When I was reading online this evening I came across this article .......................

"The idea behind companion cropping is to create a mutually beneficial ecosystem and functionally diverse plant community to increase individual plant production," he said. "When we have different crops that fill different functional niches, we find diverse planting can produce more overall and decrease input costs."

The study included intercropping peanuts, watermelon, okra, cowpea and hot peppers.

Peanuts and cowpeas are legumes, which fix nitrogen from the air and supply it as nitrates to companion plants, Masabni said. Watermelons were chosen as a smother crop to suppress weeds and provide soil shading to conserve water moisture. Okra was chosen for its tall growth form and as a potential pollinator attractor due to its large showy flowers. Hot peppers were chosen as a potential pest barrier.

Franco utilized five treatments to test the intercropping system within the same rows, including a row of peanuts and watermelons; peanuts, watermelons and okra; peanuts, watermelon, okra and cowpeas; a row of all five plant species; and a strip intercropping system of peanuts and watermelons consisting of alternating single rows.
We found that three to four species consistently yielded higher per-unit land area compared to crops grown alone," Franco said. "We reduced inputs like fertilizers and herbicides. We actually used minimal fertilizer and no herbicides, and the only major input we utilized was irrigation. So we enhanced resource use efficiency by planting the crops together."

Masabni said intercropping is an ideal method for small-acreage growers with limited land space.

"The results are encouraging for these growers because we proved you can get better yields if you choose the right crop combinations of nitrogen fixing legumes, tall plants and smother crops," he said. "It makes me wonder how they knew to do this, but Native Americans knew exactly what they were doing, and we've proved the concept works."

Hello please my pepper nursery bed was attacked by these rat and lizard what can I use to cure or stop these rodent destroying my pepper pls help seriously needed.

okoroemeka:
to get 60k weekly from a pepper farm u will need to have at least 1200 avenir pepper stands and that will be squeezed into 3 plots of land at 4feet× 4feet square spacing,it will start to yield from 100 days in dry weather and 120+ days in rainy season, hybrid fresh pepper is resistant to root knot nematodes, but it will be devastated by bacterial leaf spot and tobbaco etch virus, restricted entrance into the farm most be maintained , especially in the morning when it is wet with dew, spraying a cocktail of contact and systemic fungicide is a must every week, also pepper needs a special fertilizer of Epsom salts and cal-mag fertilizer,if u eventually gets it right u will see production of 5-7 bags every 4 days from a healthy 1200 pepper crop, today's price for a bag is 7,000k,so the weekly target is achieveable, you must prune your crops once before it forms a Y branch by cutting off the top growing tip this will create a profusion of many branches that will translate to more yield, make the stems stronger and also the plant will not grow too tall,in all pepper is an easy and straight forward crop to grow the only stressful part we encountered is harvesting the ripe fruits, from the pics shown it should have been in single grow bags and pruned already,we keep our crops in Single grow until they are ready to flower before they go out on the field,

Good morning.

I place my seedling trays on a pavement.. some still have the seed leaves while some now have true leave.

Do you think the root will not do well due to the placement on pavement?

Do you think the root will stick round the cocopeat?

99% of all video and image seen are place either on a bamboo or on a bench. The root don't leave the cocopeat, it is just round it.

Can I lay newspaper on the pavement then put the seedling trays on it.

Hard to tell. Depends on how well you fertilize.

If the pavement is wet the roots will reach there.

Good day forum members. Just joined today April 30th. I have enjoyed the conversations on PEPPER planting especially following the '30k twice a week from my pepper farm' proposal that was started by one brilliant and dedicated farmer. Its been very interesting and I commend everyone here. I eager and hope to learn the trade of pepper growing through your experiences in the coming days and seasons. I will be farming in the Delta state where I have commenced the season intercropping egusi melon/maize/cassava on a few acres. I have ample
farmland to develope the pepper farm too. I will appreciate your guidance as we go along. Thank you.

Calcium is needed. If you don't have, spray sharpshooter insecticide.

Good afternoon my fellow nairalander most especially the like minds from the great Agricultural section, we are the best because we feed other sections,na we be their father.
Now, let’s look into pepper farming and the benefit of starting it as a business. In the process of researching business opportunities in Nigeria, I have discovered that no one has any good reason to be poor. If you are poor, it’s either because you want to or you’ve not been properly informed. There are many things you could pick up today and walk yourself up there within the next three years. One of them is pepper farming. I'm starting my pepper farming now wish I promise to share all my activities here for correction, learning and encouragement from everyone. My goal is to generate at least 30k twice a week from my investment twice on a week.... We shall see if it's possible or not, may God help me.
I'm planting herbanero pepper (Rodo) and jalapeno (bawa)
Got my hybrid seeds from technism, Avenir f1 and forever f1 variety . I have done the nursery by broadcasting it
That's interesting.

I'm a new pepper farmer, I did my pepper nursery 3-4 weeks ago.
I couldn't afford F1 seed, I bought 1000 naira fresh pepper from a friend, remove the seed and I spray on my raised bed. They germinated well and grow very fast.

Hope you did market survey to determine acceptability of your chosen fruit size?
In my locality, people consider the big fruit rodo as Hausa variety and only buy it in the absence of local small-sized rodo pepper.

Thank you sir, people buy whichever varieties they could lay their hand on so far it's rodo, whether local or efia or Piquante

Good day everyone!

Can someone please advice or explain the necessary chemicals ( herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and fertilizers) required for a pepper farm.

I would like to understand the required chemicals, how often should application be, required amount and every other tangible information and practices that will guarantee maximum yield.

I am very new into agriculture, but I will appreciate every professional assistant I can get ranging from reading resources, advices, direction and all, I am very willing to learn as I very diligent.

Thanks in anticipation.

Read from page 1 to page 59, read farmerakinyole threads on tomato and cucumber, okoroemeka on cucumber, find pistotita and read(it's complex, but there is knowledge in between those big grammars and stories you will regret not following later) write a detailed summary of what Info and knowledge you have extracted, then ask specific questions to gain specific clarification on certain aspects that are a lil bit too technical.....I come back many times to read them myself

Good morning, Nairalanders.
Talking about 'very nice AROMA' from Piquante brings me to my own pepper farm. I ordered CARIBEAN RED HABANERO (1000 seeds satchet) and sowed the nursery in May 2023. The plants did well and produced beautiful fruits. I started HARVESTING 2nd week of September but now found that the hybrid pepper DID NOT HAVE ANY AROMA OR GOAT SCENT at all and now rejected at the market. Is this the nature of the variety or was my production wrong? Where can I find pepper seeds that will produce GOAT MEAT AROMA? Thank you, Sirs.
Re: 30k Twice A Week From My Pepper Farm by Kehfie(f): 11:02am On Oct 01, 2023
What's your location. I think the pepper you are referring is Avenir from Technisem seeds. It doesn't have goat meat aroma but has a nice hot scent that can be perceived from a long distance.
