How To Reduce Hook-ups In Nigeria by Gerrard59(m): 2:38pm On May 10, 2023 |
Sequel to these threads (https://www.nairaland.com/7678352/hookup-culture-nigeria-bad-even/1#122971617; https://www.nairaland.com/7680544/what-caused-hookup-culture/5#123045490) where Nairalanders, mostly males, keep complaining about the rise of hookup in Nigeria. I thought it pertinent to outline solutions that will REDUCE, not stop the trend. The demand for sex by men is rising and consistent. As long as men crave sex and women are the only suppliers, nothing can be done. For hookups to reduce, Nigerian men should reduce their insatiable quest to have sex with random women. It is like having a department where male lecturers don’t do engage in sex for grades, ladies who are open to such will be forced to read their books whether they like it or not. Men create the system and women integrate into it. To buttress this, when women who have been doing hook-up attain 30+ years, there is a declining demand for their services because sexual service is tied to age and how young a woman is. As a result, she is either forced to retire or accept lower fees. This is because her customers – all men – have either stopped patronising her or are offering less cash. The men control the system. It is a biological fact (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22552705/#:~:text=Sexual) for men to yearn for sex more than women. Women are literally the only people who can quench this thirst. Some will say it is because of greed, but c’mon! If you own something which is in high demand that is not regulated nor banned by the government, are you saying you won’t charge prices for it? Remember, this demand is consistent and persistent. But errm, hook-up is the same with yahoo yahoo or drugs trading. That is not true. Cybercrime, like the name implies, is a crime in almost every part of the world. Some governments legalise sex work and even offer health care services and tax them. But no government has legalised defrauding people online. This is because policymakers realise that sex is a natural phenomenon in which humans and animals indulge. You cannot outlaw people having sex. It is not possible. Even in conservative Dubai (https://www.economist.com/middle-east-and-africa/2023/01/05/women-in-the-middle-east-are-leading-a-revolt-against-prudish-men), women are going behind the corners to import intimacy gadgets. The government by law bans it, but does not arrest those who import it. But try importing guns into the country and see the government’s reaction. Dealing with hard drugs is not a natural concept for humans. It is acquired, so governments ban it or regulate it tightly compared to sex work. For instance, in Geylang, Singapore, young women mostly from China engage in hookups under regulation from the Singaporean government. But if you transport drugs to Singapore, you get the death penalty, no ifs or buts. Japan has the second biggest porn industry globally, but you will be arrested, denied a lawyer for 21 days and detained or deported if you transport drugs into the country. The UAE restricted Nigerians’ entry, mostly men. The UAE would rather have Nigerian girls doing hookups in Dubai than her men committing cybercrime. There has not been a break-in by the Emirati police to arrest hookers compared to bursting cyber criminals. 54 Likes 9 Shares |

In Nigeria, the argument is that prostitution is illegal. But that applies only to Northern Nigeria, where Sharia is practiced (https://sabilaw.org/the-legality-of-prostitution-in-nigeria/). However, the same people who castigate hookups will never relocate to the North to live. This brings me to the next solution: social engineering. If you want the women in your society to be chaste, it is your responsibility as the men in that society to insist on certain moral standards. It is why young ladies in the North do not openly practise hookup compared to the South. Even in the south, some regions are "morally" stricter than others. It is the men who set the standards. Recently on Facebook, in one of the states in the south, I read that husbands or older men sleep with secondary school girls who just finished WASSCE/SSCE. When you do so while your northern counterpart marries the same girl, you tell that girl in your society that she can charge for sex. Meanwhile, her contemporary in the north knows that for sex to happen, there has to be commitment aka marriage. P.S. Sex is not free. You pay at a point. Another is poverty. The poorer a society is, the greater the number of women engaging in hook-ups. Women are demisexual, but when push comes to shove, they resort to sex work. Because there is a demand. Patronising sex workers is cheaper in poor countries compared to rich nations. The common theme here (https://www.nairaland.com/7496716/what-exactly-does-one-enjoy) was that sex is cheap in Nigeria. But ask your paddies whether patronising sex workers in Canada is cheap, and hear/read their responses. The solution is to ensure your society becomes very prosperous. In return, your women will have fewer reasons to engage in hook-ups. Fewer reasons because even in prosperous societies, hook-ups still exists. Because, remember, sex is natural. There is a demand, and demand doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Unfortunately, Nigerian men have not been able to create a prosperous society (https://www.nairaland.com/6643241/nigerian-men-failed-women). P.S. No prosperous country had women at the forefront of development. 52 Likes 6 Shares |

The way to reduce hook up is for the government to arrest the men patronising prostitutes on the streets and the web. The Government should also fine the men heavily like N500,000 or jail term term of 2 years. Most men will prefer to pay a fine ,the govt generates good money from these money wasting men and it is utilised back into the society. 33 Likes 3 Shares |

cocolacec: Why is that you people have this predeliction for ban, regulation, block etc? Huh? On TwitterNG, some say government should regulate house rents or food prices even when those policies have never worked elsewhere. So, I ask, where in the world do you know that the government arrested men for having sex? Desiring to have sex? Why should the government arrest a man because he has sexual urges (which is natural)? 70 Likes 6 Shares |

Sweetvie: Getting a girlfriend doesn't stop a man from patronising hookers. Just like marrying doesn't prevent or stop a man from having sex with random women. In fact, the biggest patrons of hookers are married men. One of the reasons men patronise hookers is the lack of commitment. Having a girlfriend entails commitment, so why should I buy the cow when there is a an available source of milk that doesn't require me to take care of cows? 54 Likes 6 Shares |

Widespread prostitution, criminality, corruption and every other societal vices are symptoms of an extremely sick society. Look all around the world, the more fallen a society is, the high likely its social structure will degenerate. Your solution of expecting men to voluntarily stop seeking sexual services will not work. It's like applying bandage to an internal cut instead of surgery. When a country is so corrupt that it doesn't give men hope, then men will seek pleasure, and sex is one of it. More specifically, it's in women hands to stop prostitution, not men. It's why women are shamed more for being sexually loose compare to men. If all the sex workers that dress and go stand in the junction stop coming out, then men won't see who to pay. Women are the gatekeeper of sex. They deny sex to men daily, such as the guys they ain't attracted to, their faithful simps, and friendzone brethrens. So why not deny the men that want to pay for it? It's the same dynamics. For example, people always blame men that let a woman use him for cash and attention. you may scream till tomorrow that women should go and work, and that relationship is not a Poverty alleviation program. But it's not effective, except men stop bankrolling such women. It is he, who is the giver/seller that has the monopoly to stop anything. When government wanted to ban okada in Lagos, they didn't start arresting paying passengers, instead, they ban okada and arrest any stubborn drivers who still choose to carry passengers. For prostitution to stop, it's more on women, not on men. But a bigger solution will be for society to become better, so people can live a dignified life without selling their soul. 90 Likes 12 Shares |

pansophist: I beg to disagree. It is men because men are the ones demanding for sex. No woman goes to force a man to sleep with her. It is men who seek out to get women. It is a global phenomenon which I illustrated. It is the reason governments cannot outlaw sex services. My stance is these men who wail daily to know that it is their fellow men, rich men, that fuel this demand. Women on their own don't like to fvck random men. It is biological as they are demisexual, but when there is an enormous demand for a service which only you can provide, economics says offer it provided it is legal. member13: I do have the money but I am not willing to pay that kind of money for nyansh. If more men adopt this stance, the supply of women doing hookups will plummet. It is that simple. But as long as there are men who fork out 80K for sexual service rising, these women will continue to be in the business. So I went on Tinder and ALL the girls wanted money. The girls here are more expensive than in Yankee. How is this possible? This is very interesting. I am not even an ugly guy and I do okay with women, but Lagos girls na wa o. Even the rent here and standard of living is almost on par with where I live. (Granted I rented a place in Lekki, but still). So why do most of you complain about money? Somebody is paying these women If nobody pays these women, they will run out of business. Women are the gatekeeper of sex. They deny sex to men daily, such as the guys they ain't attracted to, their faithful simps, and friendzone brethrens. Like I mentioned above, women are demisexual, so it is very appropriate to deny sex to men they don't like. So why not deny the men that want to pay for it? It's the same dynamics. It is not the same dynamics because in all cases, economics trumps emotions. Australian politicians don't like Chinese politicians, but because their farmers have to sell their crop produce to China (a major consumer), they are appeasing the Chinese. I don't have to like you before I sell something to you. It is business. If I don't like him, but he offers good money, why not take it? It is the reason people study hard to get into tech. They don't like tech, but because it pays better than other professions, they learn it. Should the salaries of tech workers plummet to that of say teachers, nobody will want to enter the industry. Economics over emotions. For example, people always blame men that let a woman use him for cash and attention. you may scream till tomorrow that women should go and work, and that relationship is not a Poverty alleviation program. But it's not effective, except men stop bankrolling such women. We are saying the same thing here. It is he, who is the giver/seller that has the monopoly to stop anything. When government wanted to ban okada in Lagos, they didn't start arresting paying passengers, instead, they ban okada and arrest any stubborn drivers who still choose to carry passengers. First, apple-to-oranges. The government can argue that there are alternatives to use, even though they might not be abundant or safe. In hookup's case, there is no natural alternative for a man who wants to fvck. In developed countries, there are suitable alternatives for those who don't have cars or want to drive, and they use them. Should keke become available in Tokyo, no one will use it because trains are ubiquitous and cheaper. Let there be a vast train network in Lagos, I bet you, no one will use an Okada. In return, Okadas will cease to exist. But Nigerian governments being who they are, put the cart before the horse. For prostitution to stop, it's more on women, not on men. Again, I disagree. The women don't sleep with themselves or ghosts. They sleep with fellow men like you and I. Also, I am not arguing it should stop because it cannot due to testosterone. I am not that idealistic. The average man globally likes to fvck. But a bigger solution will be for society to become better, so people can live a dignified life without selling their soul. I mentioned this - reduce poverty rates in Nigeria and most women will see reasons not to engage in hookup because there are plentiful alternatives to earning good money. Remember, they are demisexual. So an opportunity has been made available. Also, to create a functioning society depends on the men in that society, not the women. It is you who stated that "men create the society and women integrate into it". 11 Likes 5 Shares |

Gerrard59 In a bid to simplify this, I will ask you a few questions. 1. Can you name anything you know of, either a trade, substances (eg drugs), events (e.g. abortion performance), etc, that the government trying to ban it allows the dealers to go free, but arrest/punish only the buyers? So for example, if I sell harmful drugs, I am free to distribute, manufacture, and advertise, but the government only punishes my customers, not me? 2. If I want to stop alomo bitters in the Nigerian market, Which method is more effective between these two scenarios? Scenario A. Ban importation and make it punishable for dealers to sell such services, AS well as make it punishable for customers to use such products. Or scenario B, Punish only customers and let the dealers of alomo trade and conduct their business freely? If you can answer both questions above correctly, then my point will be very clear. Back to the issue, sellers/service providers always have more power to stop the circulation of a business. There are so many examples I can mention but is it necessary? When Buhari doesn't want Twitter, he banned it, AND punish those using VPN to access it. That is more effective than just punishing Twitter users. In most countries, prostitution is illegal. If your method is correct, then it should be the other way around, right? How can you ignore all the societal structures that encourage prostitution and punish only men? it makes no sense frankly. There are hotels specifically to house harlot, then nightclubs, then roadsides where the harlot stands, then hookup sites such as coded runs, and so much more. You will ignore all these things and just go arrest men? Really? like REALLY? if you want to cut a tree, you do it from the root. You don't cut the fruits and declare success. My point still stands. If prostitution has to stop, then women have to stop it, not men. Men could be punished for engaging in such services as trafficking girls, building hotels, and so much more. But it is women, not men, that control sexual access. Not putting the blame on hungry girls that uses prostitution instead of hard work is infantilizing girls. If the government bans prostitution, which means closing a lot of hotels, banning the site-coded runs, arresting any prostitutes found on junctions, and fining nightclubs heavily, prostitution will reduce overnight. But to ignore all these and just go for men only? It won't end. A quick example. If I am the only one selling Amala in a city, I have the power to prevent everyone in that city not to eat amala if I refuse to sell. By the same analogy, only women, not men, have the power to stop it. ANd about my saying that ´men create the society and women integrate into it´, creating a society also means banning prostitution. If men ban prostitution and also punish men luring girls for such services, it will end overnight. cc. lordAdam16, CaveAdullam 49 Likes 8 Shares |
Re: How To Reduce Hook-ups In Nigeria by Karleb(m): 1:53pm On May 14, 2023 |
@Gerrard59 In economics, supply creates its own demand too. Women have more roles to play in stopping prostitution or in sexualizing women. If I haven't known you here for a while, I'd say you were a woman, because it's not uncommon for women to dodge responsibilities. Take for instance, sexualization of women would have greatly reduced but it is same women who wear revealing and half naked dresses that would still complain of men sexualizing them. It's like cooking a nice meal and getting annoyed that people want to eat it. Let's be factual abeg. 17 Likes 1 Share |

pansophist: I actively try to avoid the hookup debate. I don't see it as big a deal as many make it out to be. Sex work is a vital service. Virtually every religion in history had to accommodate it. Including the prudish Muslims and Judaists. Allah, Yahweh, Krishna, Ra, Zeus; no one--mortal or immortal--f*cks with that "profession". It is the grey zone. The men who complain about the "scourge" should be ignored. It's all noise. We have bigger problems to deal with. Besides, there are time-tested measures leveraged for millennia to keep it under control. Everything from districting to random raids. It still goes on in most countries. It happens in Nigeria. As others have mentioned, in the liberal world, the Police conduct sting operations to cull the herd. Economically, the hookup babes fill a niche between the nightwalkers and the high class escorts. A lot of these babes are only ever going to be able to earn minimum wage or decidedly average wages in the labor market. That's their economic ceiling. And all of their bosses, male acquaintances, neighbors.. literally the plurality of males in their lives or that they encounter try to exploit this. The hookup culture finally gave them an opportunity to derive direct, quantifiable economic benefit from this dynamic. Formerly, it was I tip you well or will find a sure connect for a job or some ridiculous tale; then invite them to a crib or hotel room. Afterwards, you ghost the babe. Rinse and repeat. Now, Oga the price na 30K. No long story. Pay a flat rate and bounce. Say we ban all hookup apps and create honeypots to snipe offenders on both banks of the river. What does that solve? Rather than haggle rate over Whatsapp or iMessage, now you have to go old-school. Wine and dine; take her to the cinema; fulfill a monetary need, whether it's fueling her gen or part-paying her rent. Then you have to set up Google Calendar to manage the various itineraries. Check how much you spend, time you waste, and stress for the same objective. It's not like all that will faze Naija guys. Nigerian men are dogs. You see that 15-26 age bracket. If you like mk ur papa be Chief of Army Staff or Olori Oluwo of Ogboni, as far say you be 5+ on the beauty scale, your phone go dey ring non stop. The entire push back against hookup is so they can find a way to f*ck for free. Especially babes in that "ripe" cohort. The urgent 2k wen dey do till TDB, them still dey complain on top. Nothing will satisfy them until legs are spread for nothing. Then they'll discard and go pick a younger b*tch to marry. After they marry, they start screwing teenagers in high school. And guess what they're using to pursue all these girls? Money! Both real and imagined. Allow the bitch*s to secure their bag. Hookup is the great equalizer. It is the only reason why a 3 can f*ck a 7 in Nigeria. Drop the 50K or manage the 1200 ghetto thot. That does not happen in the developed world. Which is why it's naive to expect a better economy to make things better. The prices will get out of reach for the average guy. And the now comfortable ladies will be content only screwing the hot, rich, famous, and hung guys. Then use well-off simps to fill the gaps. It'll be literal hell for the lower class guys complaining now. Their voice go crack. The diasporans already have a preview. You go hold rabba, escort go still block your line. It's as if you guys think it's a joke to spread for every dick and harry. With all the various body and mouth odors. All their weird requests. Entitlements and sh*t. Only nymphos relish that. So when she can get benefits, good paying job, wide social net in a working country; you'll wish $50 is all you need to smash and dash. Lots of non-transactional, casual sex still happen in every Tier 1 city on the planet. NY, Toronto, Sydney, Berlin, Paris, Beijing. Drop most of these guys there and they'll become incels. But here everybody with small change na Casanova, but na hookup be their problem. As for the women should stop prostituting argument. Why?! Vagina no get meter. There's clearly a market. And Nigeria men are just as ruthless in the dating game. How many people are drawing attention to the plights of the relatively-chaste middle aged Shiloh sistas? The chaste women are not finding it easy in and out of marriage either. It's their body, let them do whatever they feel like doing with it. That's my humble submission. -Lord 41 Likes 17 Shares |

Interesting conversations going on here. Ideally, when you cut supply, you cut demand. However, Nigeria's case is different. Hookup is not just because of poverty, it has become a way of life. Girls with good job still do hookup on a bigger level. Greed and the need to live above ones means has taken over our culture. Even with a good economy, you're still likely to have a lot of girls doing hookup. We need a lot of orientation to change people. Perhaps if we start now, the next two generations will adjust and learn to believe in hardwork and shun easy money. 7 Likes |

After reading posts from all parties I have concluded that We all are not ready for this conversation let alone take action on the topic. It's still the usual blame shift, twist of economic rules (demand and supply), and unwillingness to take responsibility. Nigerian men are not ready to learn to control their urges, to them it is impossible. Lol someone said women should be the ones to lock up. Lol when in reality we have seen cases of married men with more than one wife rapping and molesting their teenage daughters, yet women should lock up. An NGO I volunteer for has three cases of child molestation we are still STRUGGLING with. Among the rapists two are married, One engaged but somehow these men find forced sex with teens more pleasurable. And someone still wants women to take the fall for men's lack of control and lock up. Okay... But this thing una use teach yourself no good o Women never lock up, girl child no save. If them come lock up nko? Op, you tried your best but the truth is Nigerians are not ready yet. Persephone1: All these manipulative argumentative tactics that you've deployed only makes you come off as dishonest. Why not quote me directly instead of this lame method? You've even brought in rape into the equation, a sensitive angle that no one will support, just to give your stance some form of legitimacy, but all you did was deviating from the point. To make it clear, rape a crime, and it is never the victims fault. A man that a rapes a child should be given the harshest crime in the book, I support that. Death sentence? No problem. Kill him. I don't care. But rape and prostitution are not the same. Why one earth are you bringing child rape here? Cant you argue your point consistently without deviation? In what world is childrape and prostitution in the same book? Also tell me in what world that to in order to stop prostitution, the women are exempted from any form of responsibility, but just the men. You just proved what karleb is saying. How you women hate accountability. Also tell me which part of my argument violate the law of supply and demands. And also explain to me how letting women to post their private part on coded runs, stand on the junction to lure in customers etc will stop prostitution. And yes my point remains. This is what you can do if you want to be taking seriously. Quote the paragraph you disagree with just like every one have done and engage me on that. Stop hiding behind all these tricks. pansophist:I really do not want to engage you of all people with irrelevant analogies. You twist logic in the head to sound intelligent to gullible followers. First you mentioned baning of okadas, do you realize not only riders are persecuted in lagos? If you are patronizing or on bike as a passenger, you will be arrested and charged to court. You can update yourself by asking those who live in lagos. Why did the government had to go both ways and not ban the supplier (okada owners) alone? In Nigeria, some drugs are banned. I once worked in a pharmaceutical store where we have these drugs in our "poison box" with prescriptions and legal document as back up we sell out these drugs while people are arrested on the streets for possessing them without permission. Why didn't the government arrest we the suppliers only? Why do they have to give us rules to follow while they arrest the users in reckless abound. Are you wiser than government and bodies who hold both parties accountable? Now let's comeback to your outburst. It is manipulative to you when a female moniker points out the impact of your cluelessness on Women and the society at large. It is manipulative when I decide to point out something you all are missing or trying hard to hide which is CONTAINING YOUR LIBIDO. So it is dishonest of me to state the reason I may not suggest eradication of hookup in a country like Nigeria where MEN can not and do not want to control their SEXUAL URGES. Oh spare me your tantrums Pansophist! If you feel offended, work on your ability to reason on all sides before issuing an epistle to your followers. ! Maybe we women do not want to be accountable, what about women of older generations were they not accountable? Where they not virgins and chaste did that stop prostitution? Did it end molestation? Were men satisfied sexually without having six to seven wives, concubines, side chicks, one night stands? Were women not still forced to have sex and raped? You want women to be accountable and close legs, will that help curb men's need for sex. ? No! That's where rape comes in. Do men respect and accept "No" from women? It took false rape allegation to make Nigerian men to recognize and acknowledge the word "CONSENT" when it comes to SEX. So don't try to gaslight me into thinking I'm making things up. In a society where the first and only solution to marital issues for men is "get a second wife" "get a side chick" "satisfy yourself outside " . You want women to lock up. Would will help you lots to save your marriages then? The problem with you is you twist reality to appeal your gullible followers and when someone calls bullshit on your logic you get offended. I don't even want to engage in this topic further. The way you lot reason on some topics on this forum irks me 17 Likes 7 Shares |

I repeat you all are not ready for this conversation. You don't want to examine yourself and acknowledge your part in hook ups so you are not ready. It is very easy for us as women to lock up, can you men lock up? Women never lock up self, you all scope, lie, manipulate, gangrape, molest them. If them come lock up nko? What will happen? Maybe we will also have to lock your urges inside us because you are mindless creatures. Nobody should vex me this evening ooo, enjoy your back patting and head rubbing in peace.
