Now I truly understand sonoflincoln\abbeysunny on American politics thread. This was a guy in America who whenever we're debating issues would always shout, "nigga, you're not in America to feel this things the way we do, shut the fvck up". And we would take it as condescension. But now I can see the point this guy was making.

There is no way you would be so far away and see things the same way those who are right there in the midst feel it. So whatever theoretical position you take, it's very easy for you to do, because no matter how it turns out, you're not affected. So please gor the love of God, shut the fvck up with your insulting and condescending takes devoid of our unique understanding of our apprehensions. Stop seeing our own lives as "a game". Pawns on a chess board, opinions coming from you are largely interpreted to be insulting seeing as they're coming from another place, another reality not ours!!

One truth u need to tell urself is that public education is highly subsidized in Nigeria. I attended a public secondary school for 6 years for free and also attended a public university where we paid few thousands of naira. In fact my 100l-400l school fees is not up to N150k when summed up.

Today I work in the same organization with colleagues who paid millions in fees in Babcock, Bowen, Covenant universities etc.

Apart from the living conditions in the private institutions being superb and a more conducive learning environment, I can confidently say there's little or no difference in the knowledge that was imparted in me by my professors and that of those who attended private varsities. At least we can both function on our jobs based on the knowledge imparted into us by our respective institutions.

I will be lying to myself if I tell people I didn't get subsidized education .

I think the student loan is a good way to go; the government should just perfect the loan repayment process and make sure people don't find a way to game the system. We all know school fees will be increased but the good side is that the school fees payment is deferred to 2 years after graduation.

First of what year did you go to school?
Secondly if you compare teaching experience in federal Universities to private universities, it will be miles apart.
You have alot of lecturers in federal universities that will barely come to class in a semester and still set questions. Try that in private uni make thunder nor fire you.
Should we talk about strikes?
Should we talk about the living conditions again?

So tell me exactly how the education in universities are subsidised?
People go dey search for lecturers like say na treasure hunt with barely any oversight on such airing lecturers.
How is that experience a subsidised thing for students?
Lets not forget that university fees have been going up too.

The student loan isn't bad but what are the students graduating into? We know how hard it is to hustle legit in this country and make it just for yourself alone.

I don't want to touch primary and secondary education because even the saner climes we want to copy offer mostly free education. So it's not in Nigeria we will give government a plus in that.

I will also love them to look into student loans for technical schools also, at least if you feel after school there won't be white collar job for you to repay the loan, technical schools could be an option, you no fit useless both ways.

There are people who will have access to education because of this policy

It's not for everyone. If it's not for you leave it alone those that need it will take it

There were people who got loans to start business and are succesful while there are people who took loans and didn't pay back and failed in business

If a policy doesn't work for you, it will work for some

Where else can you get a loan with zero interest if you want to complain sure go ahead

The student loan move is an applaudable move from the Tinubu’s administration , it’s just that I have a few reservations about its workability and it serving the purpose it was designed for .

I heard it was Gbajabiamala that sponsored the bill. Personally I believe Gbaja is in discordant tunes with the current economic realities . For example , that 500k per annum family income cieling set by the bill is not good enough . 500k per annum when divided by 12 is less than 42k per month . If u say earning 42k or lesser per month as a family is what qualifies a family member for the loan, what happens to a family of 5 that earns 85k per month , pays house rent , utility bills and have next to nothing to save at the end of the month ? Cant their son or daughter benefit from the loan too ?

I think our elected officials need to know about Time Value of money so they can put it into cognisance when sponsoring bills .

Also I would like for government to provide grace for people who don’t get jobs within 2 years of graduation about how to pay back their loans when they eventually get jobs or go into self employment . We all know getting jobs as a fresh graduate nowadays is very tedious . I remember a friend in school who was on 2.1 but a lecturer he had issue with scored him E in a course he should have scored at least B grade . He finshed with 2.2 and it cost him 3 good years before he got a graduate trainee role cos of the grade requirements . So people like that who have loans to pay back to the system can take time to hustle without having their names called out like Palmpay does their debtors .

If all these issues are addressed ……I’m all in for the student loan bill . Make government just make sure people pay back the loan before they japa . Nobody should have a student loan outstanding in Nigeria and have their visas abroad approved.

Valid observation but Tolu says the drafts that's been shared online is the old version so we have to wait for the signed document by the President

Some of the requirements needs to change and the loan repayment should only start when someone starts earning income.

I like the fact that the loan will be paid to the school account though, it eliminates students using the money for something else.

For the first time, i agree with the guy above, this was my thought too
If we consider minimum wage and jobs available the students won't be able to pay up within that 2 years
And i hope the student loan won't end up like npower scam dbanj and his crew did

You are not expected to pay up after 2yrs, the repayments starts after 2yrs at 10% of your fixed income or 10% of profit.

The amendment I'll like to see is that the repayment should starts anytime the students start earning income.

They are actually going to review the minimum wage. I saw somewhere yesterday that they are proposing 70k as the new minimum wage. The problem is if State Governors can or will pay the reviewed minimum wage. Some states are still paying 18k against the approved 30k by the FG.

The Salary review committee should just allow each states to review and set their own minimum wage. A state like Ebonyi should not be paying the same minimum wage as Lagos or PH.

If that’s the case, then that’s fine. They should be realistic about the family income bracket that makes a student qualify for the loan.

There should be a law necessitating impeachment for governors not paying salaries... We've got to tell ourselves the truth, we have the laziest, dumbest and most greedy set of governors in the world...

A Governor will rule a state for full eight years and IGR can't increase by 1percent..Na just to dey go Abuja go collect FAAC come back.. Nothing else majority of them sabi..Lagos was never Dangote's first choice for that refinery but all the other state government were sleeping on bicycle..

Minimum wage must be equal across board, increase your state income or fvck off..No more excuses..

It's the set-up for increasing school fees. It's designed for low uptake. Especially in a country that cannot track its residents

Student loan is one of the worst performing loan types in Western countries, even when they can track their residents, so FG have written it in a way that fixes their liability to a manageable amount

The honest truth is tertiary education is not for everyone. Let the decision on going to university be a business decision. You will pay that money to study a STEM course, law, medicine etc but those Masscom guys need to find their square root into the jobs market than wasting time on a non value adding course.

This is the same requirements most employees are asked to provide before getting employed na. U see people getting paid 70-80k by those outsource companies as bank tellers, they provide this same level of guarantors.

So it’s not a high bar if u ask me; because whether u like it or not u will still provide those guarantors when u are done with school .
