HOUSE MANAGEMENT
To maintain a good house it has to be constructed in such a way that it will minimize stress when you are about to clean the rooms. First prioritize enough ventilation when constructing. Most people use woods when constructing the houses but I use blocks in my own due to the intensity of rainfall and flooding in my farm. Termites are friends to woods so use treated woods if you will be using them and know at that repair will be more often that way. When planning try to provide a house that will last at least a decade which means you have to go for quality at all cost. Your housing defects can destroy your investment.

The house can be raised so the animals urine and dung falls to the ground where it will be packed daily. If you can’t make a raised house then you should think of making it a little bit sloppy so as the urine and dungs to move out.
Re: Diary Of A Sheep Farmer by Jub101(m): 6:16am On Apr 09, 2023
Wooden or plastic crates can be used on the floor to prevent direct contact with their urine and dungs. Note that their urine contains high level of ammonia which is toxic if inhaled. So your ventilation has to be top notch. Also put in mind that during cold weather you should be able to make the room enclosed too. To prevent cold from killing your sheeps

If you’re able to provide good housing your animals will be comfortable and productive. Try eat and sleeping in a dirty room and see if you won’t get sick.

If your housing is done correctly you will spend less on drugs and increase your profit margin.

I buy my salt lick. To learn how to make yours just go on YouTube tons of videos are on it concerning that. A 5kg block of salt lick (imported) cost 7500 in my area

Which brand of salt lick is that? Which state are you?

Picture of a pallet is attached below. It comes in either wooden or plastic form. It makes the sanitation system easier for both the animals and the farmer. A good carpenter can construct the wooden ones just tell him to use good wood because of constant exposure to urine for it to last long.

Congrats bro, I guess she gives birth to just a kid. Could being a first time mother be a factor for a low birth?

Thanks bro, it is a factor. But if you wait for the ewe to be older like a year and half then you should maybe except twins as first born. Also the genetics of the bloodline of the ewe and ram sometimes decide birth of twins. There are some breeds that will only give birth to twins or more.

As the rain is getting constant now please ensure you deworm your animals at least once every 2 months for animals under a year old they are most susceptible at this early stage of their lives

Deworming drugs that I have used and recommend are : Albendazole (drench)
Levamisole (inj)
Ivermectin(oral and inj)
Try and use interchange between this group of dewormers.
I use two of them together e.g Albendazole(oral) and ivermectin injection so as to make the deworming more effective and reduce resistant against these worms.

THINGS TO CONSIDER FOR RAINING SEASON
1. Get ready for serious deworming regime. Deworm all your lambs if they are on open grazing every month. Adult sheep of a year and above can be dewormed once in two months.
2. Get your effective antibiotics ready at the onset on the rain. I use tenaline injection (oxytetrecycline LA 20%) expensive but very effective. Give them preferably once in a month with good multivitamin injection.
3. Add iodine to their drinking water to boost immunity against viral infections.
4. If you’re located in a wet area like me invest in wooden pallet so they won’t sleep on bear cold floor.
4. Invest in ectoparasite spray like diazinol, tetranor and spray them once every two weeks if they are on open grazing.
5. Maintain good hygiene
6. Feed them good food and adequately and ensure clean water is given
7. Be vigilant and pay attention to all your animals.
If you have any questions please do ask. Thanks

Great job. Please, don't you experience Fulani issues on your grazing field?
And can you recommend housing dimensions for a newbie?

please from how many weeks do you start the deworming process of newly born sheep.

todto:

It depends on your scenerio.
First I will talk about intensive system. Under this, deworming isn’t done as much due to the fact that free grazing is not allowed which is mainly the way parasite enters the sheep digestive system through grazing. With intensive system 2 month for lamb is okay and also deworm again when it’s about to be weaned.
The second scenario is under free grazing or semi intensive system which is what I practice 1 month after lambing is good and every 3month after that or as the situation presents itself.
NOTE: alternate between the different class of dewormer and don’t underdone them to prevent resistance

I don’t encounter Fulani because my animals graze in my palm plantation and my farm only. I use them to control the weeds instead of chemicals
Sure I can. Let me know the amount of space you have and the numbers of animals you’re intending to have.

I can’t tell if my sheep is on heat that’s the work of a ram. Those into artificial insemination will know better.
What I do in my own case is know the exact date which she gives date through proper record keeping and introduce a ram a month and half after that.

She lost one of the kids. She wasn’t nursing and caring for him at all. She didn’t accept him.
From my record she is a good mother who produces big offspring. This is her first time of giving birth to twins so I guess she taught it wasn’t hers. sad

Cassava peel is good for them. Try and get it dried very well. Some cassavas contain cyanide which is harmful in high quantity to them. Aside that it’s a good source of energy.
