How To Politely Ask For Confirmation Mail From Boss. by Herdamorlar: 12:47pm On Jun 21, 2023
My immediate boss changed his attitude towards me after I told him to send a confirmation mail on what he asked me to do that is against the company policy (though I later did it without the mail after he shouted on me?).
All my colleagues in the office advised me to apologise and move on but I don't see anything I did wrong that warrant me to apologise. I know this will affect me during my appraisal coming up next month.
Please what do you think I should do and is there any polite way to tell your boss for confirmation mail? Because I know he will still ask me to do the same thing again tomorrow

Yes your colleagues are right. Apologize and move on. This would help clear whatever tension is brewing between you two.

However when next you want to request for a confirmation mail from him, ensure you adapt the email to your specific situation and maintain a respectful and professional tone throughout. If you follow this approach, he wouldn't have any reason to turn you down.

You did the right thing! I must commend your professionalism.

I believe it’s a one man business. That’s where shits like that happen.

Your boss is just an opportunist who is not familiar with basic administration ethics. Even if it was inline with company policy, it’s demanded of him to make formal.

OP obey ur Boss
Respect ur parents
Wives respect ur husband's
Husband's respect ur wives
Have love for all and treat all as urselves
Above all, FEAR the Almighty God because He is a SOVEREIGN God who can do and undo. No one questions Him.

Anyone who tells u otherwise deceives u and does not means we'll for u. The fear of the LORD and respect for ur BOSS is the beginning of WISDOM.

Shalom!!!

You did the right thing. If it had backfired, that boss you didn't want to offend would have thrown you under the bus.

Put it in form of a question in text or mail:

"I've noticed that in the employee manual this is against company policy. Do you want me to proceed with your instruction to --- despite this?"

If it's not framed like this it may come off as rude.

Must be difficult working with overbearing bosses.

Unfortunately some bosses will interprete a request for confirmation email as a challenge to their authority or a form of insubordination.

Next time, disguise the purpose of your request, by sending an email in the following form:

Sir, I just want to be sure that I am not missing any detail from your instruction - I should advise the client that we will accept payment in cash.

Is this correct sir?

Your boss will probably still be irritated that you did not get his instruction clearly in the first instance, but he will likely provide a proper response.

I think you did the right thing, though your approach matters alot.

I would have asked "Sir ,I received a mail on this.... just want to be sure/confirm you gave the directive thanks..."

Maybe you should state the way you demand the confirmations.

Next time just send him a mail along this line
"Dear Sir, Sequel to your verbal directives on so so matter, i will be sending a mail to the conerned party to process the order" or something like that.
That way you have an undeniable evidence that you acted basis his instructions

You don't need to apologize if you do you have reduced your level of competency he has for you now.
Luck up, he is happy that you understand the policy and that you are not just any how person that can be influence to work against policy. That will make him has confidence in you.
Don't remind him again for now till he will ask you to do it again that is when you will draw his attention to it. At times they are doing it deliberately to know you level of competency.

According to the Nairaland Classification model i built, this news is correctly placed in the CAREER category.
This predictive model is based on the training data i used which is hundreds of thousand of nairaland frontpage articles collected over the years. The model have so far achieved an accuracy of 90.1%

I plan will create a thread describing in detail the method i used to build this A.I model, plus other tutorial threads. Give me a follow and stay tuned. My name is Timothy, send a mail to me to connect with me on WhatsApp (Personal email address on my signature).

Apology or no apology, it will not change his perception of you.
Apologize for peace to reign.
Those bosses are to arrogant and pompous.

Next time, your tape recorder would be handy. If you cannot obtain written evidence, you get oral proof

True, but the purpose of the apology isn't because you're wrong, but because you don't want to bruise their fragile ego.

Sir, please forgive my confusion earlier today when you requested that I transfered diesel from the B4 Plant to the gallons handed to me by the guard. I was initially not clear about the instruction but I perfectly do understand now.

My apologies once again sir.

I advise you apologize not because you are wrong but because this is Nigeria where respect is valued that right. Next time, don't ask for the confirmation email, go ahead and do the assignment and send an email from your end tando him and state in the email that you have done what he asked you to the instructions he gave you verbally. Don't bother copy another superior boss. Just send him the e-mail to reflect he instructed you to do the assignment.
