larride:I think what he means is if your tertiary education was subsidized, it should be at the same level as that of Redeemers at a lower cost. Personally, I feel Federal Varsities offer value for the fees paid. Atleast Uniuyo. |

DontBullshitMe: It is like you were just looking for a way to insult Awolowo. 1) What does Awolowo have to do with a FEDERAL university like UI in the first republic? 2) Tertiary education was not free in the 1st republic. 3) Free secondary education was introduced in the mid 70s at the peak of the oil boom. Free (or subsidized) tertiary university was introduced in the early 80s. What Awolowo introduced in the 1st republic as the Premier of Western Nigeria was free primary education. How you thought a regional premier was determining the funding of a federal university is miraculous. 14 Likes 4 Shares |

Segedinho: For the subsidy removal, based on past events in Nigeria, there is no time that would be the best to remove it. It's a now or never thing as we're drowning in it. Although, the govt should have put things in place first before removal, I don't think it can be guaranteed that BAT could do much before it's removal since Buhari and co never budgeted for it past June. It's not too late though for the govt to role out palliatives to cushion the effect. Left to me, I'd suggest about #2tn from our subsidy payment should be used to purchase public mass transit buses in the mold of the CNG/LPG experts are suggesting since they run on far cheaper fuel. But based on my knowledge of things, these initiatives aren't something you pull off in months for the CNG/LPG stuff cos our support infrastructure is grossly inadequate. Even that for the proposed EVs. The Charging infrastructure etc is absent. We don't know much about $800mn loan. WB hasn't said anything about it, we don't know if they disbursed it to PMBs govt or not. Even that money sef, the way it would be spent by Buhari and co was largely vague and inept. As for naira float, it's either that or we kill the small manufacturing sector we're struggling to grow. VAT on diesel and the incoming electricity tariff is where I'll fault his govt move. Cos that adds to more strain for consumers and the populace. Costs is going to be transferred from the producers to consumers. Trailers moving goods and services across the country use diesel for fuel and will pass this down. Same as manufacturers who use both diesel and increased tariff for production who will eventually pass it down. These two are where I have issues with the new govt. If at all they shouldn't be lumped or implemented at the same time cos as you said this all adds to inflation and more austerity for the common man. The electricity tariff is a review, so let's hope it stays at that till next year. Too much taxation is one major reason I didn't like the idea of a Tinubu presidency but it's still early days. Na to observe how they navigate this. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

abduleez1:Subsidy was removed in May as against the agreed June... 1 month interval to some extent is enough to roll out incentives cos reality have no respect for anybody.. As an FG a (reasonable one)your most important role is to fight for the poor and vulnerable not to input more pains irrespective of the long gain ahead. Subsidy removal can be done in phase,if you aren't sure of the direct measures to take. There are some policy that are too grave and as a result shouldn't be carried out in a haste.. To compound d sufferings...more anti-human policy are being rolled out and we are preaching patience when a derica of garri is scaring the masses. In a country like Nigeria, trust is the thing an FG desired most atleast history of mismanagement and corruption still lingers till now |

larride:Baba..this is what I think livelong is talking about and in all honesty it make sense. If an aba made gucci is wort 2k,you can't call it subsidised in respect to the original gucci...your money is worth what you got. If as a guy man,u made modifications by ironing it garnished with good perfumes and then you are respected for it......then it is you hardwork that gave u d respect. My point is,If you come out successful as a graduate in a Nigeria(sub standard) uni and actually get d job outside..it is more of your hardwork than the facilities u passed thru.... So in brevity, the argument of no subsidy could be right,it just depends on how you look at it.... 2 Likes 1 Share |

Segedinho:The Aba made gucci is it close in quality of output to Real Milan made Gucci? A private Uni without subsidy pays like 10times more than Govt uni. If total amount to grad in a Public Uni is 500K, a Private uni grad might be spending 5m for same course The product after graduation which is the candidate, do you think Private Uni grads are 10 times better than public uni grad? 2 Likes |

Segedinho: Ma own na make we dey look... I no get much to say. We might have some succour with the Dangote refinery starting commercial operations in September but I doubt if prices will drop down as many expect cos man is out for profits. One thing I can suggest the govt does is to support and promote the use of the rails massively as a form of transport of goods from the North to the south. More investments on rolling stocks, storage containers for all types of goods (perishables and the likes) They can at least control food prices significantly with that and reduce supply time. Also security in the north needs to be tackled urgently and treated as a state of emergency. Farmers needs to get back to the farms, this I believe is part of the rising food prices. Hopefully, since almost all the service chiefs have credible experience and have partaken in anti terrorist and banditry operations in the North at some point, there might be hope. For now Na observation mode I dey... |

raumdeuter: This is the point most of them arguing there’s no subsidy on tertiary education are missing . I graduated from a public university and work in the same organization with graduates of private university . The knowledge I acquired from a public university at next to nothing cost qualifies me to do the same thing a person who acquired same knowledge from an expensive private school . Anybody still arguing further just wan dey help seun increase the number of earnings he makes per click on nairaland . |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by Segedinho(m): 3:12pm On Jun 21, 2023 |
raumdeuter:Quality is the difference here. In all my 5 years in uni I never saw a bit nor did any practical with it let alone rig....I think it was actually where my payment expired......(not subsidised). I was taught fortran in a blackboard and that made it less interesting and actually, it was what my meagre fees could afford ..(not subsidised). I think educations is more interesting if only you can see d practical part of it wch i think would v been achieved if my fees was worth it... My definition of subsidy is paying less for quality and in quantity.. About who is better.....I think it is the mindset of the victim (hardwork) Tinubu as a case study,we were told he was too smart that he was needed in mobil yet he read at home and helped himself for more info.. I have a first class graduate as a friend that hasn't really climbed whereas a 3rd class friend of mine is chilling in London. Better is actually d hardwork you put in place and it more easier in a suitable environment. 1 Like |

raumdeuter:On paper, private uni grads have the opportunity to be 10x better than their 'subsidised' counterparts. Due to hard work on the part of the Federal Uni grad or laziness of the private uni grad or both, this gap may be reduced significantly or be non-existential sef. |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by raumdeuter: 3:24pm On Jun 21, 2023 |
akwesenana: Do you think those in private Uni too dont study hard or dont put in hardwork? Do you think you just enter there and the lecturers stuff your head with superior materials? Note that most of the lecturers teaching in Private Unis are also teaching in Public unis unless you are saying Lecturer John will dumb down 10 times when he is in Public uni If Private Uni no put hardwork, e go cast. Same as with public Uni |

akwesenana: Every Uni grad will have to put in work to excel in life, There are many jobless Covenant grads all over. There is a girl whose parent sent to Private Uni and no job so far despite making "2-1". (You know some Private Uni give 75% of their grads 2-1). There is no MLM she hasnt put hand into. If not foreverliving, its Longrich or whichever latest one I went to serve with Private Uni people from Babcock, they were not better than me. I worked in Organizations that had private Uni grads and there was no difference beyond that they were younger due to No ASUU strike |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 3:28pm On Jun 21, 2023 |
akwesenana: No! The private university graduate and myself wouldn’t get into the organization if we didn’t pass aptitude tests , pass all stages of interview and pass our medicals. What I’m saying is the knowledge I acquired was the same the person acquired in private university . Most of the lecturers in private university were poached from public universities . There’s nothing special about the knowledge they impart in private universities . So far ur head carry book, whether na private or public university u go ; the knowledge u acquired in either of the institutions can get u placement in any decent organization . How do u think Nigerians who attended OOU, UNIBEN, Ekpoma , ABU, BUK, UNILAG , UI , etc relocate abroad and get jobs with their Nigerian degree in places like Canada if the subsidized education in public universities is substandard ? |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by livelongprospa: 3:29pm On Jun 21, 2023 |
Please no offence to government graduates but private university students are mostly better finished products on average. That you have outliers doesn't change that reality. Thing is recruitment companies also take that into account when shortlisting but when it comes to base knowledge in most cases the private uni student will be ahead just from what they learnt in uni. |

VP KASHIM SHETTIMA RECEIVES BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery has lauded the courage of President Bola Tinubu for removing fuel subsidy, describing the move and other economic policies of the administration as the right step forward. He stated this after meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the State House, Abuja. The British High Commissioner informed State House correspondents that the meeting with the vice president was fruitful, as it focussed on how to ramp up bilateral relations between the two countries, particularly in the area of boosting economic engagements. Under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, Nigeria he notes, has taken big economic decisions that have not only been noticed around the world, but holds a lot of potential for foreign investments. 1 Like |

BlueRayDick: Take even Law school bar exams, Are the top tier private Universities performing better than top tier Public Universities. E.g UNILAG, UNN, UI, OAU ABU vs Covenant, Babcock, Redeemers Madonna Igbinedion Are they performing better? And are they performing better at the ratio of the school fees? E.g If fees paid is 10:1, Will there be a ratio 10:1 of successful candidates private to public Uni? 1 Like |
