How a one-year trip to Enugu became a permanent one for Adewale Alao, founder of Purple Krown College, Enugu

When he finished his higher education, Adewale Alao was posted to Enugu State in 1992 for his compulsory National Youth Service Corps scheme.

Based on the unsubstantiated stories he had heard about the Southeast, he had his qualms about the posting. Matters were not helped by the fact that many of his friends and associates who had been posted to the Southeast had used the influence of their relatives to change the posting from the Southeast to their preferred state. But somehow fate took him to Enugu State and he accepted his fate. Even his family members were not at ease when he left for the Southeast.

After his NYSC orientation, he was posted to College of Immaculate Conception (CIC) Enugu in 1992 for his primary assignment as a teacher. He taught mathematics and further mathematics to the students.

Months into his stay in Enugu, his first-hand experience in the Southeast was completely different from the stories he had heard before.

At the end of his service year in 1993 when the school offered him the chance to become a permanent teacher, he grabbed the opportunity with both hands and stayed back in Enugu, contrary to his thought that he would leave the Southeast after his NYSC.

A journey that he thought would last for one year soon changed course and became a long or permanent one, as he moved from one school to another, rising in the teaching profession, teaching at schools like University of Nigeria Secondary School, Holy Rosary College, Baptist High School, Uwani Secondary School, Pine Crest College, all in Enugu.

Having garnered much experience in secondary school education in Enugu, he saw a gap he could fill and decided to set up his school in Enugu. In 2007, that dream came to fruition as Wale Alao founded Purple Krown College (PKC), Enugu. His mission was to provide quality education to youths at a moderate fee.

The school has been growing in leaps and bounds. Just six years of its existence, Purple Krown College defeated Government College Abuja in 2013 to emerge champions of that year’s finals of the 2013 Shell/NNPC U-18 secondary school football competition which took place in Lagos State, thereby emerging as Nigeria’s representative at King of England’s Cup held in London that year.

Purple Krown College is located at 20/22 Osadebe Street Ogui New Layout, Enugu, Enugu State, Nigeria has its vision as follows: “To give every student opportunity to discover their true self, develop the strength within (spiritually, physically, academically and socially), and be sharpened into a suitable instrument and productive in the world tomorrow.”

Crawl out from your hole and explore Nigeria so ignorance can leave you. But some have allowed ethnic bigotry to becloud their sense of reasoning.

This could pose a risk to him.

Modified: for those quoting me, you know that the igbos are being attacked in lagos. There were intimidations of the igbos by the yorubas during the last election. Igbo markets and businesses have been set ablaze in recent times. Igbos are being told to leave lagos and go develop the east. If there should be a reprisal attack, this post the op made about this yoruba guy could pose a danger to him. Some miscreant may decide to look for him and his business to attack.

We have seen such reprisal attacks here in the east against the northerners any time igbos/Christians are attacked in the North.

The igbos can do the same to the yorubas.

So much for the hate and bigotry. What will urchins say about this now? I thought they said igbos are not welcoming and other Nigerians cannot own properties in the east.

The South East is one of the coolest places any Nigerian can make a living. Contrary to what Yorubas think, Igbos are highly detribalized.

They can try, but success story is less than 10% because of bitterness, hatred, hostility, wicked, evil and anguish, who leave a land flowing with milk and honey to unsafe land where their traditional leaders security operatives and influential people are killed like mere cockroaches, what a senseless risk

Don't mind those timid people. I grew up in Aba Abia State with many Yorubas from primary school up to university level and non of them were molested or feel uncomfortable in anyway rather they all feel at home. Nobody reminded them that they are non-indigenes or referred them as immigrate the way Yoruba refer to non-Yoruba in Lagos. I remember one Bimbe that ran away from her family house to stay with her boyfriend who is my friend because her parents wanted to bring her back to Yorubaland. It is those unexposed ones that never travel out of their enclave that think Nigeria start and end in Lagos.

Back then in the late 90s and early 2000s, Alao was a popular name amongst youths in Enugu city because he was the go-to guy when it comes to maths lessons for SSCE, GCE and JAMB,, reason his tutorial centre was always jam packed.

Go to Onitsha, Yoruba tailors run the show..

Then visit many construction sites of those mansions being built in the villages in the East, just speak Yoruba and you get instant response from the Yoruba workers because there is a dearth of such skills amongst igbos, so skilled workers are brought in from the Southwest.

If he "interferes" in Enugu politics tomorrow, Enugu people might vote for him instead of asking him to leave their land or asking his family members not to come out of their homes on election day.

He should not go into politics. Even if he makes alot of money in the South East, he should respect the natives who understand the people more to handle the politics of the region.

Excuse for laziness and lack of adventure. Igbos are hitting it big in Maiduguri and Kano. Yorubas are not even close in those places despite religious intolerance even though yorubas are partly Muslims

He is free to contest for election wherever he lives as long as he has contributed to the development of the place. The Igbos might even honour him with a chieftaincy title. Their thinking is totally different from that of some well known bigots.

South west should implement skilled workers visa for South Easterners migrating to South West.We only need educated Igbos or someone with skilled work not hustlers coming without cash, coming to run trading business every one can do.

The Yoruba tailors and construction workers are skiĺled.

Will he be paying taxes to Enugu government too?

Ethnic bigotry has a special way of reducing intelligence.

If anyone is paying taxes in a region where he resides, he should be involved in the electoral process.

This is why education is important so people like you can know the constitution.

But lack of education has given birth to many ethnic bigots who think only indigenes should participate in election

When I hear some Yorubas narrative of discrimination in Igbo land, I shake my head repeatedly in disbelief. How can people who never travelled in Igbo land accuse them wrongly like this?

I wonder where the accusers get the narrative from. It's a big shame that people can cook up any propaganda against Igbos and some people will stupidly believe. Big Shame

Why should I be ashamed of your IGNORANCE? It's not my fault if you choose to be backward in thinking.

From the tone of your comment, you are obviously jealous that Igbo people are prospering in other lands.

Let the envy continue to press your neck.

The more you spread lies that Igbo people don't sell lands to outsiders, the more you brainwash your brothers from coming to Igboland to invest.

Cry me Atlantic ocean!!
