I don't think we have palm oil here in SA, or at least I've never heard of it here.

Anyway, I can't know all the foods from all the different races here in SA because the country is full of diversity.. There are different restaurants with different foods depending on the location... I'm in Durban and Durban is full of Indian communities, I've been seeing different food types inspired by the indian culture since I came here.
mariahAngel:

We both eat and wear them, depending on their form. 😂

I'm glad you created the thread.
It was interesting and so much fun. 😀

Below are pictures of palm oil and the nuts it's gotten from (palm kernel).
It's rich in vitamin E and antioxidants.
It also gives our soups their rich red colour.

But I've never seen Nigerian food without meat too.

In fact, you guys cook three different types of meat altogether.
thinkmoney:

The ones you have posted are basically really meat based, most time accompanied by some kind of bread

Yes Samantha. But meat isn’t the center. We have varying menus. We use beans, corns, yams, rice (especially), carrot, millets, shrubs, milk and vegetables to fashion out different delicacies.
Probably it’s because we have far more tribes with their distinct delicacies.
To think you guys are influenced by India’s with their rich culinary skills, I had expected more

Yeah but people could meet anywhere. You got a dating south African site to recommend? Go on. At least you could attest to so many Nigerian guys tripping over you. It shows the love, lust and respect we have for SA queens

But we also use pap, samp, rice, pepper, carrots and other variety of veggies, spices and seasonings... So I don't understand what you're talking about.

And remember that rice is not African native food.

I've seen them before here on nairaland, but I couldn't differentiate what is what because most of them are just soaked in too much oil and it can be hard to tell what is inside.

Look, you can't expect our food to be like yours and vice versa.

What source of oil do South Africans usually use in their cooking?

Cooking oil, olive oil, or even butter.

I'm actually talking about here in SA, how do you Nigerians buy your goat meat? Because I don't think we do have the meat in our food stores.

And for your information, I love fish.. grin grin grin... Both fried and tinned fish, but I don't consider it as our native food, hence I didn't post it... It kept me alive during my University days..😂😂😂.. we usually call tinned fish campus food.. grin grin grin

I think our love for meat comes from our Khoisan ancestors because they're well known hunters, but I still haven't seen any Nigerian food without meat.
Not all our food have meat ooo..
Have u seen yam n egg.. plantain n beans or bread and beans?
Canned fish... student food.. It was all for survival tho..
Anytime anyday u will pick meat to fish if offered the choice.
The goat is bought from goat sellers...and shared by those interest...prolly like 4 people will buy a goat n share it.
It's even available in Nigerian foodstuff shops in joburg...
Go to Nigerian mall.. they got it in their chest freezers.
Re: List Of South African Foods by Nobody: 11:36am On May 23, 2023
I don't necessarily consider eggs and bread as African native food because they're eaten worldwide.

And from what I've heard, plantain is also eaten in other tropical countries outside of Africa, someone also posted rice and chicken in here and said it's Nigerian native food, I don't know how come.

But I don't have the energy for arguments today... It was nice chatting with you.

We also eat things like cabbages, spinaches, butternut, chakalaka, sweet potatoes, atcha, and a variety of leafy greens.

Yep, we eat sheep in Nigeria, especially in Northern Nigeria.
Most Livestocks are staple foods in Nigeria except Pork which is neither Halal nor Kosher according to some religious beliefs.

I like butter, but they're quite expensive in Nigeria because they're not locally produced.
Only margarine.

Do they produce butter in South Africa?
If yes, what is(are) the popular brand(s)?
Re: List Of South African Foods by Nobody: 1:29pm On May 23, 2023
I'm not going to lie, when I buy butter, I don't necessarily check which country was it manufactured in, I just take, pay, and go home to use it... grin grin grin
