus, they don't want you to do it, because then you may usurp them in (social) status.

If education is your passion, do stop at nought. even at 35. It will never be a scam!

It's a scam.. as long as you know how to read and write, find something that gives you money. Thats it. Truck drivers make more than most university graduates in advanced countries. See the population of university graduate degree is about 35% in America and the advanced world. Zuckerberg. Facebook CEO is a Harvard drop out. Steve jobbs only learnt how to code. Use your head. If are going to school and your are investing 8-10 million. To be paid #80,000 monthly. That's if you even see such jobs. Something is wrong with you. It's only in Africa that people carry school 4 head. Just like religion. I tire!

Even though I'm not currently using the certificate I acquired to work (resigned* last year), I'm still grateful I had the certificate...

Going to tertiary institutions should not be solely for the aim of the certificate or the financial benefits the certificate can be used for but the knowledge gained which should be very vital for the society. Schools should refine you to become a better version of yourself smiley

Pls nairaland guard me Dos and Dont in polytechnic

If you need the certificate for a salaried career, just go for Bachelors or OND + Bachelors.
Having HND is going to slowdown your promotion

Do you ever regret going to school?

OP, it is obvious you do not know the main reason of going to school. Unfortunately, there are many of you out there and here on nairaland.
School is not and end as you think, it is not a destination too wink.

Btw, OND is not a degree, it is a Diploma. If I did not go to school, I would not have been able to correct you wink

I regret every day because it has never helped me in anyway, rather it had set me back. All my peers without degree are doing well in a thier craft and businesses while I’m waiting for a job that doesn’t exist

Will be 29 in few months yet nothing to show, still lives in family house, no skill or any funds to start up any business. I can’t even learn a skill now because who will take care of my feeding and bills for the those periods?

I’m depressed most times

The thing Is Education is Good and the best Legacy. But in a Nation like Nigeria, You can't really be proud of going to school These Days If you hail from a Poor Background.

If we check well. Most of these people complaining are from Poor/Average Backgrounds in Nigeria. And the Poor/Average Families are always the Majority In any Nation all over the World.

The Times when Poor/Average People doesn't need any Connections to Climb the ladder of Success Is long gone In Nigeria Forever.

A Rich/Wealthy family wouldn't complain one bit.

Nope I don't..

Learning is a continous process.. you learn both on and off campus. I learnt the one on campus and still learning off campus till this very moment.

It depends on how you see life.. you need to have a positive mindset and embrace delayed gratification to become successful in life.

Education is still the best legacy.
