Some more information about your husband's background would help better match him to a career he might enjoy and be good at...

Did he practise and enjoy marine engineering in Nigeria? What was his occupation?

What about other engineering fields? Is he hands on/ technical?

What are his interests? Financial markets, trading, construction etc?

Is he a people person, outgoing etc - would customer service or project management type roles appeal?

Is he good at Maths, Science - would he enjoy teaching?

Would he be open to an entry level role to enable him gain experience in the field he chooses?

Thank you šŸ˜Š
Yes I think he enjoyed studying and working as a marine engineer. But he only worked for two years after his OND and life happened so he didnā€™t go back to finish the HND. This was over ten years ago. And before we relocated he was into real estate and other side businesses. He didnā€™t have an office job for over 10 years.

He doesnā€™t mind going back into marine engineering but he will need a degree.
He is also open to other engineering fields.

Hi there, I will advise giving IT Support Role a trial. Itā€™s the easiest way to creep into IT. Cybersecurity is not always the stepping stone into IT for a newbie. So many free courses on Coursera for IT support (Google and IBM recommended) Follow Kelvin Apolinario on LinkedIn, he has loads of free hands on training. If you donā€™t mind paying, Jobskillshare is who I will recommend.

Hello house
sorry to derail from current discussion(s)

Please I need advice and itā€™s a long read
I was in a serious relationship before deciding to move to the UK on study route, we decided to get married and come together.
Now I am done with studies and currently on tier 2 visa (support work). I studied MSc Human Resources management btw.
The issue now isā€¦ my partner has an OND in marine engineering and minimal experience, age is also not on his side. And he is currently working in care.
I donā€™t want us to be stuck on this care work for too long. And I have been overthinking lately on what else is there to do, especially for him. As I still have my masters to fall back on. I keep asking him what he would like to do personally but it keeps changing. Itā€™s almost like he doubts his own ability to take up some new career opportunities. We have tried cyber security but I donā€™t think he has any motivation for it. And I donā€™t want us to keep wasting time and money on it.

Please which other career options would you advise on based on this brief background information. I just want him to have something very stable going for him, especially since he is the dependant and has the flexibility to do almost any job or business.. we donā€™t mind the cost of training or the cost to startup a business, as long as it is a realistic long term investment.

He seems almost depressed with the care job and sometimes itā€™s as if Iā€™m being blamed for bringing up the travelling/relocation idea, which I did because even back home things were stagnant and I did not see any future plans for improvement.

Like @Zahra29 said, if he likes teaching he should start looking for exam invigilation jobs in high schools., from there he should look into the getintoteaching program

No he doesnā€™t like teaching unfortunately.

While trying to figure what to do, he can try customer service jobs instead.

Regarding career, he is the best to decide what he wants to do. I would have suggested IT but you said he has tried Cybersecurity but didn't enjoy it. What about going into Rail industry? He would have to do training and get PTS/others. I know there is a lot of money and jobs in the Rail industry.

Hmn thanks
I will tell him to look into the rail industry, we havenā€™t thought of that.
Please, are there opportunities for new immigrants there?

Ok. If he's having a tough time with cybersecurity. Can you look into software testing?

Another option is for him to do a short course and get an MLA job in the NHS. There are lots of other opportunities in the NHS but he needs to step in first.

Joker! Speaking like he's done some survey. Please speak with facts not sentiment.....Lol @ "A lot will surely return home"

Goke7:

Many Nigerians will not remain in the uk too, for so many the Uk is a transition point. Many will not get work visas so they canā€™t stay and from statistics Nigerians have much less overstayers compared to other nationalities. A lot will surely return home or relocate elsewhere.

Dependent Revenue? Tell us more please

Goke7:

The Uk and the schools are no fools, if they will get more from undergraduates, they won't need to give dependents of postgraduates visas, It's a numbers game and that's what they did. How many undergraduates are married compared to postgraduates, this is no raffle draw or charity but a pure numbers game. And the data shows it all. They needed the dependent revenue that undergraduates can't give, period.

"The system rewards their labour better despite not necessarily working harder than others" - You can go to medical school for years to also benefit. What a very ignorant statement!

jedisco:

Lol... let me shock you by telling you most docs/nurses gain more from the system than most of the masters students while arguably contribute same/less

First they dont pay 15k but arrive with the full gamut of their family.
They are exempt from IHS
They can many times be exempt from the 20hr rule
The get the full benefits of working for the NHS.. pensions e.t.c
The system rewards their labour better despite not necessarily working harder than others

The masters students do not benefit any of these but contribute significantly higher sums.

I wonder which group is a drain on the system. The health workers perhaps

Thank you for the response.

Iā€™m not trying to set the pace or determine his career path. I have asked him severally what he wants to do personally and I think the cyber security was what he seemed genuinely interested in. But on starting the course he said it seems too complicated. And we also donā€™t know any one currently on that path that can mentor him in it.
So I am just trying to get suggestions on other jobs he can easily switch to with no prior training or experience.

Also in the past I didnā€™t dictate, we both had the conversation and we both decided moving to the uk was suitable for both of us given our current situation then. Yes I presented the idea, but I didnā€™t force it on him.
My parents initially wanted my sister and I to go through the US route instead (which she later did) but I decided to go to UK because we both did not want the relationship to end.

Where do you live? If he wants to continue the Marine Engineering route then he needs to be where those jobs are - Southampton, Portsmouth, Felixstowe, Lowestoft and the Glasgow/Edinburgh axis. Quite a lot of those jobs are also FIFO but not sure if he can get FIFO straight off the bat.
Otherwise he can upskill in the same specialisation (if he wants to continue that pathway) and get into work that way.

There are free career coaches at the job centre or find a Crisis Skylight if there's one near you. They offer career advice as well.

The so called care job is a minimum paying job for mostly cause they donā€™t get more certifications and training there are people in the Sector that earns40k to 50 yearly and they are fine.the bottom line just develop your skill no be everyone go fit do business analyst or data analyst earn all these courses you have to be ready to do some more sacrifices and spend more. My company team leader is 23 lol she canā€™t even look at me some times if I have one on on with her cause of my stature and my age lol but I still obey her she dy drive 20plate car with customized name all she did was college and lots of certifications and me I went to uni studied chemical engineering but my experience is not recognized. So I have to start from the scratch so itā€™s best we do something we can that mental and health sector as for me is a easy path to reach the top than those complicated IT industry

Could he try looking into an engineering apprenticeship? That would enable him work and earn and gain valuable skills while working towards a degree or other qualification at the end of the apprenticeship.

See a couple of examples below -

https://uk.indeed.com/m/viewjob?jk=a6be2203ef937e87&from=serp

He may need to convert/map the OND to the corresponding UK level qualification, but hopefully he should easily meet the entry requirements.

Let me know if you need any info or help x

It depends on how much time you still have on your visa and also the mood of the Border Agent you meet on arrival. They may not let you in If you have less than 2 months.
