What most applicants are not aware of, is that your fate is decided even before the interview. The consular officers are usually given quotas. Those quotas are used to determine who gets the visa and who's declined. Secondly, when booking for the appointment, make sure you use genuine supporting documents eg bank statement, transcript etc. If you're using an agent to do the booking ensure that he/she gives you a copy of the completed forms so that you'd be conversant with it. Those applying for B1/B2 visa class ( travel/tourism) stand at an advantage if you have a good travel history. I.e. you've travelled to many western countries or you have a very fat bank balance or proof of funds. If you don't have sufficient travel history ensure that the person sending you the invitation has a good job or is of reputable social standing, good credit, or not a felon. The sure route ( in my opinion) to getting Visa if you're a young person is the F1/F2 student or dependent visa category. It has a high success rate. When applying to schools, pick government owned institutions or Ivy league schools ( Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford etc) Or schools like Louisiana state university, Michigan state or reputable HBCUs ( historically black college and universities) also ensure that you've paid some of the fees . This goes a long way to convince the consular officer that you genuinely intend to come over for schooling. Lastly, most consular officers are trained to look out for inconsistencies. That's why its important to memorize the answers to the questions asked in the form. Once they observe something not in tandem with what you've filled, instantly a red flag goes up. You can be declined based on that, irrespective of whether you have enough supporting evidence/documents or not. That's why its imperative that you're truthful at all times. Applicants are deemed to be a flight risk if they don't have strong country - tie. Eg you're not married, or have a good job/ business or something that will ensure you'll come back to Nigeria if you're given a visa. So in most cases if you don't have a strong country - Tie, there's a high probability you'd be declined. In summary, it's not what you say or don't say that determines whether you're given the visa. The consular officer already knows if he or she is going to give you de visa even before you appear. The interview is mere formality.

If you don’t have a job in academia or federal ministry, traveling to the US for postgraduate studies with your own funds is like passing through the eye of needle. Very rarely they issue visa because you have no home ties. But with packaging, one can land the visa without issues.

@op, my mantra is that whatever is your own is your own. God's time is always the best.

I did an visa interview with the USA embassy in Abuja in April. I was applying for the H1-B visa. I was only asked two questions.

1. What's your highest degree?
2. How much will you be earning?

Less than 5 minutes interview and I received the visa. However, the person before me and after me were students (F visas) and both were denied.

The fact is, I have always wanted to go to the USA. I wrote the SAT for undergrad, wrote the GRE and TOEFL. I paid application fees. All to no avail.

Fast-forward after I got my PhD, an organization sponsors my work permit to the USA. It felt like a mirage but it was God's timing.

Please don't let the refusal bother you. Dust yourself up and apply again. Don't give up!

I am going to let you on a secret. The number one reason most Nigerians get Visa refusals are not looking directly into the examiner's eyes when one is being asked a question. The first indicative sign that someone is telling a lie is trying to avoid making eye contact when answering a question "Goddammit look in my eyes and repeat whatever crap you just said" That is American's favorite expression.

I guess you were denied because you were elaborating unnecessarily which can potentially be suspect as lying.
Not saying you are lying, but simple answers would have been enough, without suggesting a leading next question from your replies or trying hard to be convincing (you can unknowingly sound desperate).

80% of the decision to approve or deny you the visa is computed from the data u have provided in your application. The remaining 20% is to defend that data and just match the persona to the profile.

Since I can't tell what is on your DS application form, I can guess your representation didn't pair with your application content very much.

the second thing that worked against you in my own opinion and even if i were the vo i won't give you is the fact that you talked too much, you trying to impress the vo with ur father's accomplishments and what you intend to do. it shows you were just trying to please. be natural with any lie you are given, if truly your father is who you say he is , you won't need to go into too much detail about him, you even mention how much he makes in a year (red flag), always keep your answers short and precise, no long talking

50 million annually is peanuts, that's less than 5 million monthly.... such funds are not sufficient enough to sponsor a US education

panpan:
What is disheartening are the non-refundable fees that the applicants pay for a visa refusal.

It is obvious that the United States embassy and consulates are being maintained by visa application fees. As long as the money keeps flowing in, they will continue this mode of operation. Who would reject a "business" of making over N50m each working day?

What can we do?

If a foreign entity snubs you, you may snub them back. Only apply for a US visa if it is very important to you and there is no other option. Boycott the US visa application if possible.

Consider the US visa application as a gamble; only pay the application fees with money that you can afford to lose (in other words, money that you do not need for anything else).

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), agents and lawyers, who are involved in immigration issues may start a campaign against US visa applications. Let the general public be sensitized against wasting hard-earned money on a foreign entity, especially when there is no positive result.

For the benefit of others
All consular office has a camera pointing Infront of you while you seated there talking. It's like applying for loan with a fintech app and they're analysing your score. At the end it's approved or rejected.

Some people go with less money in their account and visa was given, some had nothing at all. Some even with British passport, Visas got denied. Let me break down from experience.

1. The camera: Once you're seated in front make sure you speak smartly. The camera is busy analysing your face if you're a terrorist, wanted scammer or had any criminal records etc. Remember USA, UK, Canada and all those countries are very strict with giving men visas compared to women. The FBI and immigration upload records to their database and everything can be checked in matter of minutes.

2. Time: There are other people waiting, sometimes they'll not tell you your time is over. Be specific in your answers and make it short. E.g are you married? No. Have you ever been to US? No. Who's sponsoring? Parents. DONT SAY DAD. Don't over stressed. They know, they've open your passport and they've seen no previous visa but they have to asked and see your response. It's logic.

3. Be sensible: Like in your case, you're going as a student, and you were ask, Do you have a relative in US? Your response should've been No. They believe if you answer Yes, then you should provide your relationship with her. They don't want that connection except she was the one who sent you invitation. There are many involved in drugs, terrorist, and gangs... So they wouldn't risk joining you with her unless it's verified. Since you're going as a student, best answer could've been, No. I'm covered by the school. This means accommodation, fees and everything is under the school as you stated in your application. Not to bring in your friend or relatives here.
In my case, I make sure what I submitted in application tally with what I said including the contact persons. If you mention your friend, then that friend must be a student from the same school because before your interview they've place a call or verify his address already waiting to hear your feedback. I won't explain more due to time but student or work visa has limitations and you must be smart.

4. Avoid pride: They don't care if your dad is the senator. Sometimes even when you're traveling with him, they'll interview all of you. It's you not your dad. In this case be specific because you've already submitted application and they've seen and verify what you've submitted. Here you would've answer the question who's sponsoring you as "father" or if both parents you say "parents". Not dad! Next you're ask what does he do. You replied "He's a business man". Here they might want to test you by asking again what business? This is when you say " importer/exporter". That's all. They may go deeper to ask what exactly, then you can now specify if cars, spare parts etc. Not you stating how much he's making and all of that. Where you ask? They know for someone to do importation or export goods he has foreign currencies. Remember they've information about him already from application you submitted earlier.

5. Finally, your contact person in US is very important. Every consular wants to know where you'll stay when you move in there. They don't want people to go add up with existing refugees.
In your case you say school, the university has provided accommodation and you provide correct details with contact persons. In my case I gave the school phone, and my colleague phone. This colleague of mine we had communicated on WhatsApp school group. So if they call him he can say he's a student in the same school and they're all expecting to see you join them that classes had begun. This doesn't matter whether he's or not a student, but the claim should make sense.

Also, your last respond about coming back to Nigeria. That's another error. They know that there's no employment in the country and many are traveling out to seek jobs outside. They believe you're lying. Every consular must ask this question because you're not expecting to over stay in that country once your program as a student has ended. Here your response would been: I'll return home after my program to contribute to my country experience in the field I pursued. But if by excellence I'm given opportunity to work in US, I'll get appropriate papers with immigration and work. They want to hear that immigration and your sincerity. You're coming from a poverty corrupt country and they know once you get in its unlikely for you to return home. So be specific and sincere in your answers. I hope this helps.
