Did he practise and enjoy marine engineering in Nigeria? What was his occupation?

What about other engineering fields? Is he hands on/ technical?

What are his interests? Financial markets, trading, construction etc?

Is he a people person, outgoing etc - would customer service or project management type roles appeal?

Is he good at Maths, Science - would he enjoy teaching?

Would he be open to an entry level role to enable him gain experience in the field he chooses?

Please I need advice and it’s a long read
I was in a serious relationship before deciding to move to the UK on study route, we decided to get married and come together.
Now I am done with studies and currently on tier 2 visa (support work). I studied MSc Human Resources management btw.
The issue now is… my partner has an OND in marine engineering and minimal experience, age is also not on his side. And he is currently working in care.
I don’t want us to be stuck on this care work for too long. And I have been overthinking lately on what else is there to do, especially for him. As I still have my masters to fall back on. I keep asking him what he would like to do personally but it keeps changing. It’s almost like he doubts his own ability to take up some new career opportunities. We have tried cyber security but I don’t think he has any motivation for it. And I don’t want us to keep wasting time and money on it.

Please which other career options would you advise on based on this brief background information. I just want him to have something very stable going for him, especially since he is the dependant and has the flexibility to do almost any job or business.. we don’t mind the cost of training or the cost to startup a business, as long as it is a realistic long term investment.

He seems almost depressed with the care job and sometimes it’s as if I’m being blamed for bringing up the travelling/relocation idea, which I did because even back home things were stagnant and I did not see any future plans for improvement.

Like @Zahra29 said, if he likes teaching he should start looking for exam invigilation jobs in high schools., from there he should look into the getintoteaching program

Regarding career, he is the best to decide what he wants to do. I would have suggested IT but you said he has tried Cybersecurity but didn't enjoy it. What about going into Rail industry? He would have to do training and get PTS/others. I know there is a lot of money and jobs in the Rail industry.

Hi there, I will advise giving IT Support Role a trial. It’s the easiest way to creep into IT. Cybersecurity is not always the stepping stone into IT for a newbie. So many free courses on Coursera for IT support (Google and IBM recommended) Follow Kelvin Apolinario on LinkedIn, he has loads of free hands on training. If you don’t mind paying, Jobskillshare is who I will recommend.

Ok. If he's having a tough time with cybersecurity. Can you look into software testing?

Another option is for him to do a short course and get an MLA job in the NHS. There are lots of other opportunities in the NHS but he needs to step in first.

Many Nigerians will not remain in the uk too, for so many the Uk is a transition point. Many will not get work visas so they can’t stay and from statistics Nigerians have much less overstayers compared to other nationalities. A lot will surely return home or relocate elsewhere.

The Uk and the schools are no fools, if they will get more from undergraduates, they won't need to give dependents of postgraduates visas, It's a numbers game and that's what they did. How many undergraduates are married compared to postgraduates, this is no raffle draw or charity but a pure numbers game. And the data shows it all. They needed the dependent revenue that undergraduates can't give, period.

Lol... let me shock you by telling you most docs/nurses gain more from the system than most of the masters students while arguably contribute same/less

First they dont pay 15k but arrive with the full gamut of their family.
They are exempt from IHS
They can many times be exempt from the 20hr rule
The get the full benefits of working for the NHS.. pensions e.t.c
The system rewards their labour better despite not necessarily working harder than others

The masters students do not benefit any of these but contribute significantly higher sums.

I wonder which group is a drain on the system. The health workers perhaps

I’m not trying to set the pace or determine his career path. I have asked him severally what he wants to do personally and I think the cyber security was what he seemed genuinely interested in. But on starting the course he said it seems too complicated. And we also don’t know any one currently on that path that can mentor him in it.
So I am just trying to get suggestions on other jobs he can easily switch to with no prior training or experience.

Also in the past I didn’t dictate, we both had the conversation and we both decided moving to the uk was suitable for both of us given our current situation then. Yes I presented the idea, but I didn’t force it on him.
My parents initially wanted my sister and I to go through the US route instead (which she later did) but I decided to go to UK because we both did not want the relationship to end.

Yes I think he enjoyed studying and working as a marine engineer. But he only worked for two years after his OND and life happened so he didn’t go back to finish the HND. This was over ten years ago. And before we relocated he was into real estate and other side businesses. He didn’t have an office job for over 10 years.

He doesn’t mind going back into marine engineering but he will need a degree.
He is also open to other engineering fields.
